Hunger and food insecurity are realities everywhere – even on college campuses. As a college education becomes less and less affordable, more students are forced to live on a shoestring budget. In recent years, this problem has prompted many campuses to establish food pantries to help students in need. One common side effect of poverty is food insecurity – not having reliable access to sufficient, nutritious food.

This year the Community Orchard of West Seattle is honored to partner with the South Seattle College Food Pantry and with the South Seattle College Permaculture Club! COWS is currently working towards and establishing means to help supplement nutritious food to this very important and local need. Our efforts this year will be focused on transitioning into a SSC Student lead Project.

We thank you for your continued interest and support of the Orchard and its mission. We look forward to your visit when out and about on a hike, visiting the campus, the Arboretum, the Chinese Garden or Wine Academy! We will be anxiously awaiting and preparing for the Seattle Farm School Berry Event! Mark your calendar! Kimberly Leeper, of Oasis Edible Naturescapes will be teaching this very informative and fun class. She has taught Intro to Food Forest at COWS once before and we appreciate all her hard work very much.

Kind Regards, Narcissa, Greg, Krista, LeAnn, Kayla and Bobby!
