Del Rey, Adam Franklin, & The Quiet American with special guest Matt Weiner @ Kenyon Hall
Oct 1 @ 7:30 pm

Sunday, October 1, at 7:30 – Del Rey, Adam Franklin, and The Quiet American, with special guest Matt Weiner.

Kenyon Hall favorite Del Rey plays a syncopated style of guitar and ukulele, based on prewar blues and barrelhouse piano traditions. She also has a fashion sense that would make Minnie Pearl smile!

Adam Franklin is a superb exponent of blues and ragtime from a Golden Age of American music. With a voice that is both powerful and soulful and equally at home on National resonator guitar and mandolin, Adam’s performances are intense, energetic, and highly entertaining.

The Quiet American are Aaron and Nicole Keim, an acclaimed roots music and Americana duo, who play old style music for new-fangled times, with great harmony singing and multiple instruments.

Matt Weiner is Seattle’s premier stand-up string bass artist.

Freebo and Alice Howe @ Kenyon Hall
Oct 13 @ 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm

Freebo is a genuine folk, rock and blues icon who, after over 40 years of recording and touring with many of the great artists of our time (Bonnie Raitt 10 years, CSN, Maria Muldaur, John Mayall, Ringo Starr, Dr. John, Neil Young, & many more) is regarded as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of today. A multi award winner and finalist in numerous songwriting contests, Freebo was also recognized as the Best Folk Artist 2007 by the Los Angeles Music Awards. In addition, he has appeared on Saturday Night Live, The Muppet Show, The Midnight Special, and in concert with the legendary Spinal Tap.

Freebo’s compassionate concern for the world and people around him, as evidenced both in his lyrics and his open stage banter, has helped him connect with listeners worldwide. He takes an audience from insights about what kind of positive mark we hope to leave on the world upon our own passing with “Standing Ovation” to where you stand with your pets and your partner with “She Loves My Dog More Than Me.” A musical evening with Freebo is guaranteed to be astute, insightful, clever, and truly melodic.

At once timeless and original, Boston singer-songwriter Alice Howe combines a soulful, impeccably tuned voice with exquisitely crafted poetry. A lifelong songwriter, Alice’s musical sensibility lies in ’60s folk and ’70s Southern California songwriters, with comparisons drawn to the pure, distilled sounds of Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell. As a performer, Alice is sure-footed and captivating, familiar to her audience from the very first song.

During her three years in Seattle, Alice became a familiar face in the acoustic music scene, playing a variety of local gigs, from the Doe Bay Cafe on Orcas Island to the stage at Dusty Strings. In the summer of 2016, Alice returned to her home town of Boston, and has been busy making herself known on the stages at Club Passim, the Burren Backroom, and the me&thee coffeehouse. Alice has opened for the likes of Antje Duvekot, Ellis Paul, Chris Trapper, Vance Gilbert, and Brooks Williams.

At their Kenyon Hall show, Freebo will be playing bass with Alice on her songs, and Alice will be singing harmony with Freebo on many of his songs. We’re very excited to have them both together on the same night, and we know that you’ll truly enjoy the energy and connection they’ll bring to our stage.

Please visit www.freebomusic.com and www.alicehowe.com for more information.

Tickets for Freebo and Alice Howe are $20 general and $18 seniors/students. No table seats for this performance.

‘The Nance’ @ ArtsWest Playhouse & Gallery
Oct 26 @ 7:30 pm

Who: ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery presents THE NANCE, featuring Richard Gray and Jeff Steitzer
Where: ArtsWest Playhouse and Gallery
What: THE NANCE, By Douglas Carter Beane
When: Opens Thursday, October 26, 2017 | Closes Sunday, November 19, 2017
Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30pm | Sundays at 3:00pm

Tickets: General Admission: $40.00 | Seniors (65+): $35 | Students: $19 |
TeenTix (door only): $5

Tickets on sale now at http://www.artswest.org/theatre/buy-tickets/

ArtsWest’s second production of its 2017-18 I AM Season, Douglas Carter Beane’s THE NANCE is a musical play set in the raucous world of 1930s burlesque.

In THE NANCE, Richard Gray plays the role of Chauncey Miles, a performer specializing in a very specific kind of burlesque: a “nance” act, which features bawdy songs, double entendre, and – most prominently – broad caricatures of homosexual stereotypes. But there’s one important twist to Chauncey’s act. While most “nance” performers were straight, Chauncey is, in fact, gay. Amid the all-too-common police raids of gay meeting places in 1930s New York, that fact alone could place him in real danger.

Richard Gray has found much to admire about Chauncey Miles. “I love all of the contrasts in this beautifully complicated character,” says Gray. “He seems strong and confident, but is also quite broken. He both needs love and fears it. He is at times broadly comic and at times cutting with a still, dry wit. And I love the politics of it – this gay performer who also happens to be a Republican. He is both charming and deeply flawed.”

Despite the difficulties of such a complex role, Gray – an established theater veteran with 25 credits at The 5th Avenue Theatre, in addition to being an award-winning composer – feels ready for the challenge. “It is an exciting and a bit daunting mountain to climb,” says Gray, adding, “I can’t wait.”

Joining Richard Gray in THE NANCE is Jeff Steitzer, who has acted in Seattle since 1975 and amassed several lifetime’s worth of theater credits. With roles ranging from Broadway’s INHERIT THE WIND to NBC’s 30 ROCK and the HALO video game series, Steitzer brings a wealth of experience to the role of Efram, the “First Banana” in Chauncey’s world of burlesque.

“I love comedy and I love Rich Gray,” says Jeff Steitzer. “Doing THE NANCE allows me to indulge my enthusiasm for both!” Steitzer listed one simple reason why he’s excited to work at ArtsWest: Artistic Director Mathew Wright. “All my friends who’ve worked for him have had a great time,” says Steitzer, “and I’m all for having a great time!”
