I sent this along to the editor for the pets page, but just in case there is a concerned pet owner out there eagerly scanning the boards I thought I'd post it as well.

While I was out working on leash training our new puppy this afternoon in our driveway near the corner of California Ave SW and Andover, two cats heard me talking to my dog and starting mewing like mad. They were outside in the courtyard of the apartment on the corner of California and Andover and hopped the fence, running right up to us and following us wherever we went, talking all the while. They looked very well cared for and were obviously extremely confident and friendly, so I have to assume they were someone's pets that had gotten out. I don't think they were too happy about being outside though as they tried to follow us into the house and were quite insistent about it! I had assumed that they were someone's cats from the apartment building on the corner, but its several hours later now and my neighbor just called to ask if I knew anything about them as they were mewing and asking to be let into his house as well.

The first of the two cats was a black shorthaired kitty with a little bit of white on him. The other was mostly white with I think some brown or tabby markings. She may have been part Siamese because she was the very talkative one.

  2. Queenie-
Thank you for alerting area residents about the possibility that these were escaped cats. My guess would be that they are indoor/outdoor. Unfortunately some people let their cats out even with obvious hazards such as the traffic on California Ave. I walked around and called for the cats but did not see them. Hopefully they are back inside safe and warm.

Could these be some of Teri's foster cats that got out during the fire yesterday? It's just 2 blocks away.

So, an update: Another pair of wonderful and very concerned neighbors from, I think, the condo complex on the other side of me just knocked on my door to ask if I had lost a pair of cats. The same kitties I had posted about from earlier today were following them as they went door to door looking for their owner, cold and very eager to find some sort of house to stay in. They tried to wiggle past me once more, in fact, really wanting to go in a house, any house. Poor babies.

I told the very kind woman that I would probably buckle and take them in if I did not already have a cat that I don’t want to risk exposing to the possibility of Feline Leukemia from two unfamiliar cats, however cute and affectionate they might be. She is apparently in the same situation and has two cats of her own at home herself. We both talked about what to do about them as the cats clearly are not outside cats and that its quite cold and there are quite a lot of raccoons in the area. I told her about posting here and the possibility that they’d been lost in the fire, and also tried the number listed on the Furry Faces website but nobody answered. If this was the land line of the house that burned down then I suppose that’s not very surprising. I honestly don’t know what to do here, as the thought of calling the Humane Society or something is very daunting, especially since they so obviously belong to someone. Just ignoring them also seems wrong, though. If anyone has any other suggestions or people I might call, I would be very appreciative.

Just talked to Teri and she confirmed that the two cats in question are not hers. She wants to thank you all for thinking of her.

  8. Queenie, hopefully you called Mehud.

Also, FELV is pretty uncommon now, while it does exist, I can count on 1 hand how many times it has come up in my 13 years of cat rescue.
