Mar 14 @ 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm

MARCH: WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH
“And It Has Pockets! The Battle for Women’s Clothing Equality”
Thursday, Mar. 14, 4:30-5:30 pm

Comparisons have shown that modern garments designed for women have about half the storage space of clothing
designed for men. From their invention, pockets in women’s fashion have represented independence—so much so that
in the 18th century, laws were enacted to strip women of their personal liberty by making the contents of their pockets
the property of their husband. The right to have pockets went hand-in-hand with the right to vote. And people today are
still speaking out about the inequality between men’s and women’s clothing based on this simple storage system. Join
theater teacher and costume designer Diane Johnston in this entertaining and educational presentation about fashion
history and the historical trends that find their way into our modern closets. Free to members and nonmembers, thanks
to sponsorship from Humanities Washington.bAdvance RSVP requested.

Words, Writers, Southwest Stories presents Wonderful, Weird, and Worrisome Objects in Washington State’s Museums @ online
Mar 14 @ 6:00 pm

THURSDAY, MARCH 14TH: WORDS, WRITERS, SOUTHWEST STORIES PRESENTS:

Harriet Baskas
Wonderful, Weird, and Worrisome Objects in Washington State’s Museums

Most museums display no more than 10 percent of their holdings, often citing “not enough space” as the reason. But there are also a wide range of cultural, philosophical, political, environmental, historic, and even superstitious reasons why museums keep some objects from public view.

In this talk, explore a wide range of hidden objects found in the back rooms of museums in our state and around the country. Examples include a Spokane institution that holds Bing Crosby’s toupées and a museum in Lynden that’s home to a 150-year-old pickle. Museum staff will be on hand to answer questions, participate in our discussions, and unbox a few hidden treasures.

Harriet Baskas (she/her) is the author of nine books, including 111 Places in Seattle That You Must Not Miss and Hidden Treasures: What Museums Can’t or Won’t Show You. She writes about airports, museums, travel, and a variety of other topics for outlets such as NBC News, The Points Guy, and her own site, StuckatTheAirport.com. She produced a radio series on hidden museum artifacts that aired on National Public Radio. Baskas has a master’s in communications from the University of Washington.

Baskas lives in Seattle.

This event will be held virtually, via Zoom on March 14, 2024, at 6pm. A link to join this event will be emailed to registered participants on the day of the event.

Northwest Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Music for the Soul’ concert @ Holy Rosary Catholic Church
Mar 16 @ 8:00 pm

In the beautiful surroundings of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in West Seattle, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra presents this season’s “Music for the Soul” concert on Saturday, March 16 at 8 pm. This season we focus on the themes of beauty, hope, and joy – featuring 5 different works that span much of the course of music history. We begin with Schubert’s beautifully introspective Symphony No. 8 and then continue with the exuberant Orchestral Suite No. 4 by Bach and Hungarian Dance No. 5 by Brahms. A world premiere by local composer Huntley Beyer, with its combination of beauty and quirky humor, adds another dimension to our “Music for the Soul” theme, and once again we partner with Key to Change and feature violin soloist Eden Pawlos.

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs … so please check our website for updates.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Please note! If you can’t make it to the monthly drive, you can leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance. IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.

Deepest gratitude to our community for your generous support of our neighbors in need.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Mar 19 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Meet the Winemakers at Sebastiano’s
Mar 21 @ 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The good season is here (hopefully to stay) and we are going to be hosting a series of wine-tasting events with domestic and international winemakers who will be telling their stories and pouring their wines.

We start this week with Ramon Perera from Celler Pardas, who will be at Sebastiano’s n=Natural Wines pouring five of his wines onThursday 21st from 5-7 pm.

Next are Jim and Jenny of Fossil & Fawn, an Oregon-based natural winery. They will be pouring their wines on Saturday 23rd, from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Tastings are free of charge.

Here’s some info on the winemakers and their stories:

Ramon Parera and Jordi Anan of Celler Pardas have become longtime fixtures of Catalonia’s low-intervention wine scene. In 1996, they discovered an abandoned estate 250m above sea level in the Penedés region of Catalonia. Affected by the Spanish Civil war, the Can Comas estate was made up of 60 hectares of unkempt Mediterranean forest and pasture surrounding a run-down medieval farmhouse. They discovered a gem – an ancient cellar that had survived the dregs of war. The two painstakingly restored the cellar and the building, carefully planting new vineyards and pioneering low-intervention winemaking in their region.

Ramon and Jordi have fought to bring back ancient varieties indigenous to the area like Sumoll, Xarel.lo and Malvasia Sitges. As anyone who’s tasted Celler Pardas wine knows, their efforts have definitely paid off.

Fossil & Fawn started out as a completely reasonable idea in the late summer of 2011. Jenny and Jim began with the notion of making a small amount of wine from their family vineyard as a single-site bottling, simply because no one else had done so before. The plan was to have a nice example to show to potential buyers of the Pinot noir and Pinot gris grown there. Somewhere along the line they figured that for all the effort, they might as well make it an official wine label. Thus, Fossil & Fawn was born proper as a wine label.

Jim and Jenny aren’t too interested in bold manifestos or style declarations – their goal is to make wines they like. They’ve found that the kind of wines they like are executed with a natural approach that allows the vineyard to do the talking. That means instead of buying yeast, they culture it from the vineyard itself, with no other additives or enzymes. It also means as-little-as-necessary sulfur additions and aging all of their wines in barrels, with very little new oak.

Artist bio here:

GARRISON COVERDALE

I was an Art student at Washington State University when I got hooked on ceramics.
We used a fairly traditional approach to RAKU including a traditional clay body and a very
inefficient wood-burning kiln that took hours to reach the relatively low temperature for RAKU ware.
Over the years my technique has evolved considerably. Now, my hand-built and wheel thrown work is fired in an electric kiln. I use a clay body that is more porcelain-like instead of the traditional highly grogged RAKU clay. This gives my work a purity of color and a smoothness that I desire. I have formulated a “crackle” glaze similar to Paul Soldner’s well-known recipe, that I use on the body of my pieces. The bright colors that I use as accent are low-fire commercial glazes. Because of the more fragile clay body, my work will not withstand the thermal shock of a traditional RAKU firing. I must take great care during the post-fire and each piece is placed individually in a metal container with the combustible of choice–almost exclusively newspaper.
Recently, I have “Put Paint to Pottery”. Rather than glazed, my bisque-fired spheres are
painted with acrylic paint then waxed, giving me a 360 degree “canvas”.

You can come as early as 6:40 to hang out around the bonfire and drop kids off to their classes.
This is our main Easter service this year. The service begins with a bonfire outside of the building (on the gravel near the main entrance ramp), reminiscent of the bonfire around which Peter denied Jesus and the bonfire on the beach on which he was later restored by Jesus’s grace. Then, light from that fire makes its way on a large candle into the darkened church building that will soon come alight as we celebrate that “while it was still dark,” Mary Magdalene discovered Jesus had risen from the dead and defeated even death, securing for us resurrection hope in each of our own darkest nights.

ALL SOULS CHURCH OF SEATTLE
7551 35th Ave SW

Good Friday
March 29
Drop-In from Noon-6p for a guided, interactive Stations of the Cross exploring key moments in Jesus’s journey to the cross designed for all ages. Sign up for a time slot, or just come.

Saturday Great Easter Vigil
March 30
7-8:15p with childcare and kid activities offered for kids up to age 9.

Sunday Sunrise Service
March 31 @ Westcrest Park
Join us in time to see the sunrise at 6:49a for a short service in Westcrest Park’s outdoor patio overlooking the city. Signage from the South Parking lot will guide you through the pea patch the patio overlook.

No Easter Sunday Afternoon Service
We gather typically on Sundays at 4p in Trinity West Seattle’s building and also have our offices in the building, but on Easter Sunday we won’t be gathering at our usual time.
