I ended up with a used HTC T-mobile G1. I liked it because in addition to the signal/connection options I was looking for, it has both a large touch screen and a qwerty keyboard, which were important to me but may not be to you. My only issue with it is its weight. It is pretty heavy. Otherwise I love it. There are newer, flashier options, but I didn't want to pay for them.

Jim,
I just got one of my own. I found it on e-bay. There were several available although I had to look for 2-3 weeks to find exactly what I wanted at a decent price.

Hi Jim I don't have a used smart phone for sale but I ran across this deal from dell. http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1907048
I actually bought one of these phones a while back on a similar discount and it works fine with t-mobile I just put my t-mobile prepaid sim card in the phone and it transferred my number and contacts and everything. It does have wifi but I'm not real happy with the browser it can be frustrating to effectively use because the screen is so small and a lot of sites are hard to really browse with such a small screen. For me the wifi is generally not worth the effort but it has been useful in a pinch a few times.
