LOVE Canters! I had the BEST night there about 10 years ago. Went to Ghenghis Cohen to see Phil Cody play (check him out!) - along with the Wallflowers keyboardist. Afterwards we all headed down to Canters for an all night jam session, hung out on Fairfax drinking and bull**itting. Jakob Dylan even called on someone's cell phone, and we all begged him to come down, but he didn't. So cool to think that's where Guns 'N Roses started out too! Ah, such a good night!

..oh, and good food too. I totally ordered the matzo ball soup! :)

While I suppost the concept of a all night deli or hang out. Keep in mind that we would need additional police officers to patrol those places who is willing to pay for them? we have plenty of fantastic hauntings in WS we just need them to extend their hours. A Jewish Deli or Italian deli would be amazing!!!

Wow that shows how much of a space cadet I am, I bus past the old minnies several times a week and never noticed that there was something new there.

There's also a 13 coins off boren if you don't want to go to seatac. Very weird vibe at 2-4 am, kind of a mafioso funeral parlor feel. Decent food, though I wish they could serve booze 24 hours as well.

Well, it's been completley remodeled and is now called "Whym Diner" - and is still open 24 hours. I had the best coffee and brunch there a few weeks ago.

It's not West Seattle but it is just a hop, skip & jump on/off 99...

I'd also love a prix fixe tapas & burlesque place open for lunch and dinner, more casual, intimate and affordable than Teatro Zinzanni.

I'm fascinated that there are people eating food at 2:00 - 3:00 - 4:00 a.m. while I have only visions of sugar plums dancing in my sleepy head. More power to you!

It's sad (and a bit pathetic) that one has to actually leave the city in order to find a 24 hour food joint. The north side has Beth's, but we're SOL down here. Randy's down on East Marginal is genius, but wish it was a bit closer.

If I must go get something to eat in the middle of the night, we'll head to the IHOP in Seatac, open 24/7.

i don't think you have to be jewish to long for a good jewish delicatessen... say new york or chicago style.. with booths and an all night menu that includes lots of melted cheese and a selection of soups. I probably wouldn't drop by in the middle of the night.. although on nights when i wake int he middle of the night it would be good to have a more social option... but i would drop in at odd hours for great soup...

my husband is only a 2nd generation american on both sides as am i on my father's side... although portions of mom's family has been in America more than 4 generations.. and include an indentured servant of unknown ethnic origin. In addition, I suspect that we both have greatgrandparents who were actually illegal aliens :0

neither of us are jewish.. but both of us have heard the same ethnic based stories that piece tells.. his italian.. mine bohemian... both families catholic converted to protestant to assimilate:)

I am not saying that the jewish story is not unique when it comes to the amount of discrimination that was and still is based primarily on their religion..

Just that the jews are not the only cultural identity that has moved in and out of rapid assimilation... the cultural melting pot that is America has moved out of assimilation and into a reverence for the traditions and food of many cultures pretty rapidly.

and that seattle hipster thing he mentions.. (and the Seattle freeze) has it's roots more in the desire of the norwegian community to keep it's identity (norwegian reticence) than those hip young things trying to be cool will admit until well after their 50th brithday.

Good food seems to have been the path back towards cultural identity in our society. I am old enough to remember when pizza and spagetti were considered exotic foods.. and real chinese food was only prepared in the back rooms of chinese establishments for those with cultural access. Real appreciation for a jewish deli can't be far behind:) I suspect there is plenty of room in West Seattle for the appreciation of a good jewish deli.. especially one that stayed open late.

Easy street could acquire the property next door and open onto a bookstore... and stay open really late.... or.. luna park could do the same.

A Cafe Presse type place over here would be awesome! My one problem with most new places in WS is they're too expensive for frequent visits. A place like Spring Hill is amazing and I'm glad it exists, but it's a 2 or 3 times a year splurge kind of place. I'd love something a little less expensive, but still with a hip and lively vibe. Kinda like a bistro version of what Prost is - small, crowed, loud, and fun as hell.

I'd like to see something along the Cafe Presse line... Fairly inexpensive and delicious food, tons of charm, always a little too crowded and loud.

when I first moved to WS at 18, there were a lot of places we could go and hang out all night- Dennys, Mr. Eds, and the Corner Inn (although, from what I have heard lately, it's a miracle no one died from eating there)....if you want late night eats/hang out, you have to drive to Beth's on Aurora, which is frankly not worth the drive. It would be great if we could have an all night diner type place open here.

The restaurant already exists, it just needs to stay open 24 hours or at least till 2am - Easy Street. I guess they're using their diner side for music on weekends, but I'd rather they try the late night diner idea and see how it goes.

How about a daily fresh salad bar in the Junction to help offset all those fat foods like cupcakes,donuts,high calorie coffee drinks. We may see West Seattle become skinnier and that would be a good thing.

Mellow- I used to go to the Library too... what a great place! I was working in DC at the time (80's) and Dupont Circle was one of my favorite areas to go. Great memories, thanks for bringing it up!

Dupont also had an LGBT reputation, but that didn't deter any of us straights... it was a very harmonious community. Just like I think West Seattle is.

Five Points by the needle is pretty good and easy to get to from the viaduct, but Beth's is the only place I know of that's open all night AND is all ages. I don't think there is enough of a demand for this type of establishment in West Seattle. I'm usually out late it seems like a ghost town around here after 2am.

Celeste - there used to be a great place near Dupont Circle in Washington D.C. that was an all night cafe/coffee shop/bookstore. I think it was called "The Library". I used to go there to study and eat late night when I was in law school. They played soft jazz in the background - it was a cool place. I'd love to see something like that around here.

Yes that is what I was saying. The topic on the radio was if Tom and Terry were to invest a half million dollars into your restaurant what type of restaurant do you want and where do you want it. Someone called in and said a Jewish Deli and I thought that sounded good. I was thinking of some place in West Seattle that would serve a good sandwich or a cup of soup late in the night. Even though we have some great restaurants in WS it seems that the restaurants close (or stop serving) by 10pm. And most coffee shops close by 9pm. There have been many times that I have been coming home from somewhere and wish we still had the Admiral Cafe that was open all night. So lets here some ideas and maybe we can send them to Tom and Terry and convince them that West Seattle needs a late night diner.

I think, Scott, that Celeste was just brainstorming..not that it has to be exactly a Jewish Deli, but something akin to that...with a coffee house atmosphere. Something casual, with food like sandwiches (mmm - a good Reuben, or Hot Pastrami, or a nice thick roast beast sammie..mmmm), nothing fancy, but for those who are night owls, or who get off work at midnight or 1am...get the drift? Where you can sit and read a book with your "coffee" or whatever until 2 or 3am if you like. it's a GREAT concept...don't you think?

TR this is exactley what I am asking for in my thread. I have often been out with friends or at the hospital with my Mom and returning late wishing for something where I can sit and read my book have a cup of coffee and or something to eat. I would like the chelan to be open. I miss the dog house.

I wish a place like Charlestown Cafe could be open till 1, 2 am. The Kid and I are night owls and in fact were just asking people via Twitter for late-late-night coffeehouse suggestions around the city, since we already know there are none in WS.

I think a Jewish deli is unlikely to happen in Seattle.

Eli Sanders wrote an interesting article titled "The Jewish Problem" that was published in The Stranger newspaper two years ago. The article is well-written and relatively short, but it may be difficult reading for the masses.

I think the LGBT (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender/Transsexual) movement is currently more outspoken than the "straight" people. I think the LGBT movement gets disproportionate news coverage.

I'd love to see any number of our WS places stay open late. Give last call, drinks have to be off the tables at 2:00, and kitchen stays open another couple of hours.

Also based on recent threads, I could see someone making a good run at a LGBT-leaning-friendly-to-all establishment again.

I think West Seattle needs a good late night place. Some place where you have been out for the night but you aren't ready to go home. How about a Jewish Deli with a late night coffee house. I would like something that has a lot of parking and easy access in and out of West Seattle.
