JenVMemberThe estimated cost of Laura Bush and Cindy McCain’s outfits for the RNC:
Thanks to Vanity Fair, we know how an idea of how much their outfits probably cost. Check out the estimates:
Laura Bush
Oscar de la Renta suit: $2,500
Stuart Weitzman heels: $325
Pearl stud earrings: $600ā$1,500
Total: Between $3,425 and $4,325
Cindy McCain
Oscar de la Renta dress: $3,000
Chanel J12 White Ceramic Watch: $4,500
Three-carat diamond earrings: $280,000
Four-strand pearl necklace: $11,000ā$25,000

Total: Between $299,100 and $313,100
Thanks, gonna go be sick now. Her outfit cost more than a nice house in West Seattle!

CPMemberCindy McCain is wearing my neighbor’s house.
Any totals for Michelle? She always looks impeccable.
September 4, 2008 at 6:36 pm #637384
nuniMemberAnd you don’t think any of that jewelry was borrowed? Celebrities do it all the time.
September 4, 2008 at 6:43 pm #637385
westwoodmomMemberJust one of Cindy McCain’s many homes are worth more than that, just a day’s spending for her.
September 4, 2008 at 6:48 pm #637386
mellaw6565MemberRemember – Cindy comes from money! She probably owns the necklace.
September 4, 2008 at 6:52 pm #637387
acemotelParticipantAll that money, and she still looked ridiculous. IMO
September 4, 2008 at 6:57 pm #637388
nuniMemberIt’s possible if she did buy them that they aren’t brand new. People with lots of money can afford expensive things and are still capable of giving money away. Besides, did anybody ask her personally if she actually owned all the stuff? Assumptions.

AnonymousInactiveI’m curious how much it cost to stage and conduct the rock concert, I mean speech, that Obama gave in Denver, with all Greco-Roman columns and lighting and such. Anyone?
September 4, 2008 at 7:12 pm #637390
CPMemberAh – the first Palin regurgitation of the day! I bet it was comparable to Cindy’s outfit and looked a lot better.
September 4, 2008 at 7:19 pm #637391
nuniMemberpolitics really brings out the best in people.
September 4, 2008 at 7:20 pm #637392
CPMemberBut not the best in fashion, evidently.
September 4, 2008 at 7:45 pm #637393
CaduceusMemberNR-You’re comparing two completely different things.
An EVENT staging his speech has absolutely no comparison to a couple of old rich broads wearing pointlessly over expensive clothes.
Please don’t make this another political debate. And no I’m not a Dem or a Repub.
September 4, 2008 at 7:54 pm #637394
acemotelParticipantMs. McCain was chaperoning the prom. (why does this whole thing feel like high school?)
September 4, 2008 at 8:09 pm #637395
AnonymousInactiveCad – You’re right. The staging of an event and the cost of an outfit are completely different.
However, in terms of importance and relevance, I think they are pretty comparable.
September 4, 2008 at 8:19 pm #637396
CaduceusMemberNR – I recognize your point, in that both are flashy and entirely un-necessary.
But there is a large difference. At least in the way I see it. The event brought people together, people of like minds who can come together to one place, one point in time. Which in itself was probably overwhelming. And the physical appearance was simply an ambiance catering to low/middle class people being taken out of their ordinary in order to enhance their visit.
I don’t find the materialism to cater to anyone but people who can admire the price tag.
There is no excuse to be wearing a house, just for sh**s and giggles.
September 4, 2008 at 8:23 pm #637397
CPMemberMy guess is that the Dem’s columns weren’t brought about by child labor. Need we bring up where those diamonds came from? I think that’s a major difference.
September 4, 2008 at 8:24 pm #637398
JenVMemberSimmer down, people. lord, I didn’t even mean for this to be political. More fashion minded. It just blew my mind. That was such an ugly dress (in my taste, anyway) I couldn’t believe it cost so much.
September 4, 2008 at 8:31 pm #637399
CPMemberThanks for the reality check… *whew*
Oscar de la Renta makes some gorgeous dresses and I believe she may have skipped right over them. I love how all the first ladies are going the Jackie-O route this year. If only we could bring Oleg Cassini back from designing dresses for David’s Bridal and back to dressing potential first ladies…
September 5, 2008 at 4:09 am #637400
MrJTMemberNR, can you justify the cost of re-working a perfectly good stage just so Grandpa can be “closer” to his people ?
September 5, 2008 at 5:07 am #637401
mellaw6565MemberMrJT – It was so Grandpa could see his people! LOL

JoBParticipantMake no mistake about it.. the show of excess at the Republican convention was created to show americans what they can’t have.. while creating the illusion that their policies will deliver that excess to the rest of us.
it’s just another pot at the end of a very tarnished rainbow…
but.. look who’s buying it.
September 5, 2008 at 6:06 pm #637403
nuniMemberThere are many people out there that have things that I can’t have. BOOHOO!!!
September 5, 2008 at 6:08 pm #637404
CPMemberOh, nuni, don’t make the mistake that we want what they have.
September 5, 2008 at 6:09 pm #637405
JenVMembernuni, every time I see your name I think of that hilarious sketch from SNL and it makes me giggle. ;)

nuniMemberCP, I was kidding…I couldn’t care less about what they have. My point is that there are ALWAYS going to be people out there that have more than others. Usually they work hard for what they have and sometimes they are born in to money. I guess I don’t really understand why that bothers some people so much.
