‘Why Art Matters’ Panel @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Apr 12 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Councilmember Lisa Herbold (District 1, West Seattle & South Park) will participate in a discussion Wednesday evening about the role of public investments in the arts and the health of our community, plus the current landscape of dedicated arts funding. The panel, ‘Why Art Matters’ is co-sponsored by KUOW FM, the Office of Arts and Culture, and Councilmember Herbold and will include representatives from the Seattle Arts Commission, Seattle Symphony and Arts Corps.

WHAT:  ‘Why Art Matters’ panel with break-out sessions focusing on specific issues and action steps

WHEN: Wednesday, April 12
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
4408 Delridge Way SW, Seattle, WA 98106

WHO:
Councilmember Lisa Herbold
Marcie Sillman, KUOW
Vivian Phillips, Seattle Arts Commission
Simon Woods, Seattle Symphony
James Miles, Executive Director of Arts Corps.

Now more than ever, the arts play an important role in defining our identity and leading the way for racial equity. The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) are vital for our community’s well-being.

The 2018 federal budget released by Donald Trump proposes elimination of federal support for the NEA and CPB. A full federal budget proposal is expected in May, and will inspire a myriad questions about how to help numerous groups remain solvent continue this important work, as well as the larger question of what the elimination of government-sponsored cultural agencies communicates to Americans and the rest of the world.

Please NOTE: The event is FREE and guests are invited to RSVP online and in advance

Workshop on Supporting Local Immigrants and Refugees @ Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation
Jun 3 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Pathways and Networks for Justice Workshop on Supporting Local Immigrants and Refugees

Please join us! Presentations will be provided by the following workshop partners: ACLU, Casa Latina, OneAmerica, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Southwest Youth and Family Services

When: Saturday June 3rd from 10:00-1:00PM
Where: 7141 California Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98136 (Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation, in the basement meeting hall)
Free registration at Brown Paper Tickets (please register for accurate participant count).

Summary of workshop:
The Trump Administration has taken multiple steps to target the immigrant and refugee members of our community, including: attempts to institute a Muslim Ban, denying federal funds to Sanctuary Cities, racist speech resulting in large increases in hate crimes, unjust deportations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, to name a few. Many in our Greater Seattle community want to take action to help local immigrants and refugees; this workshop is designed to provide specifics on how to help.

This two-part workshop will: 1) provide a basic foundation for the current state of affairs for immigrants in the United States today, broken into four key areas, and 2) provide opportunities for community members and activists to learn about various organizations that are already mobilized to serve our immigrant neighbors within these four key areas (listed below).

Four key pathways to help local immigrants and refugees:
Path 1: Current Legislative Framework – the ACLU will provide an update on Trump’s attacks, including specifics as to how these proposed new laws and policies impact local immigrants, as well as ways we can fight back and advocate for policies reflecting a freedom/sanctuary community.

Path 2: Encountering Law Enforcement – it’s likely not a matter of “if” but “when” Federal law enforcement will amplify their actions against local immigrants. Casa Latina will discuss actions, strategies and tactics that are being developed to counter.

Path 3: Responding to Prejudice – Trump has unleashed much more free expression of prejudice, hatred and resentment through tactics of creating fear and encouraging blame against minorities. New laws and policies are being crafted that are rooted in racism and prejudice. OneAmerica will provide an overview of this dynamic and its impact on our communities. In addition, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) will provide a talk on the rise of Islamophobia.

Path 4: Meeting Basic Needs – Southwest Youth and Family Services will provide a talk on the most pressing needs for newly arrived immigrant families and their work around immigrant and refugee youth.

Additional immigrant/refugee support organizations invited to attend:Americans for Refugees and Immigrants; East African Community Services; El Centro de la Raza; Jewish Family Service; Northwest Immigrant Rights Project; Northwest Justice Project; Horn of Africa Services (HOAS); Open Doors for Multicultural Families; Refugee Woman’s Alliance; St. James Immigrant Assistance; Washington Community Action Network (CAN); White Center Community Development Association; World Relief Seattle.

Relay For Life is a grass roots, community-based team event and is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Relay is staffed and coordinated by volunteers in more than 5,200 communities and 27 countries. Volunteers give of their time and effort because they believe it’s time to take action against cancer.

SCHEDULE:

Friday evening:
6:00pmOpening Ceremony

Survivors define courage and inspire those facing a cancer diagnosis. Their strength is honored with each step they take around the first lap. If you know anyone who’s overcome cancer, invite them to join.

Caring for others is such a selfless act, which is why we honor caregivers with a lap. They often walk with the person they’ve supported.

Summer Solstice Sunset Watch 2017 @ Solstice Park
Jun 20 @ 8:45 pm

It’s time for the 33rd seasonal sunset watch!
This is also my last currently-scheduled event before the solar eclipse in August! Come and I’ll give tips and resources on safely observing the eclipse from Seattle, as well as a sites in Oregon. I’ve got more resources than anyone (practically) on safe observing for kids aged 18-months to 6 years, so bring the kiddos.
Tuesday, June 20 at 9:00pm (so come at 8:45pm)
Actual sunset is supposed to be at 9:11pm, but we have noticed that the Sun sets about 10 minutes earlier than the USNO says, because of the horizon altitude.
When: The solstice moment is Tuesday, June 20 at 9:24pm so maybe we’ll stick around and celebrate that too, for once!
Where: Solstice Park – all the way up the hill from the tennis courts (or, if you’re not in Seattle, wherever you have a view of the western horizon!)
Who: Everyone welcome, as usual. (Please do leash your dogs as we usually have a good number of people, kids, and other dogs around.)
Come watch the sunset at Solstice Park in West Seattle. I’ll be there even if it is cloudy because sometimes the Sun peeks through just as it begins to set.
Everyone is welcome, see you there!

Harvest Dinner Potluck & Talent Show @ Highland Park Improvement Club
Sep 30 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Join your HPIC family around the dinner table! This is the perfect time of the year to break bread with your neighbors, count your blessings, to share meaningful stories, soul-nourishing food, and build our sense of community. Celebrate the harvest by bringing a seasonal home-made dish to share. The HPIC bar will be open.

And back by popular demand: We will be hosting a talent show! The gifted & comedic duo – Chris Huson and Krissy Otis – will be coordinating and hosting the talent show. What are we looking for?

A performance that is no longer than five minutes. There will be a gong reminder, if needed.
A family friendly act (if you have a burlesque talent, that would be a different show).
No age restriction. Talent is talent, regardless of age.
Email us (hpic1919@gmail.com) to sign up for the Talent Show! You know you want to…

Also, we’ll be collecting food for the White Center Food Bank, so bring a non-perishable food item to donate.

West Seattle Meaningful Movies: ‘Dr. Strangelove’ @ Neighborhood House High Point
Jan 6 @ 6:30 pm – 9:00 pm

This year at the West Seattle Meaningful Movies, a number of neighborhood organizations are showing a movie of their choice. Here’s a chance to get to know West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice!

On Saturday, January 6,
West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice present

“Dr. Strangelove,” directed by Stanley Kubrick (1964) and starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott, is a comedy ridiculing the nuclear-war plans of the United States and the Soviet Union. An insane general launches a first strike against the Soviet Union, and a President and his advisors and generals try to call the launch back. In many ways this film is too close to being an actual documentary. It eerily resembles our nuclear predicament today. Despite widespread concern about Trump’s mental stability, he remains in control of the world’s most powerful nuclear arsenal.

93 minutes

Good news! The United Nations has passed a Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It is the first legally binding international agreement to completely eliminate nuclear weapons. (The United States has not yet signed on.) And on December 10, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) won the Nobel Peace Prize–in part for its work to help pass this treaty. West Seattle Neighbors for Peace and Justice are a part of the ICAN coalition.

After the movie Lilly Adams of Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility (also part of the ICAN coalition), will share ideas for how we can move toward a nuclear-weapons-free world.

6:30 – doors open for refreshments and social time
7:00 – movie, followed by optional facilitated discussion

At High Point Neighborhood House
6400 Sylvan Way SW, Seattle 98126
Bus numbers 21 and 128

NO CHARGE, but donations gratefully received.
