Paul Dorpat presents ‘Fish Tales’ about Ivar Haglund @ West Seattle (Admiral) Library
Feb 7 @ 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Is there anyone better than Paul Dorpat at “keeping clam” about Seattle legend and West Seattle native Ivar Haglund?

Dorpat — the city’s pre-eminent photo historian, who has entered his 34th year of weekly “Now and Then” columns in the Seattle Times — for more than a decade also has been researching and writing a massive biography of Haglund, the iconic restaurateur, folk musician, Port of Seattle commissioner and goofy promotional wizard.

Sponsored by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society and The Seattle Public Library, the genial Dorpat will present “Fish Tales,” a talk accompanied by scores of rare photos of Haglund, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016, in the basement meeting room of the West Seattle (Admiral) Branch of The Seattle Public Library in the Admiral district.

The FREE presentation will end about 3 pm, after which those attending can stop in down the hill at the historical society’s “Birthplace of Seattle” Log House Museum to see its latest exhibit, on loan from the Nordic Heritage Museum, called “Keep Clam and Carry On: The Ivar Haglund Story.”

Dorpat’s talk will emphasize the deep West Seattle roots of Haglund (1905-1985), the grandson of Hans Hanson, who for many years posted a lantern at Alki Point that predated the 1913 construction of the Alki Lighthouse. Haglund’s maternal grandparents purchased the Alki Point land in 1869 from Seattle pioneer David “Doc” Maynard.

All of this and much more will be covered by Dorpat, who also will be available at the museum exhibit after his talk. The exhibit features display panels, vintage TV footage and radio recordings, along with a “clam gun” and one of the clam outfits used to promote Ivar’s restaurants in Seattle parades and commercials.

To see the exhibit, stop in during regular open hours, noon to 4 pm Thursdays through Sundays.

Community Meeting: Participatory Budget Initiative ‘Youth Voice, Youth Choice’ @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Feb 10 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Youth Voice, Youth Choice, the City of Seattle’s new Participatory Budgeting (PB) Initiative for youth, kicks off this week with the first of seven idea assemblies to be held across the city. This is the first stage of the program which gives youth the opportunity to decide how to spend $700,000 of the City’s budget.

The idea assemblies are where the public can brainstorm ideas for projects they would like to see in their communities. Anyone can attend and participate. The West Seattle event will be on February 10 from 4–6 pm at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center.

Once the public assemblies are completed, the next stage involves youth volunteers who will turn the ideas into concrete proposals with help from Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and City staff. Seattle youth will then get to vote for the projects they would like to see implemented. Once the projects are decided, City staff and local agencies will implement the projects.

Participatory Budgeting (PB) is a democratic process where community members directly decide how to spend part of a public budget. This initiative began here last July when Seattle Mayor Murray and former Councilmember Nick Licata announced the launch of a citywide youth PB process. Youth Voice, Youth Choice is managed by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DON) with the goal of empowering youth to make decisions on how to spend a portion of the budget.

For more information, contact Rahwa Habte, Youth Engagement Strategic Advisor, at 206.615.2008. For other ways to get involved, visit www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/youth-participatory-budgeting

Free training course: Active Shooter Basic Response @ Schmitz Park Elementary School
Mar 16 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Active Shooter Basic Response Course: Prevention, Preparation, and Reaction
Wednesday, March 16, 6:30-8:30 pm
Schmitz Park Elementary School

We want to ensure that as many people are trained as possible to recognize early warning signs and can help prevent these tragedies. And if we ever end up caught in the middle of one, that we have the skills and knowledge to know what to do.

This is especially important if you are an educator, in charge of safety and emergencies for your department or company, or fearful of these situations and want to relieve some of the worry you have through educating yourself.

We hope you will join us at this very important training course. Tickets are free, but you must register for a spot.

COURSE INFORMATION:

The Active Shooter, Basic Response Course offered by Alexo Corp. is a 90 minute introductory course. This course includes 70-75 minutes of presentation time and 15-20 minutes for questions and answers. This course focuses primarily on three strategies for the mitigation of these events. Those strategies are PREVENTION, PREPARATION, and REACTION. Prevention strategies include policy, identification, and internal work groups. Preparation strategies focus less on the individual and more on what steps organizations can take to protect their employees and minimize the risk of this type of event. Reaction strategies examine individual responses during an event and what to expect from first responders.

We are fortunate to be teaming up with lead instructors that have a total combined 50+ years in local level law enforcement with over 20+ years assigned to a full time tactical team. They have personally responded to multiple active shooter events, presented at both a local and national level on the topic, and been primarily responsible for aiding in the development of the “best practice” response to these type of events.

Adults only please.

Thank you,

Katie Stemp
Founder, Seattle Farm School
