Tibbetts Labyrinth – Inauguration Meditation @ Tibbetts United Methodist Church
Jan 18 @ 9:00 am – 8:00 pm

Inauguration Meditation – Labyrinth at Tibbetts UMC (WSB sponsor):
The Presidential Inauguration ceremony is on Friday, January 20th and there are many in and around our community who are concerned and upset about the political climate in the U.S. Tibbetts is blessed to have a Labyrinth, which will be available for contemplative walking beginning Wednesday Jan 18th for those who wish to meditate, pray, or simply find peace.

Labyrinths have been in use for over 4000 years and the basic design is fundamental to
nature and many cultures, religious and non-religious traditions. Walking the labyrinth can clear the mind, give insight and soothe your heart. The simplistic symmetry is made even more meaningful when accompanied by music. We extend an invitation to all in the community, especially those who are struggling to find a means to gain clarity, find peace, pray or meditate about what changes there will be in the U.S. in the coming years.

The Tibbetts Labyrinth will be set up in the gathering hall (NE corner of 41st & Andover) from Wednesday 1/18 through Saturday 1/21, hours listed below. The Labyrinth is made of heavy canvas and we ask that walkers remove shoes before starting. We will have hand-held labyrinths available for those who are mobility challenged and music will play softly in the background.

Tibbetts welcomes ALL to come walk the labyrinth during one of the open times below:
* Wednesday and Thursday from 9 am to 2 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm (Jan 18 & 19)
* Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and 6 pm to 8 pm (Jan 20)

Free Community Event: Young Storytellers Project @ Youngstown Cultural Arts Center
Feb 3 @ 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Chief Sealth International High School students will take the stage at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center to share their stories with the community. Come hear, connect, interact and support young people you might never otherwise meet! Stories, music, time to mingle. Bring a potluck dish to share if you can. Potluck at 6:30, stories begin at 7:00.

Friday February 3rd, 6:30-9:30 pm
Free Community Event: Young Storytellers Project

More:
Teachers at Chief Sealth International High School is working to support our students to hone their storytelling craft and bring it to the Youngstown Stage. We’re also getting help from Danielle K.L. Grégoire – pro story teller, educator and former program manager for The Moth (https://www.facebook.com/TheMoth/) for this event.

One thing that has always been important, perhaps even more now is to reach out and connect. What we know is that while so many communities share the same geography, we rarely actually connect. The lack of connections allows people to believe things about each other that is not true. It makes us vulnerable to fear, to implicit bias and to stereotypes. One of the most beautiful things about our Chief Sealth community is that we actually do connect – across race, across gender, across gender identity, across socioeconomic status, across age, across national origin and citizenship status. We want to share that with the wider community.

This event is different! Our young people will tell their personal stories – about 5 minutes each. Rather than this being a “story slam” we are working with Danielle Gregoire to pilot “messages of support.” Rather than being judged or scored, audience members will have a chance to write small notes about how they connected with the stories. These little love letters will be collected and given to the story tellers! What? Love, support connection between teenagers and adults in their community who might never have had the chance to connect? Isn’t that the world you want?

It’s also at the Youngtown Cultural Arts Center! The place was designed to create connection. If you’ve been there, you know what that feels like. If you haven’t, you’ll love it. And did you know that the “Thelma DeWitty” theater – where this event will be held, was named for the first African American School Teacher in the Seattle Public School District who, you guessed it, taught at the “Old Cooper School.” (okay, longer story but the Youngstown School was renamed “Cooper” for a while before we turned it back into “Youngstown” for its new life as a Cultural Arts Center). Come, bring some food, spend Friday night connecting with new and old friends, hearing stories, and supporting young people.

Caregiver Classes
Adult Education – Support U: Fostering Caregiver Wellness Series

Do you care for, or simply worry about, an adult with a chronic condition or disability that needs support for living their best life? Whether that person is living with you, nearby or far away, is related to you or not – you are a caregiver. While you focus on the person for whom you care, the Support U adult education series will focus on you – the caregiver.

Support UTM: Fostering Caregiver Wellness, a program of Lutheran Community Services, partners with local congregations to make life better for seniors and their caregivers. Basic care-giving information and tips, presented in accessible classes, will help reduce the number of caregivers who suffer from burnout by trying to “do it all” alone.

About the Seattle Seafair Commodores –

For over 60 years, the Seafair Commodores have been serving the Seattle community as the Seafair Festival’s official Goodwill Ambassadors. We are active year round representing Seattle and Seafair at festivals throughout the Northwest and British Columbia, as well as many community service projects. We are proud to be one of the five Seafair volunteer “families” – distinct volunteer groups that were part of the original founding of the Seafair Festival in the 1940s. The Commodores started as a group of Seattle business leaders who came together to raise money for the festival. We continue to honor our original mission by raising money for the Seafair Foundation and Scholarship Program for Women.
