Two West Seattle High School swimmers will be going to the State Swimming Championships next Friday/Saturday at King County Aquatic Center. Gabby Carufel, junior (left), had a state qualifying time in the 100-yard backstroke of 1:01.77. Anne Williamson, senior (right), is competing in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.62. Go, Wildcats!!!

Chief Sealth International High School junior Daron Camacho (#11) scored the Seahawks’ lone touchdown in their final game of the season Friday night, a 28-6 loss to visiting White River (from Pierce County). That was in the second quarter, which is also when senior Alloney Burris (#5) intercepted a pass:

Sealth took momentum into the second half but White River stuck to a ground game that wore down the clock and helped them stay on top.

Highlights of Simon Iniguez‘s first season as head coach (3-7) included the third consecutive Huling Bowl victory over West Seattle HS and the homecoming victory over Franklin.

A show of support and solidarity, requested citywide: Chief Sealth International High School activities director Sarah Martin asked if we would share this, a request that originated with the district’s athletics department:

Because of the recent tragedies in the Western Washington community, we are asking ALL FANS attending any Seattle school sporting event this weekend to wear something WHITE signifying HOPE and HEALING. This includes fans, parents, students, administrators and staff attending any and all sports contests — This includes playoff games. It is at times like these that we must come together to support one another, even if we aren’t personally affected. We express our thoughts of healing by coming together as ONE and wearing WHITE as a symbol of hope for a better tomorrow.

Tomorrow marks one week since the school shooting that ended three young lives at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Snohomish County.

High-school football is now in the post-season, and West Seattle High School‘s athletic director Trevor Leopold tells WSB this morning that the Wildcats now have two more games set, following last Friday’s 52-12 victory over Franklin at Memorial Stadium (photo above). First, WSHS will visit Rainier Beach this Thursday (October 30th) at 7 pm. Then, they’ll be home on Saturday, November 8th, hosting Highline HS at 6 pm.

Rain or shine, it was time for the West Seattle Monster Dash this morning – and as our video shows, off they went, despite breezy, showery conditions. The Lincoln Park run/walk is a benefit for Cooperative Preschools. Organizer Milyssa Daigle (below) cheered on the (mostly) costumed participants:

…including ones young enough to be currently using the aforementioned preschools!

The littlest participants had their own “monster dashes” right after the main race.

Post-season play is getting closer for girls-varsity soccer. For West Seattle High School, two games remain in the regular season after they tied Garfield 2-2 at Walt Hundley Playfield Tuesday afternoon.

Both West Seattle goals were by Katie DuLong; here are the game stats.

This was the last home game in the regular season. Next up, the Wildcats play at Bainbridge on Thursday, 6:15 pm.

The socks said it all: The fight against breast cancer was in the spotlight along with the battle on the volleyball court when West Seattle High School hosted Chief Sealth International HS on Monday night.

Sealth went home with the win in a 3-0 shutout. But the battle for awareness and funding won too. Just ask West Seattle survivor and fundraiser extraordinaire Tracy Dart:

Back to the match – it was closer than the 3-0 score sounds – the games went 25-23, 25-22, 25-22.

This weekend’s local high-school football wrapped up with Seattle Lutheran‘s homecoming game Saturday afternoon at West Seattle Stadium. Rainier Christian went home with a 44-6 victory, but the Saints had some bright spots. They rallied late in the game, with their sole touchdown from #10 Roberto Duenaz (top photo), who ran back a Rainier Christian kickoff in the third quarter for the TD.

Also in the second half, quarterback #3 Isaiah Dowding-Albrecht (photo above) ran well; #88 Josh Meyer (photo below) had an interception and critical pass reception that jumpstarted the Saints offense:

Otherwise, Rainier Christian had a solid ground game that saw them score in the first minute of the game. Late in the game, Lutheran found some holes in their defense, but it was not enough. Ahead, our photos of the Saints’ homecoming royalty, plus, what’s next in the season:

7:33 PM: We’re at Southwest Athletic Complex, where the rain has stopped and the first quarter of the big game has just ended. West Seattle High School has scored first in the annual Huling Bowl football battle of crosstown rivals, WSHS 7, Chief Sealth International High School (the home team, though both are sharing this field these days) 0. More to come.

7:38 PM: Wildcats score fast in the second quarter, now leading 14-0 with 10:14 left until halftime.

#22 Fynniecko Glover has scored both TDs for WSHS. And a few minutes later – the rain has returned.

8 PM: Halftime, still WSHS 14, Sealth 0. Marching bands take the field!

It’s Senior Night for Sealth, so its players ran out through a “We (Heart) Our Seniors” banner held by the cheerleaders, wearing pink because it’s breast-cancer-awareness night. 8:39 PM: There’s a medic call over on the street north of the stadium. Don’t know yet what it’s for; we’re checking.

8:50 PM: Third quarter over, still 14-0 WSHS.

Meantime, the emergency situation outside the stadium involves a 29-year-old man hit by a car. Does not sound like life-threatening injuries. Very busy on Thistle tonight, with the orchestra concert across the street at Sealth and the game here. (Added: Police tell us the man was crossing the street at 27th/Thistle with a child, who is OK. They hadn’t yet figured out which way they were crossing.)

8:52 PM: Touchdown Sealth.

With the point-after kick good, it’s now WSHS 14, Sealth 7.

9:26 PM: Dramatic few minutes with turnovers and a penalty just led to a Sealth touchdown by #12 Weston Reed, followed by 2-point conversion.

It’s now Sealth 15, WSHS 14 – the Seahawks’ first lead of the game – with 4:12 left in the game.

Shortly thereafter, Sealth intercepted the ball.

9:37 PM: Field goal Sealth with :16 left. Score 18 CSIHS, 14 WSHS.

9:39 PM: And that’s the final score. Sealth wins third consecutive Huling Bowl.

Carrying the trophy triumphantly aloft, the players ran off the track, then came back to gather by the end zone. It’s their third win this season, the first season for head coach Simon Iniguez.

In tonight’s home game, West Seattle High School was held to one touchdown by visiting Cleveland (after the pre-kickoff handshakes, top photo), victorious in the 50-6 final. West Seattle’s only touchdown came in the fourth quarter when #85, sophomore Andrew Burggraff, ran the ball in. Both defenses came out strong.

But Cleveland held steadier, all game long. Note all the pink, for cancer awareness:

Next week, it’s WSHS vs. Chief Sealth IHS for the annual Huling Bowl.

That’ll be at 7 pm Friday, October 17th, at Southwest Athletic Complex.

In tonight’s road game, Chief Sealth International High School fell just one point short of what would have been its third victory of the season. At Northwest Athletic Complex, the Ingraham Rams topped the Seahawks, 28-27. Next Friday at 7 pm, it’s the annual Huling Bowl game between Sealth and West Seattle HS (whose results from tonight will be published here shortly) at Southwest Athletic Complex.

Chief Sealth International High School‘s defense was the star of their 47-6 homecoming win over Franklin last night at Southwest Athletic Complex. But the whole team emerged with energy – watch our short Instagram clip to the end:

Since it was homecoming, that was just the start of the festivities, which also featured the band, directed by Marcus Pimpleton:

They marched onto the field before the game right behind the cheer squad:

The game was already 27-0 by halftime, by the way. But backtracking to the start of play:

Starting with recovering a fumble (photo above) for the first score of the game, it was the defense who managed to hold Franklin to a single touchdown- a run back of the second-half kickoff. Among the Sealth players who scored TDs, #5 Alloney Burris:

Though a consistent ground game put up most of the points, Sealth’s passing game had some major gains against Franklin. #12 Weston Reed passed to #3 Jalonzo Smallwood for one of the Seahawks’ TDs. Here’s Reed in another play, with #30 Heriberto DeLuna:

In addition to the homecoming revelry, the night also brought birthday wishes for #59 Sam Tino:

This was the season’s second win for the Seahawks and head coach Simon Iniguez.

A road game is next up for Sealth, vs. Ingraham, 7 pm Friday at Northwest Athletic Complex.

One local varsity-football team played on the road Friday night – West Seattle High School. At Memorial Stadium downtown, Roosevelt blanked the Wildcats, 39-0. Next Friday, WSHS hosts Cleveland, 7 pm at Southwest Athletic Complex.
