West Seattle is full of baseball talent! Another team has won a regional championship – as announced by West Seattle Baseball:
On Sunday, West Seattle Baseball‘s 11u all-star team team defeated the Spokane all-stars twice to win the PONY Northwest Regional Championship. As champions, West Seattle will represent the Northwest Region at PONY’s West Zone tournament in Walnut California beginning on Thursday. Victory in California leads to the PONY World Series in Virginia in August.
Above, from left to right, are: Jackson Sullivan, Cristian Eastey-Toledo, Joe Sullivan, Kellen Carr, Dominic Pangelinan, Aidan McCann, Isaiah Running, Reuben Gut, Isaac Ajeto, Isaac Renz, Max Debiec, Tom Gut, Will Gard, Peter Eastey. Not pictured: Nuh’kosi Roberson, Brandon Lick.
West Seattle’s tournament run also included victories over all-star teams from North Seattle, Maltby, Enumclaw, and South Sound. West Seattle fought through the loser’s bracket after an early loss to South Sound, 5-3. The rematch on Saturday night was one of the best baseball games that many parents have seen, featuring a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning by Isaac Ajeto to score Jackson Sullivan from second. Sullivan slid under the tag at the plate.
“It was hands-down the most exciting youth baseball game that I have seen,” said Marc McCann, parent and WS Baseball board member. “Of course, it helps to know each of these kids and to have watched them grow as people and players. It is a very special group.”
West Seattle Baseball was founded in 1958. It serves more than 500 players, ages 4-17, and their families each year. Programs include league play, all-star programs, summer developmental leagues, summer night sandlot games, winter training programs, and a variety of camps and clinics year-round. Follow the 11-y-o team in California on West Seattle Baseball’s Twitter feed: @westseabaseball.
The women’s-soccer team that’s played its home games in Seattle this summer has made it to the finals of the Northwest playoffs! Thanks to Jissy for the photo and first word that AC Seattle won its match tonight, 1-0, over Tualatin Hills United Soccer Club, to make it into the championship game, which will be played tomorrow (Sunday) night against Issaquah in Duvall. P.S.
Since our West Seattle Little League All-Stars update last night, one more district championship to report – Judy sent word that the Juniors won the District 7 tournament last night in Burien and are on their way to the state tournament starting July 20th in Spokane. And last night’s victory, she says, was a thriller: “They won 7 to 6 in the bottom of the 7th inning. They started their at-bat down 5 to 6 — so scored two runs to win.” The victory was over the home team, PacWest. Congratulations and good luck at state!
Go bowling on Sunday and help local students! The photo and announcement are from Jeanne Flohr at Seattle Lutheran High School, who :
The SLHS football team is holding their annual bowling fundraiser this Sunday, July 14, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the West Seattle Bowl. This is a great way to enjoy fellowship and fun with family and friends while supporting Saints athletics. Proceeds from the event will benefit the SLHS football and cheer programs. Cost is $20.00 for two games, including shoes. Bowling teams are welcome. For more information, please contact Football Coach Jeff Scott at 206-696-5333.
Exciting times for the West Seattle Little League All-Star teams in tournament play. Right now at Pac West in Burien, the WSLL 10-11 All-Stars are playing South Highline Nationals for a chance to advance to the District 7 semi-final game. Two other WSLL teams already have won their District 7 tournaments and are getting ready for state play:
Above, the 9-10 All-Stars; next, the 11-12 All-Stars:
Laurie Rasmussen shares the overview:
Both the 11-12 All Star team and the 9-10 All Star team won their respective divisions on Saturday to move on to the state competition beginning on July 13th. We are so proud of the boys of summer. Before the games began Saturday, with the 9-10 year old team on field one and the 11-12 year old team on field 2, the 11-12 year old team came over to field one to wish the younger team good luck.
Chris Frost from the 11-12 year old team told starting pitcher Nate Rasmussen, “Nate, I believe in you and know you can do it.” Rasmussen said it was very inspirational for him to hear those words from a player they all admire. It was a very special scene and had parents in tears with the sportsmanship of our WSLL boys.

Help make wishes come true – by getting out on the greens with the West Seattle Eagles Auxiliary, whose past Madam President Amy McGrath shares the invitation to this upcoming tournament:
Since 1995, The West Seattle Eagles Ladies Auxiliary has raised over $95,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska and Washington by holding various fundraisers. At three years of age and suffering from a brain tumor, Craig Wilkerson was granted his “wish” to drive a race car. He passed away shortly after his “wish” was granted, spurring his grandmother, Past Madam President Mary Lou Wilkerson, to start raising funds for the program. Now in its 16th year, the Craig Wilkerson Golf Tournament is our largest fundraiser of the year.
The tournament is open to everyone and will be held at Jefferson Golf Course Saturday, August 17th. Cost is $80 per golfer, if preregistered and paid by August 1. After August 1, cost is $85 per golfer. Deadline for entry is August 10. Entry fee includes dinner at the West Seattle Eagles after the tournament. We will also be holding a live and silent auction and have entertainment to follow dinner.
Here’s the printable entry form.
A number of West Seattleites traveled across the state to join in the Spokane Hoopfest last weekend, competing against more than 7,000 teams in the world’s largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Hoopfest, begun in 1990, is an annual tournament that draws players and fans of all ages from around the country. It takes place outdoors, covering an area of 42 city blocks in downtown Spokane.
After playing through thunderstorms on Saturday and 96-degree heat on Sunday, at least four young West Seattle teams became champions of their brackets:
Regus ICE: Jayce, Grace, and Lexi
Gray Wolves: Teagan, Bryce, and Jaxton
Golden Arches: Josh Meyer, John Ursino, Andrew Burggraff, and Tyler Lenzie
Lady Hawks: Samantha Scroggins, Lani Taylor, Alison Hadaway, and Sidney Proctor

Big day for Alki tomorrow – not just the Seafair Pirates Landing, but also, the championship games for the Little League District 7 All-Star tournaments that have been under way since last weekend at Bar-S Playfield. And, Laurie Rasmussen tells us, both teams from the hosting West Seattle Little League are in their respective championship games!
Both the 9-10 and 11-12 year old West Seattle Little League All Star teams will be playing tomorrow in the District 7 championship games beginning at 10:00 at Bar S fields.
*The 9-10 year old team will face the winner of tonight’s game, PAC West vs. South Highline National. The 9-10 year old team beat South Highline National on Wednesday night in extra innings by the score of 9-8.
*The 11-12 year old team will face the winner of tonight’s game, PAC West vs. Renton. The 11-12 year old team beat PAC West on Wednesday night in a shutout, with a score of 17-0.
Both teams go into the championship game undefeated in tournament play. The winner of the District 7 tournament will move on to the State tournament.
The 10-11 year old tournament and Juniors tournament begin tomorrow also at PAC West fields in Burien. We wish them luck! Go Westside!
And remember, you are welcome to go watch and cheer the players on. There’s more information, including scheduling, on the WSLL website.

Though football season is still a ways off, teams are getting ready, and Chief Sealth International High School‘s head coach Luther Carr III is inviting you to a tournament he’s excited about:
We are inviting the whole community to come out and support/watch some of the best high-school football teams in the Seattle area compete in our inaugural 7 on 7 Passing League Tournament. Free to the public. This event is an opportunity for the teams listed to work on their pass offense and pass defense. The line-up is very competitive. Top teams include: Mount Si, Shelton, Woodinville, Issaquah, Liberty, and of course our local favorite, Chief Sealth.
Also: Quincy Carter, QB for Kent-Meridian HS, is considered one of the best athletes in the state, and Kentwood is a perennial powerhouse. Ballard HS is coached by former Kennedy HS and NFL alum Joey Thomas. It will be a great day of football and fun.
This is all happening at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle, across from Sealth) 8 am-5 pm Saturday, July 13th.
(Jaden Sadis coming home, congratulated by Bowie Hichens, who was going up to bat)
Tomorrow night, you can go to Bar-S Playfield and cheer on either (or both) the West Seattle Little League teams playing in the 9-10 and 11-12 District 7 Tournament games that WSLL is hosting there all week. Both won this weekend; Laurie Rasmussen shares the wrapup of the 9-10 game, along with the photo above:
West Seattle Little League 9/10 All Stars team won their first tournament game Sunday night against Renton, 19-6. It was a close game in the heat of the day for both teams. However, in the fourth inning WSLL batted through the entire lineup and scored 6 runs. While in the fifth inning, things really heated up for Westside. With three players on base , Jaden Sadis hit a 3 RBI triple for Westside, followed by Dylan Mastroianni hitting a triple and finishing that inning up 19-6. Westside was able to hold off Renton in the bottom of the fifth inning with some great pitching by Jaden Sadis to end the game.
West Seattle hit through the line up twice in the game, every player on the team was on base at least once and had a total of 17 hits! Way to go, Westside. Next game is on Wednesday at Bar S fields at 6:00, playing South Highline National.
Also at 6 pm tomorrow, the WSLL 11-12 team plays Pac West at 6 pm, after winning their own game against Renton on Sunday, 13-12. Details are on the WSLL website, where you’ll find brackets and other info about the tournament as it continues through Saturday – everyone’s welcome to stop by and root for the young athletes playing their hearts out.
Coach Eric Olson shares the news about the team that just won a regional tournament:
The 8U All Stars from West Seattle Baseball defeated MTYAA to win the PONY NW Super Regional Tournament Sunday. These kids played great baseball despite the 97-degree heat. Top to bottom, every kid contributed both offensively and defensively over the weekend. This is definitely a special group of kids.
As seen in the photo Eric shared, they are:
Front Row: Jason Mai, Jing Gardner, Patrick Galvin, PJ Barton, Jack Cahill
Middle Row: Ethan Wyatt, Joel Clark, Chase Clifton, Brendan Johnson, Tyler Eisenhut, Mason Holmes, Brody Olson
Back Row: John Cahill, Eric Olson, Paul Barton
Congratulations!
Big weekend for baseball! First-round games today included WSLL’s 11/12 this morning, and 9/10 coming up at 4 pm – when we stopped by Bar-S about an hour ago, Renton and Rainier were on the field. It’s a bustling scene off the field too:

Chief Sealth Basketball and Life Skills Camp is in its second weeklong session of the summer, and Sealth coach Colin Slingsby shared photos while reporting that each of the first two weeks has hosted more than 130 campers. It’s not just about basketball, he reminds us:
More than 30 camp staff members consisting of current and former Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School students underwent hours of training to staff the camp and coach campers on basketball fundamentals, life skills, and academic success strategies.
Each day, campers take part in a classroom session where they hear from high school and college student coach speakers, and study under a curriculum rooted in learning social skills and academic success strategies. One of the longest standing and most recognized community-based programs at Sealth International High School (16 years running), the camp continues its success in bringing together youth in the community for a positive and fun learning environment and the chance to grow and compete on the court! This summer features two more sessions in August which still have space available- Camp Session #3 (August 12th-16th) and the brand-new Advanced Concepts Session (August 19th-23rd).
Registration information and other details are in this online brochure.
Coach Keffrey Fazio from West Seattle High School has announced that WSHS is offering a two-day basketball camp next month, no advance registration required – you can sign up at the door. It’s for 4th through 9th graders, girls and boys, 9 am-4 pm on Friday, July 19th, and 10 am-2 pm on Saturday, July 20th. More details on the official flyer, and online at wsbasketballboosters.com
One more baseball team to congratulate before we get too far past season’s end – Michele Wallace shares the photo of West Seattle Baseball‘s Red Sox after their big victory:
Congratulations to the Red Sox for winning their Bronco division at West Seattle Baseball. Their journey was an exciting one! Congrats to Josiah Clark, Gavin Doerr, Nicholas Golubiec, Reuben Gut, Hunter Hammington, Wyatt Henry, Tate Ingraham, Jake Jonson, Robert Salle, Ray Sifferman, Casey Sullivan, and Richie Wallace. Thank you, coaches Mark Golubiec and Steve Wallace, for a great season!

Congratulations on a great season!
For about a week, WSB Forum members have been discussing Alki Beach volleyball tournaments and a perception that they’re taking up more of the sandy beach than past summers. Many questions were asked about matters such as permits, parking, and rules; we asked Seattle Parks for answers, and have added the reply to the Forums thread, which you’ll find here – as the discussion continues. (One thing we learned from the Parks reply: The department publishes a regularly updated list of big events coming up at its parks citywide.)
Thanks to West Seattle Little League for sharing the photo of their victorious Juniors, who won the District 7 Tournament of Champions today in Renton, 4-3 over the Pac-West Angels. The team is coached by Mark Terao and Mark O’Neil; pitchers in the victory were starter Grayson O’Neil (through 5) and Jacob Terao (through the 7th). Shoutout to the other players, as listed by WSLL: Jax Cramer, Chris Drake, Blue James, Jackson Oehling, Trifon Papahronis, Elijah Phouangphet, Timmy Roach, Gage Rowlands, and also, though they couldn’t play today, Zach Gerhardt and Marcus Titialii. This comes just one week after the regular season ended for WSLL. Congratulations!
West Seattle’s newest soccer team is playing its first game of the season right now at Delridge Playfield. AC Seattle is part of the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL), with many of its players visiting from Italy (we put out the call last spring for home-stay families to host them). They’re playing the Spokane Shine tonight, and “shine” was the word for the early-evening sunshine as spectators took their “seats” on the slope over the field:
AC Seattle got off to a lead fast.
They’re doing play-by-play on Twitter, and as we get ready to hit “publish” on this story, AC-Seattle is leading Spokane 4-0. We’ll update when the game’s over; your next chance to see the team play is 7 pm Thursday (June 13) at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle), vs. Emerald City FC.
10:08 PM UPDATE: And that was the final score – AC Seattle 4, Spokane Shine 0.
P.S. The goalWA.net website has been covering AC Seattle as they got ready for the season, and published this sweet story Friday about some help from a young West Seattleite.

Meet the West Seattle Little League‘s champion teams, who received their trophies at the end-of-season barbecue celebration at Bar-S Playfield today: At left, the players and coaches from the Majors Division champion Orioles; at right, players and coaches from the Minors Division champion Dodgers. Thanks to Porter Hammer and Laurie Rasmussen for the photo; they also have shared information about and photos from the two teams’ respective big wins:
Back in March, we wrote about AC Seattle, a new women’s soccer team including athletes visiting for the summer from Italy. Somehow time got away from us – and their first game is almost here, we are reminded by e-mail that arrived a short time ago. 7:45 tonight, AC Seattle makes its WPSL debut against the Spokane Shine. (Read more about AC Seattle here.) Coached by Antonio Cincotta, AC Seattle invites fans to the game at Delridge Playfield (Delridge/Alaska); the team also plays Thursday night, vs. Emerald City FC at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). P.S. We’re checking on ticket info – prices, etc. – and will add it when we get a reply.
