Better than candy hearts, this February WordsWest Literary Series welcomes naturalists Elizabeth Bradfield and Lyanda Lynn Haupt for “Loving the World from Starlings to Shorelines,” an evening of crucial writing about our inner impulses and our relationships with the environment at large.

WordsWest Literary Series is grateful for grant funding from Seattle Office of Arts and Culture and Poets & Writers, Inc. that allows us to pay our writers for their time and talent.

Elizabeth Bradfield is the author of the poetry collections Once Removed, Approaching Ice, and Interpretive Work. Her poems and essays have appeared in The New Yorker, West Branch, Orion and many anthologies. She has been awarded a Stegner Fellowship, the Audre Lorde Prize, and was a finalist for the James Laughlin Award from the Academy of American Poets. Founder and editor-in- chief of Broadsided Press, she lives on Cape Cod, works as a naturalist locally as well as on expedition ships in the high latitudes, and teaches creative writing at Brandeis University.

Lyanda Lynn Haupt is a naturalist, eco-philosopher and speaker whose writing connects people with nature in their everyday lives. Her newest book is Mozart’s Starling. Lyanda’s previous books include Crow Planet: Essential Wisdom from the Urban Wilderness, winner of the 2010 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award, and Rare Encounters with Ordinary Birds, winner of the 2002 Washington State Book Award. Her writing has also appeared in Utne, LA Times, Image, and other publications. Lyanda has created educational programs for Seattle Audubon and researched seabirds in the remote tropical Pacific. She lives in Seattle with her husband, daughter, and Carmen the starling.

Every third Wednesday, 7pm, at C & P Coffee Company, WordsWest hosts literary events that range from readings by published local and national authors, to craft discussions and guided writing explorations for every experience level. Each month a community member from a local, independent business shares his or her favorite poem as part of the Favorite Poem Project. On February 21st, we welcome a favorite poem from Reading Partners Seattle, which mobilizes volunteers to provide students at under-resourced schools with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade.

WordsWest is curated by West Seattle writers Katy E. Ellis, Susan Rich, and Harold Taw, and this season’s intern/co-curator is Joannie Stangeland.
