— To Register, email officemgr@admiralchurch.org-

This workshop series is a basic primer on current theory about gender (distinct from sex assignment and
sexual orientation) and how it relates to everyone, whether trans*, gender fluid, cis-gender, non-binary, etc.

We will focus on our own experiences of identifying with our gender, of having our gender expression
policed by others (and ourselves), and the church’s role in supporting human freedom around gender
identity and expression. By the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of
what it means to be an ally and co-conspirator with trans* and gender non-conforming folx, and the
gifts that progressive Christian theology can bring to this work.

Packed with the music that made her both a legend – “What a Little Moonlight Can Do”, “God Bless the Child” – and a cultural flashpoint – “Strange Fruit” – Lady Day tells an intimate story of a complex woman through reminisces, confessions, and unforgettable music.

Jun 29 all-day

(Note:  Beach Naturalist events occur between 10 am and 4 pm. Each day /event time varies with the tide and lasts about 2 hours. Low tide usually falls in the middle of the hours listed.)

Join trained volunteers from Seattle Aquarium’s Beach Naturalist Program for a free guided exploration at very low tide (note the dates and specific times for each day below) No reservations necessary.

Dress for the windy weather and wear shoes that can get wet and handle very slippery surfaces. This program designed for adults and 3 and older. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Find events at Lincoln Park (beach) and South Alki/Constellation Park.

Stroll along almost any Seattle beach during low tide on a summer weekend and you’ll see that the shore is alive!

Not only will you witness Puget Sound’s multitude of marine plants and animals, you’ll also see beach naturalists: advocates for these living wonders sharing their knowledge with beachgoers.
Beach naturalists are local citizens who care about Puget Sound beaches and want to help protect them. More than 100 have volunteered to help people learn about and enjoy area shorelines. Beach naturalists know their beaches: they can help you enjoy the habitat without harming it; tell you what sea stars eat; explain why barnacles stand on their heads; describe how moon snails lay their eggs; and so much more. “The enthusiasm and excitement of our beach naturalists transfers directly to the public—it’s a wonderful, infectious thing!” beams Janice Mathisen, community outreach coordinator at the Seattle Aquarium. “To be able to meet a family and educate them on what a treasure we have here in Puget Sound is amazing.”

Mahonia Project Work Party @ South Seattle College, from 10 am to noon on the last Saturday of the month through winter, including Thanksgiving weekend.

The South Seattle College is hosting an exciting new horticulture project and we welcome plant lovers from West Seattle and beyond to join Team Mahonia! You may be familiar with ‘Oregon Grape’, which is a a part of the genus Mahonia. We are researching over 90 cultivars – many from other regions – to find the best ones for the Pacific Northwest.

Through the Winter, monthly maintenance work parties are set for Last Saturdays (10 am-noon). We will also provide snacks, coffee and tea, and in November there will be an optional lunch out with the crew (everyone pays their own way, and location TBD).

This is a unique opportunity to participate in ‘citizen science’: not only will you support a one-of-kind project, but you get to witness a wide variety of features as the plants evolve and grow up.

About the Speaker

Stephen Rink is a Whale Trail volunteer who has been fascinated with whales since the age of 5. He has maintained an affinity for the ocean, and continues to travel the world to see different marine life and photograph them along the way. Stephen moved to Seattle in 2017 to be closer to killer whales and participate in recovery efforts. He hopes to continue to travel as a photographer and eventually photograph whales aboard expedition vessels in Antarctica.

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail is a series of sites to view orcas and other marine mammals from shore. Our mission is to inspire appreciation and stewardship of whales and our marine environment.

Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 50 million people each year. The Whale Trail is currently adding new sites along the North American west coast, from California to British Columbia.

The Whale Trail is led by a core team of partners including NOAA Fisheries, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Seattle Aquarium, the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, the Whale Museum. Donna Sandstrom is the Founder and Executive Director. Many members of the team first met on the successful effort to return Springer, the orphaned orca, to her pod.

The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, registered in Washington State. Join us!

Litter League volunteer community cleanups @ Various
Jul 8 @ 9:30 am – 11:30 am

I hope you will join us this summer in keeping our local West Seattle Morgan Junction clean. To make it easy for everyone to help out, we have scheduled in advance for five clean up mornings to pick up litter!

The dates are all on Sunday mornings from 9:30 – 11:00:

May 27
July 8
August 5
Sept 2
Oct 7

Yes, May 27 and Sept. 2 fall during holiday weekends, but we know that many people will be in town and able to come!

We will meet by the ATM near the Shell station and I will have vests, litter picker-uppers, buckets and bags for everyone. Please bring and wear your gardening gloves!

I will do a brief safety talk at 9:30 – mainly showing the kids what a needle looks like and to alert me if they find one, don’t pick it up.

This is a wonderful opportunity for family volunteering, meaningful for small kids and something they can really help with! So bring your whole family. Or come alone or with a friend. Dogs are welcome if well-behaved and on-leash and you can do the outer parts of MJ to get you and your pup some exercise. The families with young kids focus on the main intersection areas.

This summer, I am arranging with Seattle Light to let me keep the equipment all summer, so it is also available if you want to tackle an area in your immediate neighborhood around MJ (or if anyone wants to clean up along 35th from the Library to Trenton, that area really needs some help). Just let me know!

You can just drop in or you can RSVP, which is helpful to me in terms of how many people to expect and to ensure I have enough support equipment.

Rainy days don’t cancel unless it’s a downpour.

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Jul 11 all-day

Jeff Ferguson’s Triangular Jazztet performs @ Whisky West
Jul 11 @ 7:00 pm

Whisky West has extended its bi-weekly presentation of Jeff Ferguson’s Triangular Jazztet. The band will continue to feature West Seattle guest players such as local blues stalwart Jeff Mason, iconoclastic/world-traveling/multi-instrumentalist, Amy Denio , and the always melodic guitarist, Bruce Barnard. Half of the band lives in West Seattle and the hope is to establish an ongoing venue for local players who deserve to be heard in their own neighborhood.

The Triangular Jazztet features Brian Flanagan on guitar, Orrin Sand on keyboard, Michael Grimes on bass, and Jeff Ferguson on drums. These seasoned musicians have performed a lively mix of original compositions, all-American standards, and popular favorites hundreds of times to appreciative Seattle audiences over the last seven years. Jazz lives in West Seattle!

Explore the beach at low tide with Beach Naturalists @ Lincoln Park (beach) & Alki south beach
Jul 15 all-day
