School Bake Sale for Hurricane Relief @ West Seattle Montessori School & Academy
Oct 20 @ 8:00 am – 9:00 am

Our middle school students are organizing a plan to help contribute to some of the rebuilding in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria. They researched and found a Montessori school similar to ours in San Juan called La Casa Montessori. This school has 130 students and operates a preprimary through elementary age Montessori program. Their school building has been hit with major structural damage, and a loss of a portion of their roof. Our Spanish teacher Suely called the director of the school and was able to reach her on the first day she had phone service after the hurricane. She said several of her students’ families have lost everything, and that the destruction was everywhere. She was very grateful and encouraged by our call from one Montessori school to another in this extremely challenging time.

Throughout October we will be holding bake sales every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 am-9 am near the school arrival drop off area (11215 15th Ave SW) (NO Sales on October 13 or October 27 as middle school is not in session). Breakfast goodies will be available for purchase for $3 (or more if you’d like to donate more!). All proceeds will go directly to La Casa Montessori via their GoFundMe campaign.

Here is a link to their Facebook page as well.

There are Montessori schools worldwide, and this opportunity to connect with our own Global Montessori Community is a powerful reminder that all we need to do is extend ourselves just a little bit to make a life changing difference. Our students are truly leading mindfully and thinking globally with this fundraiser, and we thank you for your help in advance!

Tom Collier benefit concert for West Seattle High School Scholarship Fund @ Kenyon Hall
Oct 21 @ 7:30 pm

JOIN US: Saturday October 21 at Kenyon Hall (7904 35th Ave SW) for music by Tom Collier and friends!

Tom Collier, newly awarded Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington, and most famous West Seattle High School (WSHS) alumni musician, is bringing his quartet to play a a concert to raise scholarship funds for his alma mater West Seattle High School’s Scholarship Fund.

Performing with Tom are three exceptional world-class Seattle-based musicians: guitarist Dr. John Hanford, electric bassist and WSHS class of ’71 Dan Dean, and drummer Steve Korn. They will be playing their arrangements of pop and blues songs as well as a couple of jazz standards and original compositions.

John Hanford, whose PhD dissertation explored the guitar techniques and music of Jimi Hendrix, has played in many of the nation’s top rock and pop bands including The Wailers, Merilee Rush, and others too numerous to mention here. Dan Dean got his start playing percussion in Mrs. Nelson’s Senior Orchestra at Madison Jr. High School before launching a career in music performing with such luminaries as Donny Hathaway, Della Reese, Freddie Hubbard, Ernestine Anderson, and many more. Steve Korn was for many years an artist-in-residence at the University Of Washington before leaving to concentrate on his very successful photography business. Steve has released three CDs internationally of his own compositions on the Origin label and each was nominated as Northwest Recording of the Year by Earshot Jazz. Steve won the Earshot Golden Ear Award for Northwest Emerging Artist for the year 2000.

As for Tom Collier, in addition to his illustrious musical achievements (see www.tomcolliervibes.com for more info), in 2016 had his CD “Across The Bridge” receive worldwide radio airplay as well as several critically favorable reviews in such journals as Downbeat magazine, Jazziz magazine, and Jazz Times magazine. The album features his original compositions reflecting places in West Seattle that were important icons of his childhood. The recording also features two world-renowned guitar virtuosos, Bill Frisell and Larry Coryell (who unfortunately passed away earlier this year). They were honored to have the album recognized by the Recording Academy, where it as placed on the 2017 GRAMMY ballot, although it missed getting on the final nominating ballot (there were over 300 entries in the jazz category ballot).

“I am pleased to be able to participate in this special concert as a way of paying back the school that provided me with a world-class education and life skills needed to succeed in my own career”, Tom says of the upcoming evening.

Please mark the date and come to Kenyon Hall to enjoy an evening of iconic music while supporting a young generation of West Seattle High School future leaders, scientists, engineers, doctors, and artists. Seating space in Kenyon Hall is limited, so be sure to make early reservations by visiting: http://kenyonhall.org or calling 206-937-3613.

•$750 covers the cost of a citizenship application, helping someone reach a very special goal.
•$1,000 provides training for 90 parents of children in our early learning programs, teaching them about the school system and how to advocate for their child.
•$3,000 pays for a year of citizenship classes so that 15 people can learn English and prepare for the citizenship exam.
•$6,000 covers a year of job training and support so that an immigrant or refugee can begin a living wage career.

Supporters giving $1,000 or more per year will be welcomed into our exclusive Sparklight Circle and are invited to our popular Grillin’ with Dillon donor recognition event.
