High-school baseball: West Seattle, Chief Sealth finish 2-game series
At Southwest Athletic Complex on Friday afternoon, the West Seattle High School varsity-baseball team completed a two-game sweep of Chief Sealth International High School with a 6-3 win, two days after an 8-3 victory. Greg Slader, who shared the photos, says WSHS “scored two runs in the first inning and kept adding runs almost every inning. Top of the batting order Cameron Slader and Morgan McCullough (top photo) had consecutive hits in the first and third inning to score four of West Seattle’s Six runs.
Jake Magera (above) pitched six innings. More game stats here. Next, Sealth travels to Bainbridge for a Monday afternoon game; WSHS plays Bishop Blanchet at Green Lake/Lower Woodlawn next Tuesday.
High-school baseball: Shutout wins for WSHS, Sealth
Shutouts for both West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School in their varsity-baseball games on Wednesday. First, the Wildcats:
Greg Slader shares the photo of Joe Mitchell, who he reports had three hits during a lopsided game against Franklin (the score is listed in The Times as 17-0): “Everyone got a chance to play as the rain was unable to spoil West Seattle’s game vs. the Quakers. Friday’s game is at Franklin before next week’s big games against Chief Sealth.”
Speaking of whom – the Seahawks hosted Rainier Beach, winning 10-0. Those two teams also have a rematch on Friday, 3:30 pm at Rainier Beach.
High-school soccer: 2nd Chief Sealth vs. West Seattle match of the year
Good fan turnout for Tuesday afternoon’s Chief Sealth International High School–West Seattle High School soccer rematch. Sealth’s Devin Offord had a cheering section (above) and scored the first of Sealth’s four goals, helping the Seahawks to a final score of 4-1 over the Wildcats.
Last time the two teams met, one month ago, WSHS won, 2-1.

Other scoring in Tuesday’s match at Southwest Athletic Complex: Alazar Gilay had WSHS’s lone goal; Luis Medina had two for Sealth, and the final one was by Yael Pina (who assisted on two of the three other Sealth goals).
Both are on the road for their next games: Sealth plays at Franklin, 3:30 pm Thursday; WSHS plays Cleveland, same time/day, at Van Asselt Playfield.

First, big thanks to those who answered our call for info on West Seattleites at the Boston Marathon. Ironically, the only entrant we knew about when we published our first story very, very early this morning wound up not running, we’ve learned – 20-year-old Matthew Haggerty had suffered a recent injury and wasn’t able to run the marathon.
So here’s who did, and how they did – First, Francine sent this report:
Martin de Vrieze, 18-year resident of West Seattle, finished the Boston Marathon today with a time of 3 hrs, 9 mins, 49 secs. He lived in Boston as a child and his father had run in the marathon in years past. Martin is also training for the Leadville 100, a 24-hr, 100 mile race in Leadville, Colorado this summer. We wish him the best!

Adrienne Salzwedel, a West Seattle resident, bib number 9154, finished the marathon with a time of 3:18:02! This is her second Boston Marathon. Last year was her first and she was luckily able to finish before the bombing occurred.

ORIGINAL REPORT, 1:13 AM: People coast to coast (and beyond) will no doubt be watching the Boston Marathon more closely than ever this morning, because of what happened a year ago. But it of course has long been an inspiring event all its own. More than 170 of this year’s runners list Seattle as their hometown. 
The youngest among them is from West Seattle – 20-year-old Matthew Haggerty – and this isn’t even his first time running the Boston Marathon; we reported on his previous run in 2012, when he was a senior at Seattle Lutheran High School (our story also noted his community-service projects). That year, he finished 227th out of more than 27,000 runners! Today, he’ll wear bib 363, according to info on the Boston Marathon website, and will be in the group starting at 7 am our time. You can track the race and runners online; the race website promises video streaming too. (Any other West Seattleites there? Please let us know!)

High-school sports: Baseball updates, including WSHS game today
Play ball! West Seattle High School‘s varsity-baseball team will do just that at their home field today, hosting Ingraham HS at Hiawatha after a road win against them on Wednesday:

The players won’t have to deal with one thing that beset Wednesday’s game – rain! Greg Slader reports that the game was tied 5-5 in the 4th when pitcher Alex Coats took over and held Ingraham scoreless the rest of the way. As for offense: “Cameron Slader‘s three hits got the offense going but none were more important than his walk in the seventh inning, as he scored when Alex Coats laid down a squeeze bunt for the go-ahead run. Three more outs and it was ‘game over’.” Go cheer on the Wildcats at Hiawatha this afternoon, 3:30 pm.
Also today: Chief Sealth International High School‘s varsity baseball team is on the road, playing Franklin HS at Rainier Playfield at 3:30 pm. … Seattle Lutheran High School‘s team is off until Monday night, when they’ll host Tacoma Baptist at Southwest Athletic Complex, 6:45 pm.

West Seattle High School‘s baseball team played at Hiawatha, losing to Seattle Prep 4-1 (game stats here). From Greg Slader:
Kevin Cuddy pitched three good innings and held the Panther hitters in check, except one inning got away from the Wildcats as Seattle Prep scored three runs. Three double plays by the Panthers erased too many West Seattle base runners. Cameron & Spencer’s back-to-back hits scored West Seattle’s only run.
The Wildcats’ next home game is at 3:30 pm Friday vs. Ingraham.
Chief Sealth International High School‘s baseball team was home on Monday afternoon too, falling to O’Dea at Southwest Athletic Complex, 10-0.

West Seattle run planned to remember, support those in Boston
After the Boston Marathon attack one year ago, West Seattleites ran to show support – and this year they’ll do it again. Just in from Lori McConnell of West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor), an invitation for you to join “a 3-mile run in memory of Boston’s bombing last year and to run in solidarity with our friends running the Boston Marathon.” It’s planned for 6:30 pm Monday, April 21st (one week from tomorrow); gather at WSR (northwest corner of California/Charlestown).
West Seattle Cup: You in? Registration open now; team captains’ applications due tomorrow
The West Seattle Cup soccer tournament/festival for local kids and families continues to take shape. We first mentioned it here in January – and now it’s just two months away. From organizer Terry Kegel:

West Seattle Baseball snaps their 3-year losing streak at Nathan Hale as the offense steps up and scores runs on clutch two-out hits. Ben Wexler threw a complete game on 73 pitches as the Defense made all the plays. Next game is Friday against Nathan Hale at Hiawatha, 3:30 pm.

A shutout in the rain for the West Seattle High School boys soccer team on Tuesday. Our team-supporter source shares the photo and news of the 1-0 Wildcats road win over Franklin, with the goal by Brian McMonigle, who also contributed defense along with Thomas Mensig and Connor Elder, plus, they report, goalie Akili Kasim with some great saves. West Seattle Soccer Club opens spring season: 67 Sunday games!

On fields all around West Seattle, Sunday was opening day of West Seattle Soccer Club‘s “World Cup” spring season – 67 games played on fields from Alki in the north to Roxhill in the south.

This was the first of eight Sundays in the season (excluding Easter Sunday and the Sunday before Memorial Day).
Sealth Basketball and Life Skills Camp: 2014 signup time!
Making summer plans? The 2014 edition of Sealth Basketball and Life Skills Camp is in registration mode, for students going into grades 2 through 9 next fall. From Coach Colin Slingsby:
We are excited to host our 17th annual summer of Sealth Basketball and Life Skills camp at Chief Sealth International High School and Denny International Middle School this summer.
Last year, we hosted more than 400 campers in our multiple sessions. The emphasis of our program is to teach the fundamentals of the game in part of a fun and competitive basketball experience, but also to emphasize the Life Skills necessary to be successful in school and life, both intellectually, and socially.
The camp is run by camp directors Colin Slingsby (Chief Sealth IHS Boys Head Coach) and Diallo Jackson (Denny IMS Boys Head Coach) with the help of many high school and college students/athletes who are put through a lengthy mentorship training in order to be prepared to work with our many campers.
While we enjoy teaching the game of basketball and providing a positive week on the court, we pride ourselves on our Life Skills curriculum which includes a classroom session daily, emphasizing the values of our program. Camp runs from 9 am-4 pm each day, and each camper will receive a camp T-shirt.
In addition, we are excited to offer an ‘Advanced Concepts’ session again this year (this session is geared toward campers 6th grade and up). A brochure with further information and registration forms are available on the Chief Sealth International High School website.

High-school baseball: West Seattle HS shuts out Rainier Beach

In the first of two consecutive games vs. Rainier Beach, West Seattle High School came away with a shutout win on Wednesday, 19-0. Greg Slader shares a photo and the summary (thank you!):
Senior pitcher Larry Jensen got his first varsity start on the mound as he delivered four shutout innings and the win as West Seattle Wildcats climb to a 2-1 league record. His fastball mixed with a crazy knuckleball was enough to keep the Viking hitters off balance.
The game was at RB, which visits Hiawatha to face the Wildcats again on Friday, 3:30 pm.
West Seattle sports: Water-polo athletes back from East-West Games

West Seattle was well-represented in the recent East West Championship Games of water polo, held in Salt Lake City. Cori Roed reports that daughter Nicole Roed, a Chief Sealth International High School junior who competed at the championships, was invited to try out for the 12th-grade U.S. national team in California in May. She says Nicole is coached by Olympian Alison Gregorka, from the U.S. team that won the silver medal in the 2008 Olympic Games. Cori also reports that the Pacific NW 10th graders’ team took first place at the East-West Games, with its members including West Seattleite Silia Bruchal, an Ingraham High School student. The Pacific NW 12th Graders took third place.
High-school soccer: WSHS on the road today after home win
West Seattle High School‘s soccer team is back on the field today, playing at Nathan Hale, after another win on Tuesday, 4-2 over visiting Cleveland HS. Our reader correspondent (who also shared the photo – thank you!) reports, “It started off rough with a downpour of rain for the first half. But after halftime, the Wildcats came back strong with the next two goals winning the game.” Here’s the scoring list. Today’s match is between early conference leaders – Hale and Westside both have two in-conference wins.

A wild “come from behind” game helps West Seattle get its first win of the season.
Lakeside ace pitcher and Stanford commit Andrew Summerville held the Wildcats to no hits thru Five innings as the Lions piled up four runs. But a sixth-inning walk and a failed pickle play got the Wildcats their first run. Things only got crazier from there as West Seattle scored two runs in the sixth inning and three runs in the bottom of the seventh for the improbable come-from-behind Victory.

An excited assistant coach Brian Tupper had this to say: “Crazy game, but that’s the way baseball is. You know you just got to keep grinding. That’s why we play all seven innings; it’s never over till it’s over.”
West Seattle is on the road for the next three games; next home game is April 4th vs. Rainier Beach.
