Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Apr 16 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 18 @ 7:30 pm

ArtsWest will produce the 2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning play ENGLISH by Sanaz Toossi. This co-production with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble will be directed by Seda co-founder Naghmeh Samini. The cast features Vahishta Vafadari, Newsha Farahani, Janet Hayatshahi, Shereen Khatibloo, and Emon Elboudwarej. ENGLISH performs at ArtsWest from April 4 through April 28, 2024.

Two words set in motion award-winning playwright Sanaz Toossi’s intricate and profound New York debut: “English Only.” This is the mantra that rules one classroom in Iran, where four adult students are preparing for the TOEFL — the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Chasing fluency through a maze of word games, listening exercises, and show-and-tell sessions, they hope that one day, English will make them whole. But it might be splitting them each in half.

ArtsWest is thrilled to be co-producing ENGLISH with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble. Seda’s co-founders, Parmida Ziaei and Naghmeh Samini are both key members of ENGLISH’s Creative Team. Ziaei, who has served as Scenic Designer on past ArtsWest productions of ALMA and AN ENDLESS SHIFT, will be Scenic and Costume Designer for the upcoming production. Director Naghmeh Samini is joining ArtsWest for the first time. A prominent, award-winning playwright and screenwriter in Iran, Samini celebrated two successful runs in Seattle as the director and playwright of The Forgotten History of Mastaneh. In a recent interview with American Theatre Magazine, Samini reflected on ENGLISH’s ability to connect with audiences. Rather than focusing on the macro, like politics or history, ENGLISH focuses on the micro – five complex characters bursting with life, humor, and dreams for their future that immediately connect with audiences and draw them in. In the article, Samini shares, “What I like about this play is that it doesn’t try to show Iranian women as superheroes. It just shows us as real people with strengths and weaknesses.”

ArtsWest will present English, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 19 @ 7:30 pm

WHITE CENTER SPRING CLEAN
Saturday, April 20 and Saturday, April 27

White Center needs Our Help!!

The White Center Community Development Association (CDA) is organizing its 21st annual Refresh/ Spring Clean. If you love White Center, then volunteer to help us clean it up. Volunteers who give three hours working to clean up White Center will get the latest version of the famous “I Love White Center” T-shirt.

Volunteers have two Saturdays to choose from; April 20 and April 27.

Saturday, April 20, 2024 (Meet at 9 am at 98th and 15th)

To honor our wonderful Cambodian/American neighbors, who will be celebrating the Cambodian New Year the next weekend (Saturday, April 27), on April 20 we will focus on covering graffiti and cleaning up the downtown area around SW 98th between 17th and 14th, where the Cambodian New Year celebration will be.

We need crews to help cover graffiti, touch up murals, paint the front of buildings, pick up trash, and clean the windows of local businesses. Our goal is to make the area beautiful again for the Cambodian New Year celebration that occurs the following weekend. We will provide paint, brushes, and equipment to sweep and clean windows.

We also need crews to go to the four “Welcome to White Center” signs that each say “Welcome” in 10 languages, to clean them up, add flowers and bark around each sign, paint the brick foundations and poles if needed, and rake the areas surrounding each sign. These signs are located at Roxbury/18th , Roxbury/10th, SW 108th/4th, and Delridge/18th. For these crews, bring brooms and gloves, we will provide flowers, bark, paint, sign cleaner, and bags for trash.

Saturday, April 27, 2024 (Meet at 9 am at the Saars Parking lot)

We will continue removing graffiti in areas around White Center and support Evergreen students to help us touch of their previous great art on the north side of Saars market and on both sides of SE 108th between 16th and 17th. We will also have crews walking throughout White Center covering graffiti and picking up trash. After our clean up effort, we can all go celebrate the Cambodian New Year!!

Sign up by email or text. Tell us your group size, and shirt sizes. We can make White Center beautiful again, if you help us.

Plunge for Patterson at Alki Beach with Vedders & Friends
Apr 21 @ 10:00 am

Longtime West Seattleites Eddie & Jill Vedder co-founded EB Research Partnership (EBRP) in 2010 along with a dedicated group of parents set out to save their children’s lives. Their community will be rallying around Team Vedder by plunging into the cold waters of Puget Sound off Alki Beach on Sunday, April 21st at 10 am as part of a national campaign to raise money to treat and cure Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a family of painful and life-threatening rare genetic disorders that affect the body’s largest organ: the skin.

The Vedders serve as global fundraisers and ambassadors sharing the mission of curing and treating EB with the world. EBRP is now the largest global nonprofit funding research to discover treatments and cures for EB, and Jill serves as the Board’s chairperson. The organization has raised more than $60 million, funded 140 research projects, increased clinical trials from 2 to now more than 40, and helped lead to the first two ever FDA-approved treatments for EB last year.

The Plunge for Elodie is named after 7-year-old Elodie Kubik, who lives with a severe form of EB. The event began in 2018 in Wellesley, Massachusetts, organized by friends of Elodie’s mother, and has now grown into an annual global fundraising and awareness-raising initiative.

This year, Team Vedder will be plunging Alki Beach with a local EB patient, Patterson, a young boy who, like Elodie, suffers from a severe form of EB. Patterson endures daily bandage changes that can be grueling and take time away from other activities. EB is challenging, as it affects so much more than just his skin. It is a constant battle, both physically and emotionally, as he navigates through pain, itch, inflammation, and wound care. But amidst the challenges, there is a powerful force that emerges – strength and resilience.

“We are inspired by the courage that those with EB, like Patterson and Elodie, show every single day to fight alongside them. Our mission is to cure EB by 2030 and events like the Plunge help us raise the awareness and dollars to achieve it. We have made tremendous progress towards our goal of delivering treatments and a cure; however, we will not stop until there is a cure for every patient and our model can lead the way for all those battling rare diseases,” said EBRP Chairwoman Jill Vedder.

4 Ways to Support Team Vedder’s #PlungeForElodie This Year

1. Donate to Team Vedder: Hit the “Donate” Button to give. Every dollar raised through the Plunge supports EBRP’s mission to treat and cure EB.

2. Fundraise in Your Community: If you want to go bigger and make your own fundraising page under The Vedder Team, click “Join Team” and follow the prompts to create an account. (All ofyour efforts will be tallied up on the “Team Vedder” page.)* We have good prizes for top fundraisers!

3. Join Vedders & Friends in person at Alki Beach near the bathhouse at 10 am on Sunday, April 21 to take the plunge with us by making a minimum donation of $25 here *AND* completing this waiver online prior to the event.

4. If you can’t join us in-person, film yourself taking a virtual plunge in a cold-body-of-water, mound of snow, or tub filled with ice and tag @ebresearch and @jill.vedder #PlungeForElodie on April 21st so we can see your amazing plunge!

Donating to EBRP not only supports families fighting EB everywhere, but also has the potential to impact thousands of other rare diseases.

Thanks to the long-standing support of brave EB Warriors, resilient EB families, brilliant medical experts and generous donors, EBRP has been able to raise over $60M for critical EB research, fund 140+ innovative projects, and accelerator the first two FDA approved treatments for EB and transform the clinical trial landscape by 20x since 2010.

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs … so please check our website for updates.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Please note! If you can’t make it to the monthly drive, you can leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance. IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.

Deepest gratitude to our community for your generous support of our neighbors in need.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 21 @ 3:00 pm

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Apr 23 @ 5:30 am

Apr 25 @ 7:30 pm
