The Esoterics will perform a concert based on the work of singular poets:

Rumi, Sophia Parnok, Oscar Wilde, and Sara Teasdale. The first of these “poetical” programs is a concert of music based on the verses of the 13th-century Sufi mystic, JALĀL AD-DĪN MUHAMMAD RŪMĪ, more simply known as RUMI.

March 12th 2016, 8:00 pm
Holy Rosary Catholic Church

For Rumi, music was a vehicle through which the devoted could connect with the divine, and in so doing,

the soul was both destroyed and resurrected at once. Central to Rumi’s poetry was tawhid, the longing to reunite with a beloved, either divine or mortal. Through his verse, Rumi’s philosophy advocated for the unlimited and peaceful tolerance of all creeds, kindness, charity, and a heightened awareness through love.

The pieces in this program come from a wide array of composers, and are as evocative as Rumi’s own verse:
whirling and wafting, suggesting order in chaos, clarity in the cloud, and the universal embrace of all. These works include:

Canticles of Rumi by the San Francisco composer Mark Winges
There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground by Twin-Cities composer J David Moore
Walk to the well (from the cycle _Of a turning _wheel) by Eastern Washington composer David Asplin
Song of the night by Philippine composer and 2009 POLYPHONOS winner Nilo Alcala
All day and night music (from the cycle Messages to myself) by Yale composer Christopher Theofanidis, and
Jāvdāni [Eternity] by The Esoterics’ founding director Eric Banks.
