The year is 1943; the place, New York City. Dorothy Parker—famed for her presence at the legendary Algonquin Round Table—is in her hotel room. Viking Press is about to publish a collection of her poems and short stories, and she must make the selections before an editor shows up at her door. As she sorts through her works, she reminisces about her life: her famous friends (Lillian Hellman, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and especially, Ernest Hemingway), the wits of the Round Table (Alexander Woollcott, Robert Benchley, George S. Kaufman), the founding of The New Yorker, and her many loves and heartbreaks.

The Portable Dorothy Parker is the labor of love by playwright Annie Lux, director Lee Costello, and actress Margot Avery. In addition to its recent performances at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the play has been presented at festivals and venues around the United States, including the Ensemble Studio Theatre in New York City, the Adobe Rose Theatre in Santa Fe, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, South Carolina. This will be the play’s first performance in the Pacific Northwest, and we’re honored that Kenyon Hall has been chosen to host this marvelous production.

This is the type of tightly written, keenly directed, subtly performed piece that is a pleasure to breathe in.
