Feb 8 @ 6:00 pm

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8TH: WORDS, WRITERS, SOUTHWEST STORIES PRESENTS:

Nancy Koppleman
The Oldest Hatred: Coming to Terms with Antisemitism

In 2021, 82 percent of American Jews said antisemitism had risen over the last five years, while only 44 percent of the general public believed that to be the case. How can we account for this striking difference?

Antisemitism is sometimes called “the oldest hatred,” and this talk will show how religious and racial prejudice shaped Jewish experience over millennia and came to unite diverse Jewish people around the world. Topics will include the origins of Jewish stereotypes, how antisemitism intersects with white nationalism, and the difference between critiques of the Israeli government and discrimination against Jews. Attendees will gain new knowledge and understanding about antisemitism along with strategies to address it.

Nancy Koppelman (she/her) has been a professor of American studies and humanities at The Evergreen State College for 28 years, where she currently leads the Evergreen Jewish Studies Project. She holds an M.A. in history from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. in American studies from Emory University. Koppelman lives in Olympia.

This event will be held virtually, via Zoom on February 8, 2024, at 6 pm. A link to join this event will be emailed to registered participants on the day of the event.

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 8 @ 7:30 pm

ArtsWest will produce Born with Teeth as the third production in their 2023-2024 Season. Written by Liz Duffy Adams and directed by Artistic Director Mathew Wright, this two-hander features Michael Monicatti (Seattle Rep’s Teenage Dick) as Christopher Marlowe and Ricky Spaulding (Village Theatre’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood) as William Shakespeare. Born with Teeth performs at ArtsWest from February 1 through February 25. Tickets are available online at artswest.org or by phone at (206) 938.0963.

An aging authoritarian ruler, a violent police state and a restless, polarized people seething with paranoia: It’s a dangerous time for poets. Two of them — the great Christopher Marlowe and the up-and-comer William Shakespeare — meet in the back room of a pub to collaborate on a history play cycle, navigate the perils of art under a totalitarian regime and flirt like young men with everything to lose. One of them may well be the death of the other in this biting comedy about ambition, ego, and history.

Following ArtsWest’s mission to produce work that uses live theatre as a powerful agent of change, the company has a history of examining classic texts and classic characters through contemporary lenses. Their past productions of Death of a Salesman, Ghosts, and Saint Joan took these canonical works and made them relevant and accessible to today’s audiences. While Born with Teeth is a contemporary play, it shares the spirit of looking at history from a new perspective. “Liz Duffy Adams has written an extraordinary play, dazzling in its language and deeply human in its heart,” says director Mathew Wright. “Ricky and Michael are two of Seattle’s most exciting actors, and watching them have it out with each other as these two mytho-historical figures is nothing short of thrilling. The play is full of brilliant wordplay, intrigue, sharp humor and deeply moving questions about the need for human connection.”

ArtsWest will present Born with Teeth, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

Maiden to Mother: A Matrescence Mini Retreat at Limber Yoga
Feb 10 @ 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Maiden to Mother: A Matrescence Mini Retreat at Limber Yoga

The process of transitioning from woman, or “maiden,” to mother, what anthropologists call “matrescence,” can feel like a metamorphosis. Like adolescence, it is a time of huge physical shifts in your body and mind. It is a time of questioning yourself, and maybe even questioning everything.
This tender time can be emotionally, physically, and spiritually challenging. Just like it takes a village to raise a baby, it takes a village to honor and support a new mother through this transition. Yet sadly, in our Western culture where there are few villages, we are often left to cross this threshold alone.

~Are you a mother who is juggling life with young kids?

~Do you feel like you are just now coming up for air after the complex newborn months?

~Are you yearning to get reoriented to the woman you are now?

~Do you want to connect with other mothers who understand firsthand?

~Are you craving an afternoon that’s just for you?

Join us for a restorative and contemplative mini-retreat honoring matrescence and the transformative power of stepping into motherhood. The afternoon will be spent in ritual and community and will include meditation, gentle movement, journaling and creative expression, sharing time, and restorative yoga.

Together, we will begin to explore, honor, and process the changes we’ve experienced since becoming mothers. We will seek to hold space for one another’s stories and our unique reclaiming of the sacred in motherhood.

No yoga or meditation experience is required.

Where: Limber Yoga, 7901 35th Ave SW
When: Saturday, February 10, 1-4 pm
Cost: $80 (sliding scale available upon request)

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 10 @ 7:30 pm

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Feb 13 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 15 @ 7:30 pm

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 17 @ 7:30 pm
