Arts in Nature Festival 2016 @ Camp Long
Aug 21 @ 11:00 am – 6:00 pm

The 2016 Arts in Nature Festival will return on August 20-21 at Camp Long. The festival is an eclectic experience of music, art, poetry and performance in the woods of Seattle’s only camp ground. The diverse lineup of artists includes music from indie rock to traditional Japanese folk, African dance, reggae, plus dance performance, poetry, and audio/visual art installations in the Museum of Sound.

Highlights of the artist lineup include Seattle’s favorite Clinton Fearon with Boogie Brown Band, Dixie Gypsy Project, Seattle Art Song Society, Etienne Cakpo with Gansango Music & Dance group and Seattle Art Song Society, with many others rounding out the weekend lineup.

The “arts in nature” concept encourages artists and audience members to engage in active participation both with each other and with the natural landscape of Camp Long. Performances will be intimate, ambient, and acoustic in three different venues throughout the park: in a forested grove by the Pond, on the climbing Glacier, and at the Mainstage in the Meadow.

Camp Long’s rustic cabins will house the MUSEUM OF SOUND where artists will take up residency for the weekend creating multidisciplinary installations blending sound, auditory arts, music and visual arts. The cabins meander through the forested perimeter of the park, and festival goers will have the opportunity to enter and
explore each cabin. Most of the cabins will have a hands-on component allowing attendees to interact with the artists’ work.

Installations include work by Markel Uriu, Shannon Noel, Amaranta Ibarra-Sandys and poetry and spoken word by Imani Sims.

In addition to viewing performances and installations, festival-goers can participate in poetry workshops, art activities, costumed hikes through the forest, and a beer garden sponsored by Fremont Brewing.

The Arts in Nature Festival is an annual event hosted by Nature Consortium, a West Seattle-based nonprofit that connects people, arts, and nature. The Festival is a longstanding tradition, made stronger this year with additional support from DNDA. Tickets for the festival are on sale for $10 per day or $16 for the weekend. To view the full artist lineup and purchase tickets today, visit http://fest.naturec.org.

The Arts in Nature Festival is made possible with support from The Boeing Company, Nucor, The Stranger, Fremont Brewing, KUOW, DNDA and Camp Long.

Pundamonium @ Skylark Café & Club
Aug 25 @ 8:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Pundamonium, the slam-style punmaking contest is now permanently on the 4th Thursday of each month at the Skylark Café and Club.

Sign up at 7 pm, puns at 8 pm–10 pm.

In case you’re wondering what Pundamonium entails…One by one, 10 contestants have two minutes each to make puns based on prompts they have received ahead of time. Each contestant is immediately judged by five members of the audience, who have been selected before the show to be judges. They rank each punner on a scale of 1 to 10, often with hilariously long decimals and other commentary.

Then they do it again, only this time contestants get their prompts on stage and only have 30 seconds to think and another two minutes to make puns.

The top four contestants go head to head in a final pun-off.

The winner this month will receive a $50 gift certificate for The Skylark, redeemable immediately!

Kertson in-store free all-ages show @ Easy Street Records
Aug 27 @ 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Seventeen-year-old Jason Kertson began learning to play the guitar at age seven and began performing in coffee houses and other venues when he was nine. Those of you who attended our Record Store Day in-store with The Sonics last year might recall Jason – who is Sonics’ sax player Rob Lind’s grandson – guesting with the band on “Louie Louie.” In February, 2011, Ray William Johnson, a YouTube icon, tweeted a link of a YouTube video that was recorded when Jason was 12. Jason had 250,000 YouTube views that week, which generated a lot of interest from people in the music business. Since then Jason has recorded a session with Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine and performed with Dave’s daughter Electra; auditioned and appeared on “The Voice”; recorded & performed with Duff McKagan’s daughter’s band, The Pink Slips; and formed his own band, Kertson.

Join Kertson at Easy Street Records on August 27th for the release of their new album, _Lonely_. The album will be on sale, and several surprise guests will join the band throughout the night.

The 2016 Alki Beach 5k Run/Walk @ Start from Alki Statue of Liberty Plaza
Aug 28 @ 9:00 am – 11:00 am

Northwest Hope and Healing‘s annual Alki Beach 5k Run/Walk, to raise money for its mission of helping breast- and gynecological-cancer patients. The route on Alki Avenue SW will close for a few hours that morning for the run/walk, by the way. Register online at the official website!

The event starts at 9 am. More from the organizers:

2016 Alki Beach 5k

Great Route. Gorgeous waterfront.
And a genuinely good cause.

When you’re fighting to survive, you shouldn’t have to struggle to eat, pay your utilities or phone bill, or have transportation to treatment. The Alki Beach 5k raises money to provide immediate financial assistance to local women who are undergoing treatment for breast or gynecologic cancer at Swedish Cancer Institute.

Pre-registered walkers and runners will be able to pick up their packets at West Seattle Runner on Friday, August 26 from 5-7pm, or on Saturday, August 27 from 10am to 2pm.

Suggested Minimum Pledge: $100 per person
Although fundraising is not required, we urge you to gather donations to help local cancer patients. Last year this event raised more than $75,000 in financial aid for women with breast and gynecological cancer. This year, the need is even greater, and with your help, we’re hoping to DOUBLE the proceeds from last year. Ask ten friends to donate $10; make a $50 donation and have your employer donate; hold a garage sale and donate the proceeds, and you’ll have $100 before you know it. But don’t stop there! All donations are welcome, and the sky is the limit. So many people in our community have experienced cancer or cared for someone with cancer that they will be grateful for the chance to help if you just ask!

About the Route
Enjoy the sights and sounds of West Seattle via a gorgeous waterfront 5K route (that’s 3.1 miles), encompassing Alki Beach and the restored Bathhouse, Alki Beach Park, Anchor Park, and stunning views of the waterfront and downtown Seattle.

About Parking
Both Alki AND Harbor Avenues will be closed to traffic starting at 8:00 am on the morning of the Event. Because parking is always challenging on a summer day at Alki Beach, please plan to carpool, take the bus, have someone drop you off, or arrive early to allow time for parking and walking to the event starting point.

We have a large outreach to the homeless population of West Seattle… Sunday service is 6 PM held in the fellowship of our dear friends at St. John The Baptist Episcopal Church – enter through the doors on the southeast corner of 42nd Ave & SW Hanford SW. 206/890-8110. Drop in and see what this craze that is growing in popularity by the day, nationally and locally, is all about!

We are an informal group in the afternoons on Wednesday so it’s actually optional for you to RSVP. Although we do appreciate knowing how many people to expect.

Just come, if you can, and bring a card, if you have one and a set, in case we need an extra one. We almost always have two full tables and sometimes three!

And as usual:

– We play-for-charity so please remember to come to the table with around $5 in change to “gamble” with. It’s fun and easy and here all winnings are donated. And, of course, additional donations are always appreciated.

– Since this is a public restaurant, we encourage everyone to purchase beverages and snacks. This is the best way to show our appreciation for being allowed to use this free space.

– Mah Jongg Fever was founded to play American Mah Jongg according to National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) rules and raise money for charity.

– We teach beginners and we are open to the public – everyone is welcome!

Mah Jongg Fever Meetup @ Uptown Espresso
Sep 9 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Weekly American Mah Jongg Games where everyone is welcome! We teach beginners. Come with $5 in quarters and all winnings are donated to charity.

Wednesdays at 1 pm and Fridays at Noon
Uptown Espresso on Delridge

Camp Long 75th Anniversary and Mountain Fest
Sep 10 @ 11:00 am – 5:00 pm

Seattle Parks and Recreation invites you and your family to celebrate Camp’s Long Mountain Fest –and the camp’s 75th anniversary– from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 10th, 2016.

Camp Long Mountain Fest celebrates Seattle’s mountain climbing history and community. Visitors can challenge themselves on the high ropes course and try climbing and rappelling on Schurman Rock (with waivers). There will be mountain games and interactive workshops for people of all ages and abilities and prizes will be awarded. You can join in activities including rock climbing, ropes course, orienteering, nature exploration, outdoor skills, historical exhibit, falconry, crafts, and art. And don’t miss the flag ceremony at 1:30 pm.

All events are free and take place at Camp Long (5200 35th Ave. SW).

Schurman Rock was constructed between 1938 and 1939 by the Work Progress Administration, and is believed to be the first man-made climbing structure in America. It was originally named Monitor Rock because climbing instructors could monitor their students from all sides of the structure. In 1957, it was renamed to honor Clark Schurman who designed it.

Schurman, known as “The Chief,” was the chief climbing guide on Mount Rainier from 1938 to 1941. As a climber, he sketched and painted his journeys into a book published by The Mountaineers in 1939. Schurman thought it was important for novice climbers to have a practice rock. Schurman Rock stands as a legacy to his vision.

For more information about Camp Long Mountain Fest, please call 206-423-3460 or visit seattle.gov/environment/rock.htm. Camp Long Mountain Fest is sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation, the Associated Recreation Council, O2 Outdoor Opportunities and Mountain Madness.

It’s a mini-farm in the middle of a residential neighborhood – the High Point Market Garden. Every summer, its farm stand offers a weekly chance to buy fresh-grown produce steps from where it’s grown. Just-harvested organic produce will be on sale 4 pm-7 pm at the farm stand at 32nd and Juneau (map), every Wednesday through September 28th. EBT cards are accepted and the stand participates in Fresh Bucks, doubling the first $10 spent on the card.

Seattle P-Patch Market Gardens is a program of the P-Patch Community Gardening Program in collaboration with the Seattle Housing Authority and P-Patch Trust to support low-income gardeners and neighborhoods. Its mission is to establish safe, healthy communities and economic opportunity through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and farm stand enterprises.

Cooking with Class 2016 @ Salty's on Alki
Sep 15 @ 6:00 pm – 9:30 pm

From Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor):

15th Annual Cooking with Class 2016 at Salty’s on Alki
Cook with Your Favorite Seattle Chefs, Sept. 15 2016

Sometimes a good idea just keeps on giving. Cooking with Class is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year having raised almost a million dollars over these many years. People love getting to know Seattle area chefs and cooking with them, and chefs love meeting their guests instead of being behind the scenes as they are at most fundraisers. It’s a win-win for everyone, especially our beneficiary. This year we embark in a new direction specifically targeting programs that assist seniors at the Pike Place Market Foundation. Seniors can get overlooked in the world of fundraising; we like to focus on helping make their lives a little more secure and comfortable.

Join us at this fun event on September 15, 2016, at Salty’s on Alki in West Seattle. Tickets sell out every year, so be sure to check out seattledining.com/cwc for the list of chefs and the food items they will teach you about and availability. Each chef donates their time, experience and product. Auction and raffle items, and the great items in the gift bags, are all donated. It’s an amazing amount of good will. The topper is, of course, Salty’s on Alki. For 15 years they have donated the venue — their entire banquet floor at sea level. They have three chefs at the event. They feed the volunteers before the event. They feed volunteers and chefs at a post party. They provide appetizers before the classes begin. They never charge us a cleaning fee (22 chefs, 176 guests cooking; imagine the cleanup). Thank you, Gerry and Kathy Kingen, for your amazing generosity. The event couldn’t happen without you!

This year Taylor Shellfish returns to shuck oysters on the front deck before classes start where you can also enjoy these fine oyster-friendly wines:

Long Shadows 2015 Nine Hats Pinot Gris
Davenport Cellars Sauvignon Blanc and Fume Blanc
Blends Inc. Tomero Torrontes
Dunham Cellars 2014 Lewis Vineyard Riesling
Treveri Extra Brut
Brian Carter Oriana

Be sure to also look for the Wine Tasting Table with a taste of the wines served during class. If you’ve never experienced Cooking with Class, make this the year you sign up — go online to seattledining.com/cwc. It’s a fun evening that helps a lot of people and takes place in one of the nicest spots in town with the best view of Seattle. There’s just nothing bad about it.

Mah Jongg Fever Meetup @ Uptown Espresso
Sep 16 @ 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm

Weekly American Mah Jongg Games where everyone is welcome! We teach beginners. Come with $5 in quarters and all winnings are donated to charity.

Wednesdays at 1 pm and Fridays at Noon
Uptown Espresso on Delridge

Salty’s on Alki (WSB sponsor) presents live New Orleans jazz featuring Dave Holo Trio.

Come listen to Dave Holo and his talented musical mates! Here’s what Dave has to say about his own musical journey, “Stumbling onto the local traditional jazz scene a few years after moving to Seattle was huge for me. I’ve been blessed in many ways. Regardless, it would be hard for me to overstate the impact of jazz on my life. I’ve met most of my friends through jazz; I’ve traveled; I’ve played and recorded with some amazing musicians. I really love those nights when I have my best stuff, the band has it all working, and we make a real connection with an audience … wow! It’s pretty heady stuff!”

Live music and a Waterfront View of the City. Enjoy the famous Salty’s food and fare, but there is no food or drink minimum.
