Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Jun 29 all-day

(Note:  Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Let’s work together to gradually transform and maintain Westcrest Park and make it a great public space for everyone to enjoy. Let us know of any questions, hope to see you out there!

WEAR: Wear closed-toed shoes, long sleeves, long pants, and hat. Dress for the weather.
BRING: Bring water and also lunch if you think you are going to get hungry. DIRT Corps will provide coffee and light refreshments.

West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails guided hikes
Aug 4 @ 10:00 am

More info to come about June and beyond – save the dates!

Saturday, May 5 is the first of a series of hikes on the first Saturdays of each month, guided by members of the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails Group, each with a theme. Steve Richmond, an ecological restoration practitioner and owner of Garden Cycles, will lead a Nature Walk focusing on plant identification. Walkers will view recent “gap-thinning” and re-planting in the greenbelt. The three-mile walk will be slower than hiking, stopping for notable plants. It will begin at 10 a.m. at the 14th Ave. SW and SW Holly St. trailhead and loop back through the Chinese Garden at South Seattle College. For more information, see wdgtrails.wordpress.com.

Revitalize Westcrest Park with DIRT Corps
Aug 25 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Westcrest Park Forest Restoration Work Party – 8th Ave

Join DIRT Corps in revitalizing Westcrest Park. We are working on the parcel of land next to 8th Ave, and it is overgrown with Himalayan blackberries! It’s up to us and our volunteers to bring it under control!

The beginning of this volunteer event will include a brief weed ID. Combine knowledge with action as we work to clear this beautiful space of harmful species that overtakes the area. Many of you might already have this experience in your own backyard!

MEET: Meet next to the p-patch gardens.
PARK: Park in the south parking lot of Westcrest Park, entrance is off SW Henderson St.

Nov 3 @ 9:00 am – 12:00 pm

West Seattle’s Lincoln Park, contains 80 acres of stunning, mature forest. As with most city forests, it’s been invaded by ivy, holly, etc. Help us restore and maintain this urban jewel! This is a great event for families and organizations looking to make a real contribution to the environment. You’re likely to get dirty, but we promise you a good work out and good karma! Meet at 9:00 am at the north parking lot kiosk (Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Rose St). Dress for weather, long sleeves/pants year around and sturdy shoes or boots.
