Bake sale benefiting youth soccer club’s travel @ Arbor Heights Food Truck Night
Mar 4 @ 4:40 pm – 7:00 pm

Our team is Valencia CF (VFC) Academy Boys 2010/2011, based in Seattle directly partnered with Valencia CF, a club that competes in La Liga, the highest professional level in Spain. Each year, our Valencia CF Academy teams have the opportunity to travel to Valencia and work closely with the VCF Academy coaches for a week filled with high-intensity training, tests, friendlies, and team building. This is a unique opportunity that allows players to be trained and observed by high-level coaches. During our trip to Valencia, Spain, players also have a chance to grow their development and confidence, and the trip empowers them to be better players and people. Over the last 6 months, we have been raising money to build a need-based scholarship fund for a trip the team is taking to Spain in a few weeks.

We are hosting a Bake Sale table at the upcoming Arbor Heights Food Truck this coming Monday March 4th and would love to invite community members to support. This is our second time partnering with the food truck, the first was really successful and very fun for players – and we had loads of awesome treats for sale.

This training trip to Spain is a valuable and necessary stage in their growth as soccer players and people. We do not want any of our players to miss out, especially those faced with financial needs. It is our goal to provide full scholarships for those who need it and offset some expenses covered by families. The money we raise through this goes directly to travel needs which include:
Airfare & 9 nights in a hotel very close to our training facility (includes meals)
10 training sessions with the Valencia CF coaches & 1-2 friendly matches against local teams
Coordination and supervision by VCF staff for the entirety of the trip
Valencia CF training kits
Ground transportation by bus to and from hotel, training, and city events

If West Seattleites are not able to come out to get some baked treats from us on Monday, they can learn more by checking out our fundraising page linked here.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Mar 5 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.

This month’s meeting will begin with Sandy Hunt and Andrea O’Ferrall. They will share information and answer questions about Defenders of Highline Forest. Never heard of Highline Forest? Join us and learn!

Andrea and Sandy will be followed by John Taylor, director of King County’s Department of Local Services from its beginning in 2018 until last month. Local Services’ responsibilities include managing land use, issuing permits, enforcing code, and maintaining roads. The county’s news release about John’s transition to the Natural Resources and Parks department describes him as a “proven leader to reinforce King County’s reputation as a trusted environmental steward and manage one of the largest metropolitan natural resource agencies in the country.” We look forward to hearing what John sees in the future for our community and its interactions with these two important connections to our local government.

We have a lot to ask Detective Glen Brannon about from gunfire that hit Patrick’s Café and Bakery to a major drug bust that included 71,000 M-30 Fentanyl pills, 31 pounds of Methamphetamine and 1.12 pounds of heroin. Don’t miss this opportunity to share your concerns and thanks with Detective Brannon.

Fauntleroy Creek culvert info event
Mar 9 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

45th Ave SW Culvert Replacement Projec
t
Learn more about the project and join us for a Design Drop-in on Saturday, March 9 from 10 am – 1 pm!

The culvert for replacement is under 45th Ave SW, near SW Wildwood Pl. The future Fauntleroy Creek overlook area is on City-owned property on the west side of 45th Ave SW.

The design of the 45th Ave SW Culvert Replacement Project, which is part of the Fauntleroy Creek Culverts Replacement Program, is underway again after a hiatus. Want to learn about the latest design updates? Join members of the project team for a Design Drop-in on Saturday, March 9 any time from 10 am – 1 pm to learn about the culvert and share your thoughts on the future Fauntleroy Creek overlook space. The project information table will be at the intersection of SW Wildwood Pl and 45th Ave SW, in front of Wildwood Glen. We hope to see you there!

Can’t make it to the Design Drop-in? We still want to hear from you! You can share your feedback about the future overlook space through our survey March 4 – 22. The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete.

What is the 45th Ave SW Culvert Replacement Project?
SPU plans to replace the aging culvert under 45th Ave SW, near SW Wildwood Pl. The culvert is a structure that channels Fauntleroy Creek under the roadway. Replacing this culvert will restore fish passage, reduce the risk of culvert failure, improve resilience to anticipated climate change, and provide safer working conditions for crews.

In addition to replacing the culvert, SPU is planning to construct a small public space on City-owned property on the west side of 45th Ave SW that will overlook Fauntleroy Creek. The project team is currently seeking feedback on what amenities the community would like to see in this space. Please visit the project website to learn more and take the survey through March 22.

There are three culverts on Fauntleroy Creek: a lower culvert at Fauntleroy Way SW, a middle culvert at 45th Ave SW, and an upper culvert at California Ave SW. SPU is implementing a phased project to replace two of these culverts, those at 45th Ave SW and at California Ave SW. Due to the condition and age of the culverts, repairing them is not a viable strategy. The Fauntleroy Way culvert and associated fish ladder were built in the late 1990s and are not part of the Fauntleroy Creek Culverts Replacement Project. The 45th Ave SW culvert is the immediate focus of this project.

SPU continues to investigate creek, drainage, sediment, utility, or other infrastructure issues within the Fauntleroy Creek drainage basin that may be addressed through this or other projects.

Project Timeline
SPU is approaching the mid-design phase, also known as 60% design completion. The project team will continue to gather feedback from the community, permitting agencies, and other impacted parties to inform the project’s design. As the design moves forward, SPU will provide a more precise schedule. Community outreach will be ongoing throughout the project phases.

● Planning and Early Design: 2018 – 2023

● Mid-Design: 2023 – 2024

● Final Design: 2024 – 2025

● Construction: 2026 – 2027

Questions about the project? We want to hear from you!

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Mar 12 @ 5:30 am

Free playspace at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene

Essentially we are inviting Moms, Dads, caregivers to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am-12 pm to bring their little ones, and to have a place to play and connect with others in the cold and rainy seasons. Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.
