Robert GMemberCan anyone tell us what is going on over at the Naval Reserve station at Manchester? There is an obnoxiously bright set of lights that recently appeared. It’s a nasty eyesore from down here south of the Fauntleroy Ferry Dock. It must be terrible from Alki… or worse yet, Blake.

WSBKeymasterI’ve been noticing this through our teeny between-tree-branches peek view for at least a week, was hoping it was temporary, but apparently not. A couple others have asked about it this weekend. Looking at MarineTraffic.com, which I should have done much sooner, there’s a cargo ship showing as anchored right in that spot called Orient Becrux, and it doesn’t appear to have been in port since leaving Japan 7/3 – the timeline would match. Trying to find out more. – TR

jissyParticipantMy husband was just asking me about those lights — VERY bright at night.

Robert GMemberLooks like it’s coming from the top of that huge building over there, which may or may not be a new building. I’ve never had reason to look over there till now, so I don’t know.
I’d like to attach a pic, but I don’t know how to do that here.

WSBKeymasterThe ship I mentioned earlier is going through the open Spokane St. Swing Bridge into the Duwamish River as we speak. So if the lights are gone tonight, that was the culprit. Meantime, we’re trying to figure out who at the Navy can answer media questions about the Manchester Fuel Depot, which is the facility in that spot. I suppose next move is to take the ferry to Bainbridge with binoculars and look … TR

Robert GMemberI will look tonight.
But I don’t think Bainbridge would be the best vantage point. Rather, Tillicum Village on blake would be the best (worst) place to be.

Robert GMemberYes, obnoxious as ever.
Well, using TR’s lead, I poked around on marinetraffic.com and discovered that the newly built USNS John Glenn is moored over there. And from what i can see with my binoculars, I’d say that’s what the source of the light pollution is. Couldn’t find any news items on how long it will be there.

metrognomeParticipantInsomnia is a wonderful thing … couldn’t find specifics about USNS John Glenn (MSP-2) except that it does not yet have a home port, per navy.mil.
However, did find some info on it’s predecessor, USNS Montford Point (MSP-1) which is at NS Everett (incorrectly listed as ‘no home port’ on navy.mil.) I’m guessing the Glenn will be assigned a home port soon, so it’s stay at Manchester will be limited (it is crewed by civilians.)

metrognomeParticipantdidn’t want to test the spam filter … here’s a third link on MSP-1:

WSBKeymasterThanks MG – now the question remaining is, ARE those bright lights from that ship, or something else? I swear that last night it was brighter than before. We are still trying to track down the right Navy public-affairs person who might be able to help us get an answer. Or, perhaps a ride on the Bremerton ferry tonight might yield confirmation – I think that would have a view of the Manchester dock – though it wouldn’t answer the question “permanent or temporary” … thanks for the homeporting info. – TR
