12:51 PM: Do you have a ticket from last night’s Mega Millions drawing? Check it! We’ve just confirmed that a lottery ticket worth $157 million was sold in West Seattle. A spokesperson for Washington’s Lottery spokesperson that the 35th/Barton 7-11 sold the ticket with last night’s jackpot numbers for Mega Millions. The winner has not yet come forward – spokesperson Ann Marie Ricard tells us that any jackpot past $100 million has to be claimed at Lottery HQ in Olympia. We’ve just talked to the store owner, who says the lottery notified him about the ticket. Winning numbers are: 27-37-54-66-69 plus the Mega Ball 5.

ADDED 1:12 PM: Above, that’s store owner Sunny, who has been the 7-11 franchisee at 35th/Barton since the store opened a little over five years ago. He’s awaiting word on what he gets for selling the winning ticket, which by the way is worth $102 million cash if the winner takes a lump sum.

Meantime, the jackpot winner does have the right to remain anonymous, but the Lottery folks say they’ll let us know if s/he decides otherwise. (Is it you? editor@westseattleblog.com or 206-293-6302 whenever you’re ready to talk!)

9:54 PM: As pointed out in comments, regional media noted that retailers no longer get a share of the jackpot, per a budget measure passed by the Legislature last year, explained here.

    Awesome !

  • Seth March 9, 2016 (1:02 pm)

I believe that means the owner of the 7-11 also receives $1M for selling the ticket.  Big day for WS!

    • WSB March 9, 2016 (1:08 pm)

Seth – we talked to him and he wasn’t sure yet how much he gets.

  • AMD March 9, 2016 (1:04 pm)

    Congrats to the ticket holder!

And just in time for West Seattle garage sale day!

  • Sam-c March 9, 2016 (1:14 pm)

Awesome! Hope they know a good lawyer!    I always thought  Seattleites were  ‘above’ buying lotto tickets.  ;)

    • chemist March 9, 2016 (2:01 pm)

Well, that’s one way to handle the rising cost of housing.

  • Friend March 9, 2016 (1:17 pm)

That is so cool!  Congrats to the winner!

This is a happy story — it would only be happier if the winner was ME. Of course. : )

  • JG March 9, 2016 (2:19 pm)

BTW This place is the cleanest mini-mart I have EVER been it. Good work guys !

  • Garden nymph March 9, 2016 (2:39 pm)

Nice to think the winner may be from West Seattle, and a neighbor.  Happy news all the way around!  Congrats!

  • Westside45 March 9, 2016 (2:40 pm)

The store owner’s cut will help make up for all the nonsense he has to put up with every day. Good for him!

  • Alan March 9, 2016 (2:46 pm)

Apparently the 7-Eleven company takes a cut, which may be why he doesn’t know what his amount will be.

  • KM March 9, 2016 (2:48 pm)

This is SO COOL. Now I’m thinking about what I would do with the money, which is fun but not constructive :-) Back to work!

  • Big spenda March 9, 2016 (2:55 pm)

No way would I announce myself if I won.  Nooooooo way.  Congrats to whomever you are and retire in style.  :)

    • B March 9, 2016 (3:16 pm)

There are laws in some states requiring the winners to announce, not sure about WA.

  • JR March 9, 2016 (6:50 pm)

Yaaay, finally someone in our community! Hey lottery winner and Sunny, get a good financial planner and watch that grow.

  • Pat March 9, 2016 (7:33 pm)

News media states the State of WA no longer pays the outlet for jackpot winners. If this is true, Sunny gets bupkus. Bummer.

  • Franci March 9, 2016 (8:35 pm)

So I saw on the news tonight that in the state of Washington – the store doesn’t get any sort of commission for selling the winning ticket.   The owner of the store was very gracious on the news.    When did this change?  Does that mean the state is keeping the $$?   If I understood the newscast correctly its up to each state to decide if the selling store gets a commission or not.

    • WSB March 9, 2016 (8:46 pm)

      I’m inquiring about that.

  • strike em out kinney March 9, 2016 (8:48 pm)

Something tells me business will pick up at this place immensely.

  • Sue March 9, 2016 (8:51 pm)

Pretty sure the winner will give a ‘tip’ to Sunny :)….it’s not me but seems like the right thing to do. I’m just sure I must know someone, who knows someone, who knows someone who knows the winner!!! I’m excited for whomever it is but also a little afraid … : {….watch the woodwork!

    • WSB March 9, 2016 (9:54 pm)

And indeed, the no-cut-for-the-retailer is true. Action taken by the State Legislature last year. As announced: http://www.walottery.com/MediaCenter/MediaCenter.aspx?id=1760

      • sam-c March 10, 2016 (8:35 am)

Well, that’s lame State Legislature.  It’s not like retailers were taking a huge cut from the lottery income, were they?   The article says an additional $12 million to the state budget- that seems like a high estimate. oh well, sorry, 7-11

  • TheKing March 10, 2016 (4:16 am)

Life changer!!! Absolutely incredible a WS store sold that ticket. Like the old saying goes….you gotta be in it to win it. Congrats.

  • Tammy March 10, 2016 (7:31 am)

If the store owners dont get cut….   STOP SELLING THEM!!!! If you all get together and dont sell .       The lottery will have a CHANGE OF HEART IM SURE

  • newnative March 10, 2016 (8:25 am)

Did we all read the same thing?  It said “5%”.  The new law takes the progressive amount of higher wins and limits the amount retailers can receive.

    • WSB March 10, 2016 (8:34 am)

The 5 percent is a commission on the sale price of the ticket, not on the jackpot. So if this was a $2 ticket, the store owner got a 10-cent commission, and that’s regardless of whether it was a winning ticket or not. – TR

  • newnative March 10, 2016 (8:39 am)

oh, I still don’t see that.  But that’s terrible news for the neighborhood.

  • Westsider for life March 10, 2016 (9:47 am)

    G** D*** it !

They should change the rules of the lottery, to where IF you stopped and purchased tickets at a retail sales location and your tickets are still “live” at such point as when that retail seller is credited with having sold a $150-million winning ticket, you yourself should get, say, free lotto tickets for a year.

How many people will ever be around a store that even sells such a thing?  … let alone have (what for this we’re going to call) the common sense to have recently purchased lotto tickets from that store?

Now every freak and his mother will buy tickets THERE… thinking it means something…

(and I did so last Saturday evening, beFORE this big score happened)

    (pout)

  • E2 March 11, 2016 (10:31 am)

That’s insane. Does anyone know who it is that won?

  • jacqueline March 12, 2016 (8:17 pm)

Who ever won it could help me and give me and my family about 350,000.00 it would help out!

    • WSB March 12, 2016 (8:23 pm)

The winner hasn’t yet surfaced so far as I’ve heard, but we’ll be checking again with Washington’s Lottery next week …

      • Lisa March 17, 2016 (11:31 am)

Does anyone know when the ticket was sold?

Sorry, comment time is over.
