‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 18 @ 3:00 pm

ArtsWest will produce Born with Teeth as the third production in their 2023-2024 Season. Written by Liz Duffy Adams and directed by Artistic Director Mathew Wright, this two-hander features Michael Monicatti (Seattle Rep’s Teenage Dick) as Christopher Marlowe and Ricky Spaulding (Village Theatre’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood) as William Shakespeare. Born with Teeth performs at ArtsWest from February 1 through February 25. Tickets are available online at artswest.org or by phone at (206) 938.0963.

An aging authoritarian ruler, a violent police state and a restless, polarized people seething with paranoia: It’s a dangerous time for poets. Two of them — the great Christopher Marlowe and the up-and-comer William Shakespeare — meet in the back room of a pub to collaborate on a history play cycle, navigate the perils of art under a totalitarian regime and flirt like young men with everything to lose. One of them may well be the death of the other in this biting comedy about ambition, ego, and history.

Following ArtsWest’s mission to produce work that uses live theatre as a powerful agent of change, the company has a history of examining classic texts and classic characters through contemporary lenses. Their past productions of Death of a Salesman, Ghosts, and Saint Joan took these canonical works and made them relevant and accessible to today’s audiences. While Born with Teeth is a contemporary play, it shares the spirit of looking at history from a new perspective. “Liz Duffy Adams has written an extraordinary play, dazzling in its language and deeply human in its heart,” says director Mathew Wright. “Ricky and Michael are two of Seattle’s most exciting actors, and watching them have it out with each other as these two mytho-historical figures is nothing short of thrilling. The play is full of brilliant wordplay, intrigue, sharp humor and deeply moving questions about the need for human connection.”

ArtsWest will present Born with Teeth, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Feb 20 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 22 @ 7:30 pm

‘Born With Teeth’ at ArtsWest
Feb 23 @ 7:30 pm

Charles Peterson book signing at Easy Street Records
Feb 24 @ 7:00 pm

Charles Peterson was present with his camera as a genre took form; his images have become synonymous with the sounds, styles, movement and attitude known as Grunge.

During a span of 5 years, Charles Peterson looked at thousands of frames, pondering what had initially drawn him to Nirvana, the answer? Their music…

This book expands beyond Peterson’s iconic images of the band seen repeatedly over the last thirty years to highlight gems never before published.

A selection of photos & their carefully constructed sequence mash up venues and years, suffering and the sublime, a visual experience that one cannot help but also feel, and hear.

Don’t miss out on this event.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Feb 27 @ 5:30 am

Duke’s Seafood reopens on Alki with chowder giveaway
Feb 28 – Mar 5 all-day

Duke’s Seafood’s West Seattle restaurant is set to re-open on Wednesday, February 28. The location has been closed for about a month for repairs due to flooding from burst pipes during January’s freezing temps.

To celebrate, Duke’s Seafood on Alki will offer One Free Bowl of Chowder to anyone who stops by during the first week of opening (Wednesday, February 28 – March 5). Again, the West Seattle location only.

After that, the restaurant plans to launch a new weekly “free special” for the entire month of March.

Owners Duke Moscrip and son John Moscrip made lemonade out of lemons by utilizing this temporary inconvenience as an opportunity to give the location a few updates. New flooring and carpet, of course, but also new lighting and décor, new paint, as well as kitchen upgrades. Alki has a fresh, new look!

HPAC’s February 2024 meeting @ online
Feb 28 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Early signs of spring are popping up everywhere, including signs from metro King County looking for input on dropping stops on the 125, 128 & 60 bus lines between Westwood Village and SW Holden, theoretically to speed up and make service more timely. Be sure to write to Metro at BusStopSW@kingcounty.gov to let them know what you think about the stops selected for closure. Comments have now been extended through March 14.

Metro will have a representative at our meeting and will be looking for Community thoughts on these proposed service reductions.

We will also be bringing you updates on the Sound Transit Delridge station planning process (and possibly new information on the south Delridge triangle area).

We are also asking for updates from public safety and outreach personnel on encampments on 1st Ave South at Myers Way and Delridge across from the police station. Feel free to bring any other public safety concerns.

And what about the Hum??? Is the famous Highland Park hum back? Let us know what you hear from your block.

Finally, big congratulations to the Highland Park Improvement Club for making it through the strenuous city Master Use Permit process and moving us one step closer to rebuilding the heart of our neighborhood!!
