‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 4 @ 7:30 pm

ArtsWest will produce the 2023 Pulitzer Prize-winning play ENGLISH by Sanaz Toossi. This co-production with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble will be directed by Seda co-founder Naghmeh Samini. The cast features Vahishta Vafadari, Newsha Farahani, Janet Hayatshahi, Shereen Khatibloo, and Emon Elboudwarej. ENGLISH performs at ArtsWest from April 4 through April 28, 2024.

Two words set in motion award-winning playwright Sanaz Toossi’s intricate and profound New York debut: “English Only.” This is the mantra that rules one classroom in Iran, where four adult students are preparing for the TOEFL — the Test of English as a Foreign Language. Chasing fluency through a maze of word games, listening exercises, and show-and-tell sessions, they hope that one day, English will make them whole. But it might be splitting them each in half.

ArtsWest is thrilled to be co-producing ENGLISH with Seda Iranian Theatre Ensemble. Seda’s co-founders, Parmida Ziaei and Naghmeh Samini are both key members of ENGLISH’s Creative Team. Ziaei, who has served as Scenic Designer on past ArtsWest productions of ALMA and AN ENDLESS SHIFT, will be Scenic and Costume Designer for the upcoming production. Director Naghmeh Samini is joining ArtsWest for the first time. A prominent, award-winning playwright and screenwriter in Iran, Samini celebrated two successful runs in Seattle as the director and playwright of The Forgotten History of Mastaneh. In a recent interview with American Theatre Magazine, Samini reflected on ENGLISH’s ability to connect with audiences. Rather than focusing on the macro, like politics or history, ENGLISH focuses on the micro – five complex characters bursting with life, humor, and dreams for their future that immediately connect with audiences and draw them in. In the article, Samini shares, “What I like about this play is that it doesn’t try to show Iranian women as superheroes. It just shows us as real people with strengths and weaknesses.”

ArtsWest will present English, Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 3 pm.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 7 @ 3:00 pm

I know where my eclipse event will be!Time: Monday, April 8, 2024 10:30 am-12:30 pm

Location: South Seattle College — grassy field to the east of the south parking lot. Just south of the Wellness Center.

Map.

Parking permits for the lots on campus are for sale at the kiosks. Street parking is available on 16th Ave SW.

I’ll bring whatever glasses I have left, help you be sure you’re viewing safely (as long as you ask me!), and I’ll bring indirect viewers.

All ages welcome! Public is invited! Students and college community members invited!

What if it is cloudy or raining???

Thunder: cancelled

Heavy rain/clouds: if it is the kind of weather than might clear up, I am likely to go anyway and wait it out. If it is going to stay socked in, I may cancel. I’ll post information on all the social media and be sure West Seattle Blog knows.

Light clouds: oh yeah, we’re doing this. Our lighter clouds move around a lot, and the Sun shines through them.

REMEMBER: It is NOT safe to view the eclipse through the clouds without other protection. You still need eclipse glasses or indirect methods, even though indirect methods are less likely to work when cloudy.

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Apr 9 @ 5:30 am

F3, a free national men’s workout group:

We have a local workout location that meets at Hiawatha park on Tuesday mornings at 5:30 am sharp. The group has been around for a few years, so many folks that are up early might have come across us before doing burpees or pushups and counting out loud. We’d love to extend the invite to men of any fitness level – we work out as a group and don’t leave anyone behind, come as you are and hopefully leave a bit better.

The workout is 45 minutes long and then we all get coffee at West Seattle Grounds. You don’t need to bring anything special, just wear comfortable athletic clothes appropriate for the weather and some sneakers. Some work or gardening gloves can be helpful if you have a pair. Just don’t be late or the whole group is doing penalty burpees.

Words, Writers, Southwest Stories, April 2024 @ online
Apr 11 @ 6:00 pm

THURSDAY, APRIL 11TH: WORDS, WRITERS, SOUTHWEST STORIES PRESENTS:

Kestrel Smith

Fish Wars: Tribal Rights, Resistance, and Resiliency in the Pacific Northwest

In the 1960s and 70s, tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest launched protests and acts of civil disobedience to pressure the government to recognize their fishing rights. Now known as the “Fish Wars,” the lessons from these events remain relevant today.

In this talk, professor Kestrel A. Smith surveys the evidence and events before and after the Fish Wars, which rocked Washington State for decades. Encompassing tribal sovereignty, treaties, statehood, and the fish themselves, the Fish Wars are a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness. Understanding these events is a first, and essential, step in achieving social, cultural, and political justice.

Kestrel A. Smith (she/her) is the Department Chair of the American Indian Indigenous Studies (AIIS) program at Wenatchee Valley College-Omak. Much of her work has focused on how to place Indigenous epistemologies and education within broader historical and cultural contexts to better understand the contemporary Indigenous experience. In the Fall of 2018, Smith moved to Washington State to begin building a new AIIS program at Wenatchee Valley College-Omak, the state’s first full AIIS program at a community college.

Smith lives in Omak.

This event will be held virtually, via Zoom on April 11, 2024, at 6 pm. A link to join this event will be emailed to registered participants on the day of the event.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 11 @ 7:30 pm

Diving cleanup off Seacrest
Apr 13 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm

Seattle Dive Tours is, again, partnering with SR3 and Marination Ma Kai and organizing a Seacrest Pier underwater clean up. This area is generally off limits to divers and Seattle Dive Tours has coordinated with Seattle Parks and Recreation and the West Seattle Water Taxi to perform the clean up during a Water Taxi no-service weekend. Seattle Dive Tours is again partnering with SR3 and Marination Ma Kai.

Volunteer on Seattle Dive Tours – Special Event Calendar.

Divers will enter the water in two shifts to remove marine debris lurking below the surface of the Salish Sea. Additional volunteers on the dock will sort through the debris and document the weight and types of debris found. This data will be uploaded to larger, worldwide datasets in order to reveal the greatest threats around the world.

Last year, over 300 pounds of debris was removed in this single-day cleanup! This included a TV, Lime Scooter, a fertilizer wheelbarrow, over 300 fishing lures, heaps of fishing line and hundreds of single use plastic bottles, cans and bags.

These events could not have been done without the partnership of our hardy volunteers, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and the King County Water Taxi (Department of Metro Transportation, Marine Division). We hope to continue this as a yearly event to keep our ocean as clean as possible.

‘English’ performances at ArtsWest
Apr 13 @ 7:30 pm

Early morning F3 men’s workout group at Hiawatha
Apr 16 @ 5:30 am
