Seattle Wear Orange Event
Jun 2 all-day

Skylines and key buildings nationwide will begin turning orange on June 1 – the start of Gun Violence Awareness Month – including the Empire State Building in New York, Crain Communications Building in Chicago, and Morrison Bridge in Portland.

Washington State mayors including Mayor Murray (Seattle), Mayor Gregerson (Mukilteo), Mayor Leavitt (Vancouver) joined the more than 100 mayors nationwide participating in the Wear Orange campaign this year.

In 2013, a small group of teens at a South Side Chicago high school asked their classmates to honor the life of their murdered friend Hadiya Pendleton by wearing orange – the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others and a color that reflects the
value of human life. They inspired the Wear Orange campaign (wearorange.org), a coalition of more than 200 non-profits, cultural influencers and elected officials working to reduce gun violence in America.

Spearheaded by Everytown for Gun Safety, the campaign asks Americans who believe we can do more to save lives from gun violence to do one simple thing on June 2, National Gun Violence Awareness Day: Wear Orange. Those who wear orange pledge to honor the lives of Americans stolen by gun violence, to help keep firearms out of dangerous hands and to protect our children from gun violence. Wear Orange has already reached more than 220 million people worldwide and is fast becoming the symbol of the gun violence prevention movement.

On Saturday, June 4th, West Seattle Meaningful Movies presents “Love is a Verb” a film about a worldwide social movement of Sufi-inspired muslims.

Among the people you’ll meet in the movie are teachers who crawled through a tunnel to open a school in Sarajevo during the war, a Sufi conductor of an orchestra of children whose parents were once at war with each other, Turkish doctors in Somalia who are putting their lives at risk in a place other relief organizations have deemed too dangerous.

“This movement is not about individual enlightenment; [it] is about making the world a better place. But while making the world a betterplace . . . this altruism is also transformative.” (Marcia Hermansen, Director of Islamic World Studies, Loyola University of Chicago)

Free presentation: Secrets to a Healthy Pregnancy and Early Parenthood @ Adkins Chiropractic Clinic
Jun 6 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm

Secrets to a Healthy Pregnancy and Early Parenthood
This presentation covers vital information that every expectant parent and caregiver should know about the physical demands of pregnancy and early childhood. Pregnancy and raising young children can be one of the most special times in a person’s life but the incredible amount of dependence that a baby or young child has on their parent or caregiver can also be an incredible drain both physically and emotionally.

Over 3.93 million women in the U.S gave birth last year and between 50 to 70% reported back pain. That means 1.9 to 2.17 million pregnant women in the U.S. are experiencing back pain at any given time. Leading authorities also rate fatigue as one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy.

In this lecture attendees will learn why back pain and fatigue are so prevalent among pregnant women and what can be done about it.They will also learn various strategies to reduce the physical demands and strain that raising a young child can have on a parent or caregiver and as a result enabling them to be happier, healthier and ultimately better parents.

Please call to reserve a spot. 206-258-4886

Refreshments will be served.

South Lander Street Bridge project open house @ Metropolist
Jun 8 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

SDOT has an open house coming up for what it’s now calling the South Lander Street Bridge project. While the project is in SODO, the former “Lander Street Overpass” proposal has long been of interest to West Seattleites traveling on surface streets to/from there, and has been on the WSTC’s priority list for almost two years; it was shelved almost a decade ago, then revived with partial funding in last year’s voter-approved Move Seattle levy. It will go over the railroad tracks on Lander between 1st and 4th (see the map above; click it for a full-size PDF).

The city’s current timeline is for completing design next year (saying the design from a decade ago is outdated), then building the overpass from “early 2018-early 2020.” As the city infopage notes, funding is not finalized – while local and state dollars are available, they’re awaiting word on a federal grant.

The open house is set for 4-6 pm Wednesday, June 8th, at Metropolist in SODO, 2931 1st Ave. South. An “online open house” goes live two days before that.

In the 35 years since arriving in the NW, he has served as the senior pastor of West Side Presbyterian Church. A recent tally showed he had officiated 180 wedding ceremonies, led 256 memorial services, and baptized more than 430 children and adults. He has also been active in renewal ministries with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has served the church both locally and nationally in promoting and equipping churches for evangelism.

Born November 25, 1945, Paul is the son of a banker and one of six children. He grew up in a small ranching town in Western South Dakota near Badlands National Park. He graduated with honors from Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, before marrying his wife, Carreen Armerding and earning an MDiv from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in Boston, MA.

For the first ten years of his ministry, Dr. Smith served as Assistant Pastor and then Senior Pastor of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in McKeesport, PA.

He completed his Doctorate of Ministry from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School shortly after arriving in Seattle. And in the years since, he’s written four books: Jesus, Meet him again for the First Time; Close Encounters: Knowing the Savior; Enjoying God Forever; God’s Plan for our Good. He has also traveled extensively throughout Israel and Jordan and has co-led a half-dozen tours, in Israel, Jordan, Egypt, Turkey, and Greece.

Paul and his wife, Carreen are the parents of four children: Lucian, Taleigh, Lindsay, and Miriam, and grandparents of seven.

Following retirement, and a long-awaited trip to Africa, the Smiths will return to Seattle, where Paul plans to continue his writing and looks forward to spending more time with his family and grandchildren.

We do it all wrong with flattering sound systems, songs that you actually want to sing but can’t find anywhere, and magical song slips that self destruct if “grease megamix” is written on them.”

At C & P Coffee Company (WSB sponsor):

Don’t miss WordsWest’s Year 2 Finale! Two exciting new authors will take the stage to remind us how the borders between poetry and prose are more porous than we think. On June 15th, 2016, WordsWest Literary Series presents award-winning poet Michael Schmeltzer and best selling novelist Christopher Robinson as they demonstrate the mysterious connections between literary genres in “The Poetry in Prose and the Prose in Poetry.” This evening is partially funded by Seattle’s Office of Arts & Culture and Poets & Writers, Inc.

Christopher Robinson is the co-author, with Gavin Kovite, of War of the Encyclopaedists
(Scribner, May 2015), a novel Michiko Kakutani calls “Captivating…by turns funny and sad and elegiac.” He is a recipient of fellowships from the MacDowell Colony, Yaddo, the Millay Colony, Bread Loaf, and the Djerassi Resident Artist program. He has been a finalist for numerous prizes, including the Ruth Lilly Fellowship and the Yale Younger Poets Prize. He earned his MA in poetry from Boston University and his MFA from Hunter College.

Michael Schmeltzer is the author of Elegy/Elk River, winner of the Floating Bridge Press Chapbook Award, and Blood Song, his debut full-length collection from Two Sylvias Press. Baby Ketten Karaoke on Tuesday nights starts at 9 pm at Skylark Café & Club. Details on Baby Ketten and songlists here. Free, ages 21+.

“I know, I know, karaoke is supposed to kinda suck. It is traditionally composed of bad sound, limited song choices, and frat boy margaritaville sing-alongs. We do it all wrong with flattering sound systems, songs that you actually want to sing but can’t find anywhere, and magical song slips that self destruct if “grease megamix” is written on them.”
