With everything else happening today – there was post-season high-school football too. In one of three games involving local teams, West Seattle High School played a 4 pm game at Memorial Stadium downtown; final score, Lakeside 41, WSHS 14.

For some fall sports, the playoffs are just beginning. Golf is ahead of the game; the Metro League golf tournament was last week, reports parent Kristin Gibson, who says two West Seattle High School boys-varsity players finished in the top 23, Bailey Fuentes and Zach Gibson (shown above in the photo she shared), and qualified for the state tournament May 28-29 of next year at Tri-Mountain Golf Course in Ridgefield. She also reports that Tony Flores finished 37th and Joe Mitchell 45th. Congratulations to the WSHS golfers!

This week’s high-school football games are stretching across three days – the West Seattle HS Wildcats‘ homecoming game was Thursday (WSB coverage here), the Seattle Lutheran HS Saints‘ homecoming game is less than an hour away, and last night, the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks wrapped up their regular season with a win on the road – 28-6 over Ingraham. They finish third in the Metro League Sound Division, per our partners at The Seattle Times.

Last night’s varsity-volleyball match at West Seattle High School was special for two major reasons: First, it was senior night, honoring the WSHS players in our photo above – from left, Eastyn Baleto, Makenzie Harrison, Lisa Khuu, and Elena Solot. Second, it was a rematch with Chief Sealth International High School.

Both teams have had winning seasons; division-leading WSHS took this match, three games to one.

Game 1 went to the Wildcats, 25-14, as did games 2 (25-22) and 4 (25-14); the Seahawks took game 3, 25-14. The fourth and final game was close, with the lead seesawing, but WSHS pulled ahead by holding the serve and finishing the match. The Metro League tournament starts on Tuesday.

P.S. It’s WSHS Homecoming tonight – varsity football vs. Nathan Hale, 7 pm at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).

Last Saturday, the Huling Bowl … tomorrow, a rematch of division leaders in volleyball! Another West Seattle High School vs. Chief Sealth International High School game is coming up, and WSHS parent Laurie Sarver e-mailed us with an invitation/reminder for you to show up and support the schools’ athletes. Admission is free; it’s also Senior Night for four Wildcats players. The girls hit the court at 7 pm Wednesday night (October 23) in the WSHS gym (3000 California SW).

The annual Huling Bowl game – cross-peninsula high-school varsity football, West Seattle vs. Chief Sealth – is over, and for the second consecutive year after a long WSHS win streak, Sealth keeps the trophy, breaking the game open in the second half and winning 49-19. ORIGINAL REPORT, BEGINNING AT 7:04 PM: The big game is on – Chief Sealth Seahawks vs. West Seattle Wildcats, varsity football with the Huling Bowl trophy at stake.

We’ll be updating from West Seattle Stadium as it goes.

7:18 PM: First score of the game, with 4:43 left in the first quarter – Chief Sealth, touchdown by #7, LeeAndre Dickerson. Extra point is good, 7-0 CSIHS.

7:35 PM: First quarter’s over, score still Sealth 7, WSHS 0.

Lot of turnovers.

8:02 PM: Second touchdown in the game is also #7, LeeAndre Dickerson, for Sealth, seen in our Instagram clip:

No point after; score’s now 13-0 Sealth, with 2:26 left in the first half. The marching bands have left the stands to get ready for the halftime show.

8:14 PM: The Wildcats are on the board, with #12 Carter Golgart scoring a TD with :25 to go in the first half.

8:46 PM: Sealth #42, Marquise Givens (above), just scored a TD, with the point after by #34, Edgar Marquez. It’s now Seahawks 20, Wildcats 6, with 9:48 left in the third quarter.

8:49 PM: And after #59, Sam Tino, came up with the ball again for Sealth, #2, Brady Crane got a 45-yard TD on the reverse. Point after good. Now 27-6 Sealth with 9:26 to go in the third quarter.

9:00 PM: West Seattle answers with another touchdown by #12, Carter Golgart (above), but the 2-point conversion attempt failed. It’s now Sealth 27, WSHS 12 (two-point conversion failed), 5:33 left in 3rd quarter.

9:09 PM: It’s a night for scoring two TDs, at least for the three players between both teams who’ve had TDs so far. Now there’s another for Sealth by #42, Marquise Givens. It’s 36 CSIHS, 12 WSHS.

9:18 PM: Third quarter is over, still 36-12 Sealth. Meantime, thanks to CSIHS’s Twitter crew for informing us that #42 has the wrong name on the printed roster – those two TD’s are the work of Marquise Givens, and we’re editing the above updates to reflect that.

9:20 PM: Another Sealth TD with 10:18 to go in the game. #41, Allen Delker.

9:30 PM: With 7:23 to go, a quarterback-keeper TD by #12 Weston Reed. It’s now Sealth 49, WSHS 12.

9:36 PM: The Wildcats answer – West Seattle’s #5 Carter Mensing with a TD, 4:39 left in the game. 49-19 Sealth. Some spectators have left but a lot of dedicated fans remain. Last year, by the way, was the first time in memory that Sealth won the Huling Bowl – that was a close game (19-15). Two minutes now remain in this one.

A crosstown rematch for West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School girls-varsity soccer on Thursday afternoon at Hiawatha Playfield – and the division-leading Wildcats took the match. Sealth started strong and kept the pressure on, but couldn’t get a goal past WSHS keeper Sarah DuLong.

The Wildcats’ scoring came from Annie Murphy with two goals and Tess Beck, Lindsay Hage, and Kate Veenhuizen with one each.

Next opponents: WSHS hosts Franklin at 3:30 pm Thursday, Walt Hundley Playfield in High Point; Sealth hosts Blanchet at 4 pm Friday, Southwest Athletic Complex.

Who will win the Huling Bowl trophy this year (and local bragging rights)? The big game between West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School is this Saturday night (October 19th), 7 pm, hosted by WSHS at West Seattle Stadium – and we’ve just received word from WSHS activities director Christina Posten that they’re asking everyone coming to the game to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the West Seattle Food Bank. The fun goes beyond football – it begins with tailgating at 5:30 pm, and you’ll also see both schools’ marching bands in action, in a combined performance at halftime!

At West Seattle Stadium on Saturday night, Seattle Lutheran hosted La Conner, which returned home with the win, 48-0. Injuries had the Saints missing some of their veteran players for this game, and while they had some big defensive moments, scoring proved elusive. Next Saturday, Seattle Lutheran goes to Orcas Island for a 1:30 pm game.

The West Seattle High School girls-varsity soccer team keeps rolling on. Thanks again to Karin Beck for photos and an update on the latest game – a 2-0 win over Ingraham on Tuesday afternoon. Karin reports:

Katie DuLong and Lindsey Hage scored goals, and Sarah DuLong was the shutout keeper.

It was Senior Night as well as Homecoming for the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks as they hosted Franklin on Friday night at Southwest Athletic Complex, ending the night with a 62-34 win.

Homecoming royalty included LeeAndre Dickerson, who scored two TDs, and Allison Steele:

Also with TDs: Alloney Burris (two), Darren Camacho, Brady Crane, Allen Delker, Joe Kilgore, Weston Reed. Crane scored by going the length of the field on the first play. Kilgore had two important plays – running a Franklin fumble in for a touchdown, and late in the game intercepting a Franklin pass, ending Franklin’s best drive of the fourth quarter.

Sealth played the better defensive game.

In the third quarter, they stopped a Franklin drive inside the one-yard line and kept Franklin from getting a touchdown. That blew open what had been 20-20 tie at halftime and let Sealth go on to control the second half.

Next Friday, the Seahawks are on the road – 6 pm at Northeast Athletic Complex (10750 30th NE) vs. Nathan Hale.

At Southeast Athletic Complex Friday night, the Rainier Beach High School Vikings defeated the West Seattle High School Wildcats, 44-28.

The Vikings jumped out to a 6 – 0 lead a mere 23 seconds into the game when they ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. The Wildcats had Elijah Williams (#21) wrapped up in what looked like a tackle, but he had the presence of mind to lateral the ball to Michael McKnight (#10), who went the distance for Rainier Beach.

Despite that shaky start, the Wildcats managed to rally back with two touchdown runs by Carter Golgart (#12) and two 2-point conversions (a run by Fynniecko Glover, #22, and reception by Rob Harrelson, #17) to lead 16 to 12 at the half. Wildcats first half highlights also included an interception by Golgart, a fumble recovery by Jack Mohr (#35), and two blocked extra-point attempts.

Things were looking good for the visiting team, but the Viking offense roared to life in the second half. Rainier Beach racked up 32 unanswered points (including a 47-yard run by Elijah Williams #21) before West Seattle was able to respond.

Late heroics included a touchdown pass from quarterback Rob Harrelson (#17) to Raphael Jackson (#24), an onside kick recovered by Carter Mensing (#5), and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Rob Harrelson (#17) to Yonas Ambaye (#23).

West Seattle’s first home game is next Friday night (October 11th) at 7:00 pm, against Ingraham at Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).

Chief Sealth International High School‘s cheer squad and mascot kept spirits bright despite also being shut out tonight – a 70-0 loss to Bishop Blanchet at Southwest Athletic Complex.

It was the third shutout win for Blanchet in four games.

Next Friday night (October 4th), it’s Sealth’s homecoming game, vs. Franklin, again at SW Athletic Complex.

West Seattle High School fans arrived in style to cheer on their Wildcats, but unfortunately the Cleveland High School Eagles proved the better team, winning 26-0 tonight at Memorial Stadium downtown.

The Wildcats played tough defense, holding the Eagles to two scores in the first half while blocking both extra-point attempts, but the offense was unable to generate any points.

In the second half, Cleveland scored twice and made a two-point conversion.

Nevertheless, there were some highlights, including an interception by Bailey Wyatt (#50) of a ball jarred loose by Carter Golgart (#12) and fumble recovery by Eric West (#55).

On the offensive there were tough runs by Raphael “Do-E” Jackson (#24), Fynniecko Glover (#22), and Tre Steward (#21).

Next Friday night (October 4th, 7 pm), WSHS visits Rainier Beach at Southeast Athletic Complex.
