On Saturday January 30, neighbors, trail users and other stakeholders are invited to a two hour workshop at South Seattle College to discuss what the future trail system in the West Duwamish Greenbelt might look like.

The West Duwamish Greenbelt extends from the West Seattle Bridge south to Westcrest Park. It is the largest contiguous forest in Seattle. Currently a network of informal and improved trails provide some access. Participants will discuss potential connections to destinations such as South Seattle College, the Duwamish Longhouse, Pathfinder School, Riverview Playfield and others.

The workshop will be held at the Chan Center at South Seattle College. It is located at the north end of campus next to the arboretum. The workshop runs from 9:30am to 11:30am, with doors opening at 9:15am. All are welcome. Those interested in learning more about the trails can visit the West Duwamish Greenbelt Trails Facebook page.

Please attend this workshop if you would like to see more trails within the greenbelt or have an opinion about what development should look like.  The greenbelt is an incredible resource- five or so miles from the WS Bridge to Westcrest Park.   The longest contiguous stretch of greenbelt in the City lies within the space.   Currently, thanks to the efforts of Parks and other volunteer efforts, there are some sections of  finished trails but key destinations and neighborhoods are not connected and existing social trails are in poor shape.    At present,  Park’s planned trails development for the space are virtually complete.    This is your chance to show support for future trail development and to voice  concerns and ideas. A group from Delridge,  rTrip, made and incredible effort in trails planning over a decade ago but ran into one too many snags when working with Seattle Parks to succeed.  I’ve been told that the group then donated roughly $20K(?) to the Nature Consortium.  Another more recent grant proposal came from Puget Ridge and was presented to the County to connect Puget Ridge with the Duwamish trial and SSC area trails  but the grant was not awarded.    I hope that we might benefit from a well connected trails system-  One that offers hikes with of a range of difficulties and uses.  One that connects people within Delridge and on route to other destinations.  One that generates more use, making the area safer.  One that supports the work of the Nature Consortium  and continued movement towards a healthy forested space.    And one that reflects the desires of surrounding communities. Thanks for joining the conversation on the 30th.
