Litter League volunteer community cleanups @ Various
Aug 5 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am

I hope you will join us this summer in keeping our local West Seattle Morgan Junction clean. To make it easy for everyone to help out, we have scheduled in advance for five clean up mornings to pick up litter!

The dates are all on Sunday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00:

May 27
July 8
August 5
Sept 2
Oct 7

Yes, May 27 and Sept. 2 fall during holiday weekends, but we know that many people will be in town and able to come!

We will meet by the ATM near the Shell station and I will have vests, litter picker-uppers, buckets and bags for everyone. Please bring and wear your gardening gloves!

I will do a brief safety talk at 9:30 – mainly showing the kids what a needle looks like and to alert me if they find one, don’t pick it up.

This is a wonderful opportunity for family volunteering, meaningful for small kids and something they can really help with! So bring your whole family. Or come alone or with a friend. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on-leash and you can do the outer parts of MJ to get you and your pup some exercise. The families with young kids focus on the main intersection areas.

This summer, I am arranging with Seattle Light to let me keep the equipment all summer, so it is also available if you want to tackle an area in your immediate neighborhood around MJ (or if anyone wants to clean up along 35th from the Library to Trenton, that area really needs some help). Just let me know!

You can just drop in or you can RSVP, which is helpful to me in terms of how many people to expect and to ensure I have enough support equipment.

Rainy days don’t cancel unless it’s a downpour.

Stephen has followed his passion for whales from Iceland to the Azores, and West Seattle! Stephen most recently traveled to Monterey Bay, where he witnessed a rare predation event.

Whale Trail Founder Donna Sandstrom will also share updates about SRKW recovery efforts and how you can help. Donna was recently appointed to Gov. Inslee’s Task Force on SRKW Recovery, and its Vessel Impacts working group. Hope to see you there.

Buy tickets now to reserve your seat.

This is the next in the 2018 Orca Talk series hosted by The Whale Trail in West Seattle. Thanks to Nucor Steel for sponsoring this presentation!

About the Speaker

Stephen Rink is a Whale Trail volunteer who has been fascinated with whales since the age of 5. He has maintained an affinity for the ocean, and continues to travel the world to see different marine life and photograph them along the way. Stephen moved to Seattle in 2017 to be closer to killer whales and participate in recovery efforts. He hopes to continue to travel as a photographer and eventually photograph whales aboard expedition vessels in Antarctica.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail is a series of sites to view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment.

Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 50 million people each year. The Whale Trail is currently adding new sites along the North American west coast, from California to British Columbia.

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. Many members of the team first met on the successful effort to return Springer, the orphaned orca, to her pod.

The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State. Join us!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Summer Concerts at Hiawatha 2018
Aug 9 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

As announced by the Admiral Neighborhood Association:
July 19th
URAL THOMAS AND THE PAIN

Ural Thomas started singing beneath his mother’s knee in church at the age of 3. By high school he led the doo-wop group the Mono Rays. Ural’s voice and songwriting soon gained national attention and he found himself sharing the stage with the likes of James Brown, Otis Redding, Johnny Guitar Watson, and “Little” Stevie Wonder. He played the Apollo 44 times. He backed the Northwest’s biggest soul and garage outfits of the 1960s (The Kingsmen, Paul Revere and the Raiders, Cavaliers Unlimited) and he never for a moment stopped teaching, singing and loving soul music.

July 26th
GOOD QUIVER

Good Quiver is a relatively new band, but the bandmates have a long and winding history playing music together, featuring high-school friends Ehssan Karimi on drums and West Seattle resident Martin Celt on bass. He and vocalist Katelyn Berreth have also been playing music together since high school. Their groovy, fresh sound is rooted in soul, jazz, funk, hip hop, and “everlasting friendship”!

August 2nd
MICAIAH SAWYER

Micaiah Sawyer is a prolific singer-songwriter from Olympia, playing a catchy blend of folk, blues and rock. Her relatable and wise-beyond-years lyrics quickly make an impression on the listener, connecting them with not just a piece of music, but with the artist herself. Armed with an accompaniment of energetic and talented musicians, Micaiah recently won the Sound Off 2018 competition hosted by Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture and KEXP 90.3 FM. She will be releasing her first full-length album this summer.

August 9th
GENERAL MOJO’S

General Mojo’s is a space-elevator ride of psychedelic pop, reminiscent of the past with all courses set for the distant future. Despite their light-hearted approach to stage presence and style, General Mojo’s provides a serious sound, collecting the hook-laden melodies and complex lucid solo sections evocative of Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer. General Mojo’s plays both the loose and groovy rock you remember and a buttoned-down psychedelic sound you’ve never experienced before!

August 16th
THE SERVICE PROVIDERS

Labeled a “Superband” by The Stranger, the Service Providers are as mysterious as they are deeply rooted in the northwest music scene: “Not all bands are good. These ones are.” The Service Providers is a new project of Mike Musburger, Arthur Roberts (formerly of The Posies), Dave Fox, and Brian Naubert.

August 23rd
CASPAR BABYPANTS

Summer favorite Caspar Babypants will be back to sing songs for parents and kids ages 0-6 with a catchy simple sing-along good-time folk acoustic country rock-and-roll feel that will make you smile and dance at the same time.

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Aug 12 all-day

(Note:  Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Aug 16 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Summer Concerts at Hiawatha 2018
Aug 23 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

The 19th Annual Arts in Nature Festival August 25th & 26th at Camp Long will feature art, nature, and neighborhood. The theme for artist presentation is “Convergence”. The event is proudly presented by the Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association.

This year, the Arts in Nature Festival is particularly excited to feature music, on August 25th, by Reverend Pat Wright’s Total Experience Gospel Choir, as she is about to retire. The festival will also feature music from artists including Naomi Wachira, De Cajon, and Gamelan Pacifica. For those of you who want to experience poetry in nature, there will be a reading featuring Seattle Civic Poet Anastacia Renee, J Mace III, and Jordan Chaney.

There will be visual installations by Vaughn Bell, Sarah Kavage & Aaron Haba, live mural painting by Angelina Villalobos and Roache the Muralist.

You can become part of the festivities and create your own works of art in nature by participating in multiple interactive, family-friendly art activities, including performance by Northwest Puppet Center, linocuts, capoeira demonstrations & a labyrinth.
