ArtsWest Playhouse announces the first show in the 2023-24 Season, “Sometimes I Dream…”. Kicking off this season is the comedy Matt & Ben, by Mindy Kaling (The Office, Mindy Project) and Brenda Withers. Matt & Ben serves as a perfectly funny introduction to a season that explores how different people pursue their dreams and promises audiences a refreshing way to end their summer. The show will run from September 7th – October 1st, 2023, at ArtsWest and will be directed by local artist Zenaida Rose Smith.
Matt & Ben is a witty and irreverent play that reimagines the lives of Hollywood’s beloved bro-buddies, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the 1990s, just before they skyrocketed to fame. In a hilarious twist, Kaling and Withers wrote the roles for female-presenting performers. Seattle actors Nabilah Ahmed and Jacquelyn Miedema will portray the two Oscar-winning actors as they navigate fame, friendship, and the fateful script that would eventually become “Good Will Hunting.”
Originally debuting Off-Broadway, Matt & Ben was an instant hit, captivating audiences with its clever humor and imaginative premise. Kaling and Withers, two rising stars in the entertainment industry at the time, wrote and starred in the original production which premiered at New York’s Fringe Festival in 2002.
Matt & Ben is the perfect opening act for ArtsWest’s 2023-24 Season, “Sometimes I Dream,” which will take theatergoers on a journey through the pursuit of dreams from five diverse and captivating lenses. Under the direction of Zenaida Rose Smith, a local theatre artist who is impassioned by elevating the voices of the Global Majority, this production is sure to be infused with an invigorating energy, offering a fresh perspective on this beloved play while staying true to its comedic brilliance and heartwarming essence.
“We’re so thrilled to be opening our new season with this biting and brilliant comedy about celebrity and the Hollywood dream,” said Mathew Wright. “It’s exactly the release we need right now, and to have it in Zenaida’s expert hands with such a smart and funny cast is a dream come true.”

Saturday, September 16, 2023 Doors @ 7:00 PM Performance @ 7:30 PM The music of Jack Williams, rooted in his native South Carolina, is shaped by a 65-year career of playing folk, rock, jazz, R&B, classical and the popular music of the 30s, 40s and 50s. He is counted among the most dynamic performers on today’s “folk” circuit – “…one of the most enlightened and entertaining performers I’ve ever encountered”, said Dave Humphreys of Two-Way Street Coffeehouse in Downer’s Grove, IL. Jack is considered a “musician’s musician”, an uncommonly unique guitarist, a writer of vivid songs with a strong sense of place, and a storyteller in an old Southern tradition who further illustrates each tale with his guitar. The Artist’s Way Classes in Seattle are Now Open for Registration for Fall Quarter 2022 – Online via ZOOM
The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron is an international bestseller on the subject of creativity. Whether you see yourself as an artist or not, this book and class (led by Creativity Instructor Kate Gavigan) can be an incredibly useful resource to tap into your creative side which can benefit many parts of your life. The 2 hour a week 12 week long class will take students through the 12 chapters with an emphasis on the accompanying chapter exercises and additional creativity exercises and strategies (i.e. meditation tools). This material can work with anyone, no matter how dormant or energized their creative life may be.
Julia Cameron uses three basic tools for students to enhance their lives and their creativity: morning pages (writing 3 pages longhand of stream of consciousness writing), artist’s dates (solo fun dates with yourself) and completing creativity exercises at the back of each chapter. Students report that as a result of going through our Artist’s Way class they more fully and genuinely know themselves, they discover or re-discover their gifts and talents and have more fun and joy in their lives.
To quote Julia, “In order to retrieve your creativity, you need to find it.” The basic tools and the additional creativity exercises that we incorporate into the 12 week course can help you do just that. No prerequisites required for this class. Maximum 10 students per class. Students also meet with the instructor for a one on one chat on Zoom for 30 minutes prior to the first class and before the last class.

The Delridge Farmers Market, put on by African Community Housing & Development, is thrilled to announce its third season in the Delridge neighborhood of Seattle.
The holistic community market prioritizes success for BIPOC business owners and healthy food for the Southwest Seattle region. The market’s opening day is Saturday, May 20th 2023 and runs through October 28th 2023. Community can attend the market every Saturday from 10 am-2 pm at 9421 18th Ave SW between SW Cambridge St and SW Roxbury St.
The Delridge Farmers Market is centered around the principle of abundance and is run by a Black-women-led nonprofit organization, African Community Housing & Development, serving the African Diaspora community in the Greater Seattle Area. The market has become a vital space for small businesses to sell their products and a buzzing social hub for neighbors to enjoy fresh, nourishing food and free resources like plant starts, diapers, and more.
The Delridge Farmers Market is a critical resource for the neighborhood, where it is often more than a 15-minute walk or bike ride to the nearest supermarket. In 2022, over 12,000 pounds of produce were distributed as free grab-and-go produce bags and as direct food assistance for elders and food-insecure community members.
The market features a diverse range of vendors, selling fresh produce, flowers, prepared food, and more. The market also accepts SNAP/EBT (SNAP users can double their dollar by purchasing from a farmers market!), Fresh Bucks, and WIC/Senior FMNP. African Community Housing & Development also offers Kid Bucks: every kid who attends the market gets a $5 voucher to spend on food.
“ACHD is committed to creating a vibrant, welcoming, and abundant market that serves the Delridge neighborhood. We encourage everyone to come every Saturday to support our local vendors and be in community,” said ACHD Associate Director Bilan Aden.

CRAETORUS-
Starting as a solo musician from late 2017 to 2021, Darla Rae (front person of Craetorus) has been making moves to push for inclusivity and diversity in the WA music scene. Their lyrics are described as contemplative, with tinges of catchiness, but enough to leave you with catharsis and a yearning for self reflection. Musically sounding in the likes of jazz, r&b, psychedelia, prog rock and indie, they’ve somehow made a conglomeration of it all to make Craetorus’ distinct sound. Releasing their first single, “Ivy” in April of 2019, they’ve been on the path to musical discovery with the recent support in May of 2022 from Jon Garber, Lychen Gipaya, Ryan Anthony Brooks, Nico Mitchell & Danilo Martinez. Catch them soon with an EP release in 2023.
LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION-
Seattle Indie Alternative/Alt-Country
From WASHMAG on Lightweight Champion’s debut EP, “Valley” –
“Lightweight Champion exact alt-country with an air of orderliness; think a pair of boots freshly scuffed rather than worn in. The melodies are simple but compelling, the rhythm section is tight, and Gabriel Delayne’s versatile piano keys makes for a formidable secret weapon. Most of it is comfortingly well-trodden material, like the three-chord lamentation of “Underperforming” and the breezy “Winter Leaves.” Closer “Daisy” is the outlier, a milieu of synth and processed vocals that foreshadow an intriguing path for the band outside the familiar bar buzzers the band does so well here.”

I’m excited to share that there’s another civic conversation about artificial intelligence coming up at C&P Coffee on Thursday, September 28th between 5-7 pm.
In our conversation last month, I think the group achieved a really wonderful flow of sharing ideas, questions, feelings, experiences, and information regarding AI. The ultimate aim has always been to create a space where various perspectives are welcome, where we can all learn from one another, and where we can also practice democratic dialogue. C&P has been a really wonderful supporter of the work by offering their space to us to practice these important things in community.
I’ve created a webpage where people can go to learn more and register for free.
