I liked Dufus' post too. We use Feline Pine clumping, but I have tried different types. Our cats like dirt too. As long as it is clean our cats don't really care. I might try Hammerhead's suggestion. That seems less messy.

On the transition: I've had good luck with the very gradual introduction of the new litter, plus a sprinkling of "Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract" litter. Generally the more set in their ways your cats are, the more gradually you want to introduce new ways to them. Sprinkle just a handful of the new litter with the old at first, plus a handful of the Cat Attract. When you next scoop, add another handful of the new, plus another sprinkling of Cat Attract. And so on. It takes a while, but you really, really want your cats to be happy with their litter!

Swheat Scoop Natural Wheat Litter is the BEST (imho) it is not only naturally clumping (the wheat starches) it is also flushable - the enzymes naturally biodegrade and eliminate odor. It is safe and non-toxic. Mud Bay has the best pricing on it (Mud Bay is the best for anything you want to know and try!) Pet Elements is good too (they've been trying to stay current to meet Mud Bay's pricing). It is the only stuff my cats will use, and I've been using it in a multi-cat home for eons.

We use the "Litter Purrfect" from Costco and after trying everything, and I mean everything it works the best for us. Cats wouldn't Swheat scoop or world's best, and we have been happy with this stuff with our three cats. It's also fairly cheap at $8.00 for 30lbs. It's says it's all natural which I am sure is relative, but hey, it works for us and the kitties.

My key to a successful transition? Slow and easy.
Combine a little of the new stuff with alot of the old stuff and as you need to change the litter just keep adding a little more of the new and less of the old.

For those who use the "good" stuff, how have you or did you transition your cats from the old stuff to the new stuff? We have two cats in our house (not mine) and I've wanted to switch to a better litter, yet I'm told that there will be kitty pee pee payback (and possibly on my favourite pillow) if I try to switch their litter.

Natural cat litter can be made by digging a hole in your yard and putting the dirt in your house, in a litter box, for the cat. Saves on wasteful packaging, saves fuel in transporting cat litter from factory to distributor to stores to your house, gives you good exercise digging, you might find some good fishing worms, your cat likes dirt for doing his/her duty. It is free. You can plant a tree in the hole.

I just did a trial run of World's Best Cat litter, and while I loved it (no dust!) none of my cats would even enter the clean box with the new litter. Instead they doubled-up on our other litter box with the old kind. I'm not willing to risk four angry cats (and the potential potty payback) by switching both boxes, so my loss could be your gain. Is anyone out there wanting my 1)8# of unused kitty litter bagged up and 2) a brand-new 8# unopened bag of the same litter? I would have just returned the unopened bag, but one of my felines added insult to injury by using his teeth to puncture the top of the plastic bag multiple times in protest. I just don't want to throw it away. 206-818-6483, please leave message if I don't pick up.

Here is what I do. Right now I have about 25 cats including my own. I line my litter boxes with newspaper and use crown littler. It is recycled newspaper pellets(also comes as good mews). Now the difference between and those of your who only have 1-3 cats maybe LOL. I dump my litter every morning and pick poop out in the afternoons. I HATE clumping litter personally. When people come into our house the first thing people say is how many cats do you have? They are always amazed that my house doesn't STINK! Wood pellets are fine too.

So coming from a person with alot of cats:) MEOW

Costco carries a natural cat litter, at least they did several months ago. Of course, there's also the question of what is really meant when the package says "natural"--not sure how much difference there is between a mass-produced "natural" product and the regular stuff.

I also spotted a pet supply store in the Junction today. I think it was called Next to Nature. Did not go inside, so I can't vouch for them personally, but it might be what you're looking for.
