   Our landlord is cutting down several beautiful trees next to the entrance of our beach cabin if we can't find new homes for them. This is the month to transplant. You would need to cover any transportation and planting costs, I can provide myself, roommate and neighbors' help with labor.

   Philip, I hate to tell you this, but a 20 ft. tree can't just be dug up and moved that easily. The root ball of a tree that size will weigh upwards of 600 lbs., and maybe even twice that amount. I doubt you could dig it out by hand at all, but even if you did you'd need a truck with a boom to move it. Don't get me wrong, I save trees and discourage cutting every chance I get. I'm a member of Plant Amnesty. But sadly (as someone experienced in the tree business) I think you're in over your head. Is there no way to discourage the landlord from cutting these trees?

   Large trees CAN be moved professionally, but it's very expensive. I looked into having a 12 foot incense cedar moved laterally about 10 feet, and the estimate was upwards of $500. Unless you've got a lot of money to burn, and the tree is an exceptional or rare specimen, the cost is usually difficult to justify. However, if you've got the cash, I say go for it!

   Big Tree Supply will rescue eligible trees for free, but eligibility is up to their discretion. They take ownership of the trees after removal and recoup their costs by selling the trees to those looking to add mature trees to their landscape.
