It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show @ Kenyon Hall
Dec 13 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is excited to announce the return of It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show, playing this December at Kenyon Hall. Based the classic 1946 Frank Capra film, playwright Joe Landry’s take on It’s a Wonderful Life, comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. The ensemble of characters bring the town of Bedford Falls to the stage, and George Bailey to the fateful Christmas Eve when, as he contemplates ending his life, he realizes the difference he makes in the lives of others.

This live radio show will be performed at historic Kenyon Hall, one of West Seattle’s favorite venues, December 5, 6, 12 and 13 at 7:30 pm and December 7 and 14 at 3 pm. Bring the family and make this a holiday tradition! Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets <http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/917572>, and at Kenyon Hall on performance days. Prices are $18 for adults and $15 for students & seniors.

If you close your eyes during this production you won’t miss a beat because all of the components — the sound effects, the organ, the commercials, and the Mistletones — work together successfully to recreate the live radio experience of the 1940’s and 50’s.

Dec 27 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Saturday, December 27th, 7:30 pm at Kenyon Hall:

Breakin’ Up Christmas Concert and Square Dance
featuring Erynn Marshall & Carl Jones from Galax, VA, with local support from Charmaine Slaven, Tony Mates, Catherine Alexander!

There is a southern Appalachian tradition during the 12 days between December 25 and “Old Christmas” (January 5th) of having house parties and dances. Rugs are rolled back and the music and dancing continue in the wee hours, with revelers sometimes going house-to-house. More info about the tradition of “breaking up Christmas” in this article out of Galax, VA.

We’re fortunate to be having masters of the old time music tradition, Carl Jones and Erynn Marshall, who live in Galax, Virginia will be passing through town during that time. Carl and Erynn will perform a concert before the dance, then will be joined by Tony Mates on bass, Catherine Alexander on guitar, and Charmaine Slaven who will teach and call the dances! No experience needed!

No table seats for this show. General admission $10; seniors and students $8.
$4 for children 12 and under.

To make a reservation, please e-mail kenyonhall@earthlink.net with your request. You’ll receive an e-mail confirming your reservation. For complete program information, please visit www.kenyonhall.org.

A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play @ Kenyon Hall
Dec 4 @ 7:30 pm – 9:00 pm

Twelfth Night Productions presents “A Christmas Carol: A Live Radio Play” at Kenyon Hall:

Twelfth Night Production (TNP) is proud to present A Christmas Carol – A Live Radio Play this holiday season. TNP’s Holiday Radio plays have become an annual tradition for community members seeking to revel in holiday cheer with friends and family. Previous radio show productions have included It’s A Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street.

This holiday season, join us for a retelling of the classic A Christmas Carol, brought to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast. Experience the magic of season as the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future visit our hero Ebenezer Scrooge to teach him about generosity, love and the power of giving. As always, our radio program will begin with an original short featuring Dick Doubleheart and the Twelfth Night Comedy Mystery Playhouse, written by John Ruoff.

Our cast of talented Radio players also includes our incredible Foley (sound effects) actors, the wonderful 1929 Wurlitzer Pipe Organ, and our Fabulous Mistletones sharing traditional carols before the show.

“If you close your eyes during this production you won’t miss a beat because all of the components – the sound effects, the organ, the commercials, and the Mistletones – work together successfully to recreate the live radio experience of the 1940’s and 50’s.” —Drama in the Hood.

This live radio show will be performed at historic Kenyon Hall, one of West Seattle’s favorite venues, December 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 7:30 pm and December 6 and 13 at 3 pm. Bring the family and make this a holiday tradition!

Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at Kenyon Hall, 7904 35th Ave. SW, Seattle WA, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $18 for adults and $15 for students & seniors.

“Rejuvenating our Souls” @ St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church
Dec 12 @ 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

“You were born to walk with God…So why would you walk alone?”
– Dr. Steve McSwain

On the afternoon of December 12 from 1:30-4:30, join St. John’s for a way-point in the middle of the Advent season. For a few hours, rest in quiet, make space for the Holy, and engage in quiet activities (suggestions will be offered and some materials provided.) This season of waiting and expectant anticipation can often incite chaos, anxiety, and sadness within our hearts. In the ninth century, Paschasius Radbertus wrote of one of the ancient names for Mary: Star of the Sea. He offered that Mary is a guide to be followed on the way to Christ “lest we capsize amid the storm-tossed waves of the sea.”

On December 12, let’s savor the afternoon together as a respite from the sometimes turbulent times of the march from Advent to Christmas and rejuvenate our souls together so we may more fully engage the excitement of Incarnation during the remaining weeks leading to Christmas.

Rejuvenating our Souls:
December 12th, 1:30-4:30 pm
St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church

$10 suggested donation for non-members. Please RSVP to mcarroccino@sjbwestseattle.org or by calling St. John’s at 206-937-4545.

Art Under $100 is almost doubling in size this year, with 70 amazing artists convening at the Seattle Design Center on Saturday, December 12, from 2-8 p.m. New this year is a ticketed VIP hour from 1-2pm, which allows patrons to get first pick of the coveted affordable artwork, along with champagne and chocolate. The beloved event continues to gather momentum, celebrating its eleventh year in a spacious venue in Georgetown/SODO. For holiday shoppers, AU100 offers an unsurpassed opportunity to discover unique, affordable art while supporting local artists.

Art Under $100 began in a residential garage in the South Park neighborhood. Wendy Woldenberg remembers, “We had about 100 people at our first sale. Each year it grows. Last year we hosted more than 2400 guests. People are drawn by the quality of the art, the opportunity to purchase it directly from the artists, and because it’s a party!” South Park Arts President Raina Anderson notes, “It’s real art, and it’s really affordable– that’s what brings people back year after year.”

So what exactly happens at the fun and festive event known as AU100?

· The ART: Paintings, sculptures, jewelry, textiles, photography, blown glass, cast glass, stained glass, wood, encaustic, dioramas, woodblock printing, letterpress and more! And nothing priced over $100.

· There’s art made by YOU: Create a handmade treasure with The Makery, a free art lab that runs on reclaimed materials and creativity–the perfect, kid-friendly, family fun activity.

· AU100 VIP HOUR: Have a blissful hour of early shopping (from 1:00-2:00 pm) with easy access to all 70 artists. Enjoy champagne, chocolates, special guests, and Art raffles just for you. Proceeds from the VIP Hour benefit South Park Arts.

· Plus there’s MUSIC: Vinyl spinning DJs provide a live soundtrack.

· FOOD & DRINK: 314 Pie and other food trucks will be on site. Delicious beer, wine, and the signature cocktail for the 21+ crowd and fine coffee from bicycle-powered Café Red. Soft drinks, Seattle Chocolates [10], and Seattle Popcorn, too!

· And there’s the infamous AU100 RAFFLE: The Mysterious Bugle Boy and several surprise local celebrities will announce Art Raffle winners every 20 minutes. Winners pick their prizes from Art by participating artists.

· Purchase the South Park Arts commemorative glow-in-the-dark t-shirts, aprons, and sweatshirts designed by graphic artist onesevennine specially for AU100.

Fred Talks series: Hanukkah stories @ Alki UCC/Kol HaNeshamah
Dec 12 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Per Kol HaNeshamah, their next “FRED Talk”:

Essayist, poet and award-winning storyteller Merna Ann Hecht will share an evening of Jewish stories taken from the treasure troves of both Eastern European and Sephardic tradition, Saturday evening, Dec. 12, beginning at 8 pm at West Seattle’s Kol HaNeshamah progressive reform synagogue community.

Listen to Hecht as she draws from Jewish tales of wisdom, stories of the great teaching rabbis and Hanukkah lore. This lively evening is slated for listeners ages nine to 99.

“In our digital age, storytelling transports us back to a slower, gentler time,” Hecht says. “The stories I will share are a celebration of the light and hope of Hanukkah, and speak to the love of storytelling that is woven into Jewish history and tradition.”

Hecht, the recipient of the 2008 National Storytelling Network Brimstone Award for Applied Storytelling, is also the founder and co-director of the Stories of Arrival: Refugee and Immigrant Youth Voices Poetry project at Foster High School in Tukwila, WA. She teaches creative writing, humanities and social justice courses for the University of WA, Tacoma.

Hecht is part of an ongoing series of FRED or Fresh Relevant Educational and Dynamic talks at Kol HaNeshamah, 6115 SW Hinds in West Seattle. The talks feature members from the progressive synagogue who share topics or skills they have with the community.

The suggested donation for the evening is $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and students. FRED Talks series is part of Kol HaNeshamah’s Annual Giving Campaign. KHN is a registered 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization.

West Seattle Polar Bear Swim 2016 at Alki
Jan 1 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

This starts from the sandy section of Alki, right across from Duke’s (58th/Alki) on January 1st, 2016. From longtime organizer Mark Ufkes:

The West Seattle Polar Bear Swim is on!
10 am Jan. 1, 2016 in front of Duke’s on Alki. We line up along the beach, hold hands, and after a short count down, we all run into the water. Last year, over 500 participated. We go into the water at 10 am sharp after the count down, so get there a little early. Bring water shoes, towel, change of clothes and your hopes and dreams for 2016.

Duke’s clam chowder is generously provided by Duke and his crew. This is a great way to wash away the complexities of 2015 and welcome the unlimited possibilities of 2016.

Mar 23 @ 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

The fun begins on Wednesday, March 23 at Kol HaNeshamah in the sanctuary for our Purim celebration. Purim is a fun holiday which celebrates the ancient tale of Queen Esther’s bravery against the wickedness of an evil despot. The story reminds all of us to stand up to xenophobia and bigotry against those who are different. We begin with the Megilla reading at 6:30 pm, a costume parade at 7:00 pm and hamantashen throughout!

Then, on Saturday, March 26 at 7:00 pm we continue the merriment at Kenyon Hall for our annual Purim Shpiel. Everyone is invited to Shushan Abbey, the Motown Musical – home to our KHNPurim Spiel.

‘Jazz Sunday’ service @ Admiral Congregational Church UCC
Apr 3 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am

West Seattle’s Admiral Congregational Church invites the entire community to join them for their joyful annual post-Easter celebration, Jazz Sunday, on Sunday April 3, 10:30 am.

Now in its twelfth year, this exuberant celebration takes place during the 10:30 service in the church’s sanctuary. Admiral’s director of music, pianist/organist Keith Terhune, is a well-known fixture on the local jazz scene and created this annual event “to inspire us to continue celebrating, even after Easter is over,” says church member Anita Shaffer. “Every year, the worship service following Easter Sunday is jazz-inspired and music-filled, often with Seattle jazz celebrities adding to the experience.”

Joining Terhune and the Admiral Choir this year will be renowned vocal stylist Makini Magee, bassist Mike Eytcheson, and percussionist Mike Bayer, local legends all on the Seattle music scene. All three have performed with legends ranging from Winton Marsalis to Roy Ayers.

Admiral Congregational is a member of the United Church of Christ, a progressive Protestant denomination that consistently champions engaged spiritual practice and informed social
participation. Their website says that they “actively welcome all peoples, regardless of their sex, sexuality, gender identity, social location, economic or immigration status, theology or history.”

Adds Shaffer, “So what if Easter is over for another year? Wear your Easter hat anyway and join us!”

Admission is of course free and the public is warmly invited.

Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Radio Play @ Kenyon Hall
Dec 9 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is proud to present The Lux Radio Theater version of the classic 1947 film Miracle on 34th Street. TNP’s Holiday Radio plays have become an annual tradition for community members seeking to revel in holiday cheer with friends and family. Previous radio show productions have included It’s A Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol.

The radio play is based on the holiday movie favorite of the same name and will be presented as a live 1940’s radio broadcast. Miracle on 34th Street tells the timeless story of an old man who calls himself Kris Kringle and is hired as the Macy’s department store Santa. His claim to be the real Santa Claus becomes a court case and a young child’s belief could make all the difference. “Faith is believing when common sense tells you not to.”

Our cast of talented Radio players also includes our incredible Foley (sound effects) actors and the one-of-a-kind 1929 Wurlitzer Pipe Organ.

“If you close your eyes during this production you won’t miss a beat because all of the components – the sound effects, the organ, the commercials, and the Mistletones – work together successfully to recreate the live radio experience of the 1940’s and 50’s.” Drama in the Hood.

This live radio show will be performed at historic Kenyon Hall, one of West Seattle’s favorite venues, December 9, 10, 16 and 17 at 7:30 pm and December 11 and 18 at 3:00pm. Bring the family and make this a holiday tradition! Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets, and at Kenyon Hall, 7904 35th Ave. SW, Seattle WA, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $18 for adults and $15 for students & seniors.

For every toy donated, you will receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win a great collaborative gift pack with something from each of the breweries given away at the end of the pub crawl! We thought this was a great way to make this event even more special and help a great charity. So help some kids in need of a great Christmas, and join us for a night of fun in West Seattle December 10th!”

Miracle on 34th Street: A Live Radio Play @ Kenyon Hall
Dec 10 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm
