New West Seattle business: Second Gear Sports in Morgan Junction

Another new business is on the way to Morgan Junction. The space that opened when Aaron’s Bicycle Repair moved to White Center is being split in two, and one of the spaces will become Second Gear Sports, which bills itself as “West Seattle’s first sports/recreation consignment store … offering “high-quality, gently used sports/recreation gear.” West Seattle resident Mark Bremen is the owner; they’re hoping for a soft open around September 1st, and a grand opening later in the month. The official address will be 6529 California SW. In addition to consignment drop-offs at the storefront, they’re working on other logistics for “acquisitions” – stand by for an update on that.

West Seattle’s ‘Archer Addy’ #1 in state, #4 in nation, 9 years old

A local student has taken aim at archery fame – and seems to be right on target, in a big way. Her family shares this report and the accompanying photos:

West Seattle 9-year-old and Schmitz Park Elementary student Addison “Archer Addy” Nachtrieb placed 4th in the Nation at the US National Field Archery Championships, just two weeks after taking 1st in the State Target Archery Championships while setting a new state scoring record that hasn’t been broken since 2001!

Addy rose at 6 am every morning during the National Championships to practice for 45 minutes, then competed for 27 hours over 5 days, and shot 682 arrows through miles of hills in 80-degree weather in the hills just outside of Darrington, Washington. More than 350 archers from around the country made the trek to the Washington Cascades to compete for the National Cup. After days of shooting in Addy’s first Field Nationals Competition, the finals pitted her against a group of 11 year olds, Serena from Iowa, ranked 9th in the world and 5th in the nation; Tara from Arizona, ranked 4th in the nation; and Brianne from Montana, a two-time indoor and outdoor National archery champion.

Seafair Sunday: West Seattle side notes from the hydroplane pits

(This photo & next, by WSB’s Patrick Sand)
If you are going to – or are already at! – Lake Washington for Seafair‘s grand finale, the hydroplane races and air show, here are a few of the West Seattle side notes we’ve found so far. Above, it’s the Miss Beacon Plumbing, whose team again got a helping hand this year from South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) – actually more than one helping hand, as you’ll see in this story on the SSCC website. We visited the hydro pits in the early going this morning to get that photo while Miss BP was out on a testing run. The hydro didn’t come to the SSCC campus for work this year as it did last year, but SSCC students were out working on it elsewhere in the city earlier this week.

Meantime, also seen this morning in the Stan Sayres Pits – the Miss Fox Plumbing bears the logo of a West Seattle-based business, Sea-Way Marine:

And while we don’t know if he’s gotten a chance to drive today, we found out from our friends at My Edmonds News that West Seattle resident Jesse Robertson has been out on the course this weekend – see their story about him here.

P.S. Yet another reminder that the I-90 bridge closes 1:15-2:40 pm for the Patriots Team’s turn in the air show.

ADDED 2:30 PM: Another Fox Plumbing hydro bears the Sea-Way Marine logo – Jim Clark shares this Friday photo of the Formula 1 boat:

The Formula 1 finals are scheduled for 4:20 pm today, right before the H1 Unlimited finals – the full schedule is here.

 |   West Seattle news | WS & Sports

From West Seattle Soccer Club board member Stefan Persson:

We have partnered with Seattle Futsal to bring an August Futsal Clinic session to West Seattle.

Futsal is a fast paced and fun indoor version of soccer that places an emphasis on skill development and decision-making. It is a great complement to outdoor soccer.

The session will be held at the Madison Middle School Gym on each of the 4 Tuesday evenings in August. Registration is open to kids between U8-U13 (7 to 12 years old). The fee, which includes a Seattle Futsal T-shirt, is $65 and covers an hour-long clinic with professional training/instruction, followed by a short scrimmage. The clinic is open to individuals, so no need to register as a team. Capacity is limited and we recommend registering right away!

The registration link is on the Seattle Futsal web page.

Serevi Rugby camp in West Seattle: Welcome, new WSB sponsor

(8/14 note: To check whether a business is still a current WSB sponsor, please go here)

Looking for something new for the kid(s) to try this summer? Today we’re welcoming Serevi Rugby – which is hosting local camps, including one starting next Monday (July 22nd) in West Seattle – as a new WSB sponsor. Here’s what they would like you to know:

Rugby? For kids? Isn’t that pretty rough?

No.

Serevi Rugby is unique in that we run non-contact youth rugby camps for children ages 4 and up, including summer camps for boys and girls ages 7 – 12. The summer-camp curriculum is a blend of “traditional sports,” activities played in PE, and touch rugby. The twist, for all activities, is that kids use a rugby ball. For example, soccer becomes rugby soccer. Ultimate Frisbee becomes Ultimate Rugby. Sharks and Minnows becomes, well, Sharks and Minnows, but participants run with a rugby ball to practice evasive running. All the activities and games played develop not only rugby skills, but skills for common sport the athlete will play throughout the year.

The common terms you’ll hear from kids is that Serevi Rugby camps are fun, active and safe. These are the core components of all our activities, along with teamwork and sportsmanship.

What is rugby?

Rugby blends the passing of basketball, the evasive running of football, the accurate kicking of soccer, and the speed of track to form an incredibly fun and engaging team sport. The ultimate sport, rugby rejoins the Summer Olympic Games in 2016.

Serevi Rugby camps are ideal for kids who enjoy soccer, basketball, football, lacrosse, ultimate Frisbee, track, or for those who enjoy being active and trying something new.

Rugby is a game played across the nation and around the world. Nearly every culture and every country has embraced rugby. Like soccer, rugby is a global game that is ideal for our local youth.

Serevi Rugby has camps around the area – including one next week here in West Seattle. Scroll down this page for details.

We thank Serevi Rugby for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

Congratulations to West Seattle Baseball’s 11u All-Stars: Regional champions!

West Seattle is full of baseball talent! Another team has won a regional championship – as announced by West Seattle Baseball:

On Sunday, West Seattle Baseball‘s 11u all-star team team defeated the Spokane all-stars twice to win the PONY Northwest Regional Championship. As champions, West Seattle will represent the Northwest Region at PONY’s West Zone tournament in Walnut California beginning on Thursday. Victory in California leads to the PONY World Series in Virginia in August.

Above, from left to right, are: Jackson Sullivan, Cristian Eastey-Toledo, Joe Sullivan, Kellen Carr, Dominic Pangelinan, Aidan McCann, Isaiah Running, Reuben Gut, Isaac Ajeto, Isaac Renz, Max Debiec, Tom Gut, Will Gard, Peter Eastey. Not pictured: Nuh’kosi Roberson, Brandon Lick.

West Seattle’s tournament run also included victories over all-star teams from North Seattle, Maltby, Enumclaw, and South Sound. West Seattle fought through the loser’s bracket after an early loss to South Sound, 5-3. The rematch on Saturday night was one of the best baseball games that many parents have seen, featuring a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning by Isaac Ajeto to score Jackson Sullivan from second. Sullivan slid under the tag at the plate.

“It was hands-down the most exciting youth baseball game that I have seen,” said Marc McCann, parent and WS Baseball board member. “Of course, it helps to know each of these kids and to have watched them grow as people and players. It is a very special group.”

West Seattle Baseball was founded in 1958. It serves more than 500 players, ages 4-17, and their families each year. Programs include league play, all-star programs, summer developmental leagues, summer night sandlot games, winter training programs, and a variety of camps and clinics year-round. Follow the 11-y-o team in California on West Seattle Baseball’s Twitter feed: @westseabaseball.

Congratulations to AC-Seattle: Soccer team makes finals

The women’s-soccer team that’s played its home games in Seattle this summer has made it to the finals of the Northwest playoffs! Thanks to Jissy for the photo and first word that AC Seattle won its match tonight, 1-0, over Tualatin Hills United Soccer Club, to make it into the championship game, which will be played tomorrow (Sunday) night against Issaquah in Duvall. P.S.

Another championship team! West Seattle Little League Juniors

Since our West Seattle Little League All-Stars update last night, one more district championship to report – Judy sent word that the Juniors won the District 7 tournament last night in Burien and are on their way to the state tournament starting July 20th in Spokane. And last night’s victory, she says, was a thriller: “They won 7 to 6 in the bottom of the 7th inning. They started their at-bat down 5 to 6 — so scored two runs to win.” The victory was over the home team, PacWest. Congratulations and good luck at state!

West Seattle Little League All-Stars: 1 team in action tonight; 2 championship teams await state play

Exciting times for the West Seattle Little League All-Star teams in tournament play. Right now at Pac West in Burien, the WSLL 10-11 All-Stars are playing South Highline Nationals for a chance to advance to the District 7 semi-final game. Two other WSLL teams already have won their District 7 tournaments and are getting ready for state play:

Above, the 9-10 All-Stars; next, the 11-12 All-Stars:

Laurie Rasmussen shares the overview:

Both the 11-12 All Star team and the 9-10 All Star team won their respective divisions on Saturday to move on to the state competition beginning on July 13th. We are so proud of the boys of summer. Before the games began Saturday, with the 9-10 year old team on field one and the 11-12 year old team on field 2, the 11-12 year old team came over to field one to wish the younger team good luck.

Chris Frost from the 11-12 year old team told starting pitcher Nate Rasmussen, “Nate, I believe in you and know you can do it.” Rasmussen said it was very inspirational for him to hear those words from a player they all admire. It was a very special scene and had parents in tears with the sportsmanship of our WSLL boys.

Help make wishes come true – by getting out on the greens with the West Seattle Eagles Auxiliary, whose past Madam President Amy McGrath shares the invitation to this upcoming tournament:

Since 1995, The West Seattle Eagles Ladies Auxiliary has raised over $95,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska and Washington by holding various fundraisers. At three years of age and suffering from a brain tumor, Craig Wilkerson was granted his “wish” to drive a race car. He passed away shortly after his “wish” was granted, spurring his grandmother, Past Madam President Mary Lou Wilkerson, to start raising funds for the program. Now in its 16th year, the Craig Wilkerson Golf Tournament is our largest fundraiser of the year.

The tournament is open to everyone and will be held at Jefferson Golf Course Saturday, August 17th. Cost is $80 per golfer, if preregistered and paid by August 1. After August 1, cost is $85 per golfer. Deadline for entry is August 10. Entry fee includes dinner at the West Seattle Eagles after the tournament. We will also be holding a live and silent auction and have entertainment to follow dinner.

Here’s the printable entry form.

(Jaden Sadis coming home, congratulated by Bowie Hichens, who was going up to bat)
Tomorrow night, you can go to Bar-S Playfield and cheer on either (or both) the West Seattle Little League teams playing in the 9-10 and 11-12 District 7 Tournament games that WSLL is hosting there all week. Both won this weekend; Laurie Rasmussen shares the wrapup of the 9-10 game, along with the photo above:

West Seattle Little League 9/10 All Stars team won their first tournament game Sunday night against Renton, 19-6. It was a close game in the heat of the day for both teams. However, in the fourth inning WSLL batted through the entire lineup and scored 6 runs. While in the fifth inning, things really heated up for Westside. With three players on base , Jaden Sadis hit a 3 RBI triple for Westside, followed by Dylan Mastroianni hitting a triple and finishing that inning up 19-6. Westside was able to hold off Renton in the bottom of the fifth inning with some great pitching by Jaden Sadis to end the game.

West Seattle hit through the line up twice in the game, every player on the team was on base at least once and had a total of 17 hits! Way to go, Westside. Next game is on Wednesday at Bar S fields at 6:00, playing South Highline National.

Also at 6 pm tomorrow, the WSLL 11-12 team plays Pac West at 6 pm, after winning their own game against Renton on Sunday, 13-12. Details are on the WSLL website, where you’ll find brackets and other info about the tournament as it continues through Saturday – everyone’s welcome to stop by and root for the young athletes playing their hearts out.

Congratulations, West Seattle Baseball 8U All-Stars!

Coach Eric Olson shares the news about the team that just won a regional tournament:

The 8U All Stars from West Seattle Baseball defeated MTYAA to win the PONY NW Super Regional Tournament Sunday. These kids played great baseball despite the 97-degree heat. Top to bottom, every kid contributed both offensively and defensively over the weekend. This is definitely a special group of kids.

As seen in the photo Eric shared, they are:

Front Row: Jason Mai, Jing Gardner, Patrick Galvin, PJ Barton, Jack Cahill

Middle Row: Ethan Wyatt, Joel Clark, Chase Clifton, Brendan Johnson, Tyler Eisenhut, Mason Holmes, Brody Olson

Back Row: John Cahill, Eric Olson, Paul Barton

Congratulations!

West Seattle summer: 2nd busy session for Chief Sealth camp

Chief Sealth Basketball and Life Skills Camp is in its second weeklong session of the summer, and Sealth coach Colin Slingsby shared photos while reporting that each of the first two weeks has hosted more than 130 campers. It’s not just about basketball, he reminds us:

More than 30 camp staff members consisting of current and former Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School students underwent hours of training to staff the camp and coach campers on basketball fundamentals, life skills, and academic success strategies.

Each day, campers take part in a classroom session where they hear from high school and college student coach speakers, and study under a curriculum rooted in learning social skills and academic success strategies. One of the longest standing and most recognized community-based programs at Sealth International High School (16 years running), the camp continues its success in bringing together youth in the community for a positive and fun learning environment and the chance to grow and compete on the court! This summer features two more sessions in August which still have space available- Camp Session #3 (August 12th-16th) and the brand-new Advanced Concepts Session (August 19th-23rd).

Registration information and other details are in this online brochure.
