Meet the Winemakers at Sebastiano’s
Mar 23 @ 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The good season is here (hopefully to stay) and we are going to be hosting a series of wine-tasting events with domestic and international winemakers who will be telling their stories and pouring their wines.

We start this week with Ramon Perera from Celler Pardas, who will be at Sebastiano’s Natural Wines pouring five of his wines onThursday 21st from 5-7 pm.

Next are Jim and Jenny of Fossil & Fawn, an Oregon-based natural winery. They will be pouring their wines on Saturday 23rd, from 4 pm to 7 pm.

Tastings are free of charge.

Here’s some info on the winemakers and their stories:

Ramon Parera and Jordi Anan of Celler Pardas have become longtime fixtures of Catalonia’s low-intervention wine scene. In 1996, they discovered an abandoned estate 250m above sea level in the Penedés region of Catalonia. Affected by the Spanish Civil war, the Can Comas estate was made up of 60 hectares of unkempt Mediterranean forest and pasture surrounding a run-down medieval farmhouse. They discovered a gem – an ancient cellar that had survived the dregs of war. The two painstakingly restored the cellar and the building, carefully planting new vineyards and pioneering low-intervention winemaking in their region.

Ramon and Jordi have fought to bring back ancient varieties indigenous to the area like Sumoll, Xarel.lo and Malvasia Sitges. As anyone who’s tasted Celler Pardas wine knows, their efforts have definitely paid off.

Fossil & Fawn started out as a completely reasonable idea in the late summer of 2011. Jenny and Jim began with the notion of making a small amount of wine from their family vineyard as a single-site bottling, simply because no one else had done so before. The plan was to have a nice example to show to potential buyers of the Pinot noir and Pinot gris grown there. Somewhere along the line they figured that for all the effort, they might as well make it an official wine label. Thus, Fossil & Fawn was born proper as a wine label.

Jim and Jenny aren’t too interested in bold manifestos or style declarations – their goal is to make wines they like. They’ve found that the kind of wines they like are executed with a natural approach that allows the vineyard to do the talking. That means instead of buying yeast, they culture it from the vineyard itself, with no other additives or enzymes. It also means as-little-as-necessary sulfur additions and aging all of their wines in barrels, with very little new oak.

ALL SOULS CHURCH OF SEATTLE

Good Friday
March 29
Drop-In from Noon-6p for a guided, interactive Stations of the Cross exploring key moments in Jesus’s journey to the cross designed for all ages. Sign up for a time slot, or just come.

Saturday Great Easter Vigil
March 30
7-8:15p with childcare and kid activities offered for kids up to age 9.
You can come as early as 6:40 to hang out around the bonfire and drop kids off to their classes.
This is our main Easter service this year. The service begins with a bonfire outside of the building (on the gravel near the main entrance ramp), reminiscent of the bonfire around which Peter denied Jesus and the bonfire on the beach on which he was later restored by Jesus’s grace. Then, light from that fire makes its way on a large candle into the darkened church building that will soon come alight as we celebrate that “while it was still dark,” Mary Magdalene discovered Jesus had risen from the dead and defeated even death, securing for us resurrection hope in each of our own darkest nights.

Sunday Sunrise Service
March 31 @ Westcrest Park
Join us in time to see the sunrise at 6:49a for a short service in Westcrest Park’s outdoor patio overlooking the city. Signage from the South Parking lot will guide you through the pea patch the patio overlook.

No Easter Sunday Afternoon Service
We gather typically on Sundays at 4p in Trinity West Seattle’s building and also have our offices in the building, but on Easter Sunday we won’t be gathering at our usual time.

Sunday school for elementary-age children will be available during the 11:00 am service, and nursery care for infants through age 3 will be available during both services.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Mar 26 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Free playspace at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene

Essentially we are inviting Moms, Dads, caregivers to come on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 am-12 pm to bring their little ones, and to have a place to play and connect with others in the cold and rainy seasons. Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.

Join us in time to see the sunrise at 6:49a for a short service in Westcrest Park’s outdoor patio overlooking the city. Signage from the South Parking lot will guide you through the pea patch the patio overlook.

HPAC’s March 2024 meeting: Online hangout
Mar 27 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Next HPAC Meeting Wed., March 27, Zoom drop-in from 7-8 pm

With spring starting to roll in in earnest, HPAC has a light meeting agenda this week. We won’t have any speakers or presentations, just a Zoom “Open House” for folks to drop in and say “Hi”, maybe bring up concerns or things to share. You’ll find the meeting link below. (We have an upcoming in-person meeting with Councilperson Saka shortly, and will be happy to bring up what we hear from you with him.)

We also have a couple of opportunities to announce:

First of note, the HUB located in South Delridge is looking for neighborhood residents to volunteer at the site – on the Salvation Army property at 16th SW & SW Henderson.

Email HPAChair and we’ll pass you along to the HUB organizers. If you don’t know about the neighborhood HUB project, check here for more information. Basically, it is a pre-planned site to gather with communication protocols in place to assist in the event of a large earthquake or other infrastructure disruption. Once you have been oriented and been to a practice session or two, it requires little volunteer time, plus you can gain useful knowledge to protect your home and family in the event of a disaster.

We are also interested in connecting with anyone who worked on the Delridge Triangle Park planning, which happened in 2017-18, or lives near the site at 18th SW & SW Delridge. Seattle Parks Department is looking to improve open space opportunities for South Delridge and wants to hear from you in support of expanding this open space for the area.

Meanwhile your HPAC eBoard is working hard on issues to bring up at future meetings – watch for updates on the Stay Healthy Street(s) in our area, planning for bicycle improvements on Highland Park Way, and future updates from Metro on the 125/128 line service improvements. We hope to be in-person for our April meeting, until then we’ll see you online:

HPAC Coalition is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Our church will be reopening PlaySpace going forward. We have not been open since everything shut down with Covid.

Vegas DeMilo at Easy Street Records
Mar 31 @ 5:00 pm

Vegas DeMilo, a ’90s power pop band, was based out of SF when they enjoyed a regional breakout but are now spread out throughout the country with one of the guys, guitarist/vocalist Travis Ballstadt, living in West Seattle. Thru Travis’ connection, they booked an acoustic set at Easy Street Records for Sunday, March 31 (5-6p), old school rock n roll on Easter. Free, all ages.

Their new album ‘Black Sheep Lodge’ is mostly song-by-song response to Liz Phair’s ‘Exile in Guyville,’ itself, a song-by-song retort to The Rolling Stones’ ‘Exile on Main Street,’ released March 1st.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Apr 2 @ 5:30 am

Its free to anyone and everyone. Just hoping the space can be a gift to the neighborhood. One change for now is we will be opening the sanctuary up as the play area as we are still trying to rebuild and repair things from the fire last spring.

West Seattle High School presents ‘Mean Girls: The Musical’
Apr 3 @ 7:00 pm
‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 3 @ 7:30 pm

ArtsWest will produce the 2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning play ENGLISH by Sanaz Toossi. This co-production with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble will be directed by Seda co-founder Naghmeh Samini. The cast features Vahishta Vafadari, Newsha Farahani, Janet Hayatshahi, Shereen Khatibloo, and Emon Elboudwarej. ENGLISH performs at ArtsWest from April 4 through April 28, 2024.

Two words set in motion award-winning playwright Sanaz Toossi’s intricate and profound New York debut: “English Only.” This is the mantra that rules one classroom in Iran, where four adult students are preparing for the TOEFL — the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Chasing fluency through a maze of word games, listening exercises, and show-and-tell sessions, they hope that one day, English will make them whole. But it might be splitting them each in half.

ArtsWest is thrilled to be co-producing ENGLISH with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble. Seda’s co-founders, Parmida Ziaei and Naghmeh Samini are both key members of ENGLISH’s Creative Team. Ziaei, who has served as Scenic Designer on past ArtsWest productions of ALMA and AN ENDLESS SHIFT, will be Scenic and Costume Designer for the upcoming production. Director Naghmeh Samini is joining ArtsWest for the first time. A prominent, award-winning playwright and screenwriter in Iran, Samini celebrated two successful runs in Seattle as the director and playwright of The Forgotten History of Mastaneh. In a recent interview with American Theatre Magazine, Samini reflected on ENGLISH’s ability to connect with audiences. Rather than focusing on the macro, like politics or history, ENGLISH focuses on the micro – five complex characters bursting with life, humor, and dreams for their future that immediately connect with audiences and draw them in. In the article, Samini shares, “What I like about this play is that it doesn’t try to show Iranian women as superheroes. It just shows us as real people with strengths and weaknesses.”

ArtsWest will present English, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.
