Georgetown Haunted History Tour @ various times
Oct 7 @ 6:30 pm

The Georgetown Haunted History Tour is gearing up to kick off Spooky Season, and we’re hoping West Seattleites will join in the fun.

It’s the 20th anniversary of the Georgetown Haunted History Tour, with even more shows added this year! The GHHT is a guided, immersive, 90-minute walking tour of Seattle’s oldest and most haunted neighborhood. Groups of thrill-seekers wind their way through spooky landmarks where tales of true (and embellished) local history are brought to life. Stops include the Georgetown Steam Plant where lights, aerialists and live music transform the space and the Seattle Drum School–formerly the Georgetown Funeral Home, for a spooky seance that calls forth troubled spirits with grisly stories to tell.

Tickets will sell out, so reserve your spot now

And if you love dressing up, consider volunteering! We need help with set-up, box office, parking etc. You’ll get a free ticket and T-shirt! Sign up here

ASIAN AMERICANS, COMEDY AND BELONGING

Laughter shapes the way we listen to each other, and can be a signal of who belongs—and who doesn’t.

While everyone finds different things funny, we all have experienced laughter. And what we find funny shapes how we interconnect. Through clips of Asian American stand-up comedians, Professor Michelle Liu explores how humor can change the patterns of belonging that everyone in the United States has inherited.

When we want to learn about the past, we turn to history books. When we want to learn about how the past continues to live within us, we can turn to humor. Join Liu for a conversation about why laughing matters.

Michelle Liu (she/her) is a professor of English and the associate director of writing programs at the University of Washington. She specializes in writing and exploring ideas about identity, history, emotion, and storytelling. She has taught for nearly 20 years with the goal of helping people interconnect their hearts, minds, and experiences in their learning. She earned her PhD in American Studies from Yale University.

Liu lives in Seattle.

Saturday, October 14, 2023–8 am-10:30 am – Maximum (80%) at 9:20 am

North end of Westcrest Park. 9000 8th Ave. SW

I’ll bring whatever glasses I have left, help you be sure you’re viewing safely (as long as you ask me!), and I’ll bring indirect viewers.

What if it is cloudy or raining??? Great question. Phenomenal question. Welcome to astronomy in Seattle, where “through the clouds” is our tagline.

Thunder: cancelled

Heavy rain/clouds: if it is the kind of weather than might clear up, I am likely to go anyway and wait it out. If it is going to stay socked in, I may cancel and drive over Snoqualmie Pass. If there is another location in Seattle where it is clearer, we may move locations. I’ll post movements on all the social media and be sure West Seattle Blog knows. I watched the transit of Venus through a filtered telescope over which we were holding an umbrella. An. Umbrella.

Light clouds: oh yeah, we’re doing this. Our lighter clouds move around a lot, and the Sun shines through them.

REMEMBER: It is NOT safe to view the eclipse through the clouds without other protection. You still need eclipse glasses or indirect methods, even though indirect methods are less likely to work when cloudy.

South Delridge Farmers Market 2023 @ Hope Academy
Oct 14 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

The Delridge Farmers Market, put on by African Community Housing & Development, is thrilled to announce its third season in the Delridge neighborhood of Seattle.

The holistic community market prioritizes success for BIPOC business owners and healthy food for the Southwest Seattle region. The market’s opening day is Saturday, May 20th 2023 and runs through October 28th 2023. Community can attend the market every Saturday from 10 am-2 pm at 9421 18th Ave SW between SW Cambridge St and SW Roxbury St.

The Delridge Farmers Market is centered around the principle of abundance and is run by a Black-women-led nonprofit organization, African Community Housing & Development, serving the African Diaspora community in the Greater Seattle Area. The market has become a vital space for small businesses to sell their products and a buzzing social hub for neighbors to enjoy fresh, nourishing food and free resources like plant starts, diapers, and more.

The Delridge Farmers Market is a critical resource for the neighborhood, where it is often more than a 15-minute walk or bike ride to the nearest supermarket. In 2022, over 12,000 pounds of produce were distributed as free grab-and-go produce bags and as direct food assistance for elders and food-insecure community members.

The market features a diverse range of vendors, selling fresh produce, flowers, prepared food, and more. The market also accepts SNAP/EBT (SNAP users can double their dollar by purchasing from a farmers market!), Fresh Bucks, and WIC/Senior FMNP. African Community Housing & Development also offers Kid Bucks: every kid who attends the market gets a $5 voucher to spend on food.

“ACHD is committed to creating a vibrant, welcoming, and abundant market that serves the Delridge neighborhood. We encourage everyone to come every Saturday to support our local vendors and be in community,” said ACHD Associate Director Bilan Aden.

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs … so please check our website for updates.

The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.

Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stop-gap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.

Please note! If you can’t make it to the monthly drive, you can leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance. IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.
