A committee of Seattle University students, a local non-profit and several individuals have been working for months to bring Moina Shaiq’s “Meet a Muslim” program to greater Seattle: January 17-23, 2018.

About “Meet A Muslim”

Moina Shaiq started “Meet A Muslim” as a casual gathering in response to the San Bernadino shootings of 2015. It was an attempt to reach out to people in her community who might be interested in learning more about Islam by directly asking questions. Surprisingly, about 100 people showed up and she realized that there were many people looking to understand more about Muslims but don’t know how to go about it.

In Shaiq’s presentations, she talks for 10 minutes, and then opens it up for questions. She says, “I will not be offended-they can ask me anything.” Shaiq said she started her program to educate people about her faith and culture while addressing people’s misconceptions and stereotypes. Moina explains the importance of the hijab (head scarf) or niqab (face covering), the differences between Sunnis and Shias, the rights of women in Islam, and what it’s like to be an American Muslim today.

In January, she will be meeting with a variety of community groups at restaurants, churches, colleges, middle/high schools, and mosques to deliver her signature “Meet A Muslim” program in Seattle. Some are private events, but at least nine scheduled events are open to the public. There are three ticketed events and the remaining public events are available for drop in (donations requested).
