The Esoterics ‘EXCELSIS ‘ choral concert @ Holy Rosary Catholic Church
Dec 2 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

“EXCELSIS – Contemplating extremity” will be performed at 8:00 pm @ Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Two world premiere commissions, a Pulitzer-prize-winner, and more –this is music you won’t hear anywhere else!

In the final concert of its 24th season, The Esoterics will cast its choral gaze upward, to consider the forces that propel us to greater heights of consciousness. This December, we welcome the transforming embrace of the celestial feminine in the songs of EXCELSIS.

The ensemble is excited to welcome two Philadelphia composers who were commissioned by The Esoterics to write works that will receive their world premieres in EXCELSIS. Andrea Clearfield’s Khandroma sets a Tibetan poem by Sienna Craig that honors the dakini, the ancient Buddhist spirits that dance across the sky. Kala Pierson composed Flung open, setting a poem of her own creation earlier this year, while on a residency at the Bloedel Reserve on Bainbridge Island. Pierson says about her commission:

“For me, one of the joys of writing choral music is finding fresh approaches to what I call the ‘secular cathedral piece’ – moving and powerful music that, without setting religious texts, still elegantly evokes the ‘cathedral-scale’ sacred music of the western choral tradition. As we feel in the best choral performances, the singers are in fact worshipping one another. And as any fan of The Esoterics knows, one couldn’t hope for better musicians to realize this concept. “

Both Andrea and Kala will join us in Seattle for the entire concert weekend to work with the ensemble and meet our audience. In addition to these two premieres, the group will perform Paul John Rudoi’s Spheres of influence, setting two cosmic poems by Tim Togeas and Sara Dailey about the astronomical forces that we find within each of us.

The centerpiece of EXCELSIS will be To touch the sky by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Kevin Puts. This nine-movement compendium of celestial feminine poetry includes texts by Sappho, Mirabai, Hildegard of Bingen, Amy Lowell, Emily Brontë, Edna St Vincent Millay, Christina Rossetti, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and Marie Howe. As a prelude to this cycle, the group will also perform If I were a swan, Puts’ elegant rendering of a poem by Fleda Brown.

“I love the music in this project,” says Chris Lewis, who has been singing with The Esoterics since 2010, “This concert is a great mix of gorgeous harmony, along with flashes of craziness. I’m digging it!”

Now in its twenty-fourth season, The Esoterics, Seattle’s most innovative chorus has drawn international praise for performing rarely-heard compositions of contemporary music for unaccompanied voices, for infusing elements of the literary, theatrical, and visual arts into the typical concert experience, and for performing settings of poetry, philosophy, and spiritual writings from around the world.

We hope that you can join us for this celestial concert series!

The Esoterics will offer three performances of EXCELSIS:

2 December 2017 | 800pm | Holy Rosary Catholic Church | 4142 42nd Avenue SW | West Seattle
1 December 2017 | 800pm | St Stephen’s Episcopal Church | 4805 NE 45th Street | Seattle
3 December 2017 | 700pm | Christ Episcopal Church | 310 North K Street | Tacoma

General admission ticket prices are $25 at the door ($22 in advance). Discounted admission ticket prices are $18 at the door ($15 in advance) for students, seniors, the un(der)employed, and the differently-abled. Active singers in other choral groups may also attend for $15.

Advance tickets are available online through BrownPaperTickets.

Twelfth Night Productions’ ‘It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show’ @ Kenyon Hall
Dec 8 @ 7:30 pm

Twelfth Night Productions (TNP) is excited to announce the return of “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Show”, playing this December at Kenyon Hall. Based the classic 1946 Frank Capra film, playwright Joe Landry’s take on “It’s a Wonderful Life,” comes to life as a live 1940s radio broadcast as the ensemble of characters bring the town of Bedford Falls to the stage. You will feel the magic as we return to the fateful Christmas Eve when George Bailey contemplates ending his life before he realizes the difference he makes in the lives of others. “No man is a failure who has friends.”

“If you close your eyes during this production you won’t miss a beat because all of the components – the sound effects, the organ, the commercials, and the Mistletones – work together successfully to recreate the live radio experience of the 1940’s and 50’s.” Drama in the Hood.

This live radio show will be performed at historic Kenyon Hall, one of West Seattle’s favorite venues, December 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 pm,
and December 10 and 17 at 3 pm.
Bring the family and make this a holiday tradition! Tickets are available online at Brown PaperTickets, and at Kenyon Hall, 7904 35th Ave. SW, Seattle WA, an hour before the show on performance days. Prices are $20 for adults and $18 for students & seniors.

NOVEMBER 2017 INFO:

As late autumn gathers its storms and people gather to give thanks, WordsWest Literary Series welcomes poet Sharon Bryan and author Gretchen Schrafft for “Gathering,” an evening of wit and investigation, a close look at how we are coming of age at every age. The event will also feature a bake sale, including apple pie, with 100% of the proceeds going to the West Seattle Food Bank. WordsWest Literary Series is grateful for grant funding from Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and Poets & Writers, Inc. that allows us to pay our writers for their time and talent.

Sharon Bryan’s most recent books are Sharp Stars and Flying Blind. She received two NEA awards for her work, and a Governor’s Award and Artist Trust grant from the State of Washington. She is on the faculty of the Lesley low-residency MFA in Creative Writing in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Gretchen Schrafft is a fiction writer, educator, and freelance journalist. Her fiction and reportage have appeared in Carve, Hobart, Joyland, The Rumpus, The Huffington Post, and San Francisco magazine, among other places. WordsWest Literary Series: NOVEMBER 2017 @ C & P Coffee Company
Jan 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

She teaches creative writing at Seattle University, and is working on a short story collection and a novel.

Every third Wednesday, 7pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to craft discussions and guided writing explorations for every experience level. Each month a community member from a local, independent business shares his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project. On November 15th, we welcome a favorite poem from representatives of the West Seattle Food Bank.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw, and this season’s intern/co-curator is Joannie Stangeland. Join us on FaceBook at https://www.facebook.com/WordsWestLiterary

WordsWest Literary Series: NOVEMBER 2017 @ C & P Coffee Company
Apr 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Jul 18 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Oct 17 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Jan 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
