West Seattle synagogue listings:

KOL HANESHAMAH:

Kol HaNeshamah is an intimate congregation with a warm approach to tradition. Shabbat is the cornerstone of our community. We meet twice a month on the first and third Friday and Saturday to worship at Alki UCC, near Alki Beach in West Seattle.

Ours is a progressive synagogue rejoicing in Torah, Avodah (Worship/Prayer), Tzedek and Tikkun (Justice and Healing) but specializing in K’hillah (Community). We attract members from all around Seattle who believe a synagogue is a place to experience the joys of Judaism. We deeply believe in inclusivity. We are young, old, families, singles, single parents, interfaith, straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered.

Our Rabbi, with support from an ensemble of lay-leaders, conducts Friday night services in a welcoming musical environment. Services are followed by a community dairy and kosher fish potluck. Saturday mornings begin with study for both adults and children, followed by a Torah service for all.

Kol HaNeshamah offers a Hebrew school for children and an educational program for adults along with festive celebrations of Jewish holidays. We are also involved in Tikkun Olam activities, including support of the West Seattle Foodbank and Habitat for Humanity.

No dues or tickets are required for any of our services. If you are interested in membership, go to the membership page for details. Kol HaNeshamah is a member of the Union for Reform Judaism.

WordsWest Literary Series @ C & P Coffee Company
Dec 20 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Every third Wednesday at C & P Coffee, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to craft discussions and guided writing explorations for every experience level.

Here’s the October 2017 announcement:

Celebrating Filipino American Heritage Month, WordsWest Literary Series welcomes award-winning poet Roberto Ascalon and poet and playwright Robert Flor for “Home and Away,” an evening of poetry ranging from the unforgiving city streets to a small fishing town in Alaska, inquiring into the nature of place and community. WordsWest Literary Series is grateful for grant funding from Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and Poets & Writers, Inc. that allows us to pay our writers for their time and talent.

Roberto Ascalon has been a fellow with Artist Trust, Kundiman, and Jack Straw. He represented Seattle as a two-time National Poetry Slam Team member. Ascalon’s poem, “THE FIRE THIS TIME, or, How Come Some Brown Boys Get Blazed Right Before Class And Other Questions Without Marks” earned him the 2013 Rattle Poetry Prize and lead to a Pushcart nomination. He lives in a room in an old converted schoolhouse with a beautiful girl, a brand new baby, a wall size blackboard and books in every corner.

Robert Flor is a Seattle native raised in the city’s Central Area and Rainier Valley. He earned his doctorate in Higher Education Administration and Public Policy at the University of Oregon and holds an M.A. and B.A. in Education from Seattle University. Robert’s poems have appeared in Raven Chronicles, VietNow Magazine, Poetry on the Bus, Soundings Review, the Tamafyhr Mountain Poetry Review, Poets Against the War, and the Baseball Bard. His chapbook titled “Alaskero Memories” was published in Fall 2016 by Carayan Press, Inc. Robert co-chairs Pinoy Words Expressed Kultura Arts, a Filipino artist & writers organization, and he is a member of Theatre Puget Sound, Seattle Playwrights Studio, and the Dramatists Guild of America.

Every third Wednesday, 7pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to craft discussions and guided writing explorations for every experience level. Each month a community member from a local, independent business shares his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project. On October 18th, we welcome Annie Von Essen of Vessel Consulting.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw, and this season’s intern/co-curator is Joannie Stangeland. Join us on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/WordsWestLiterary
