Updates: West Seattle house fire, northwest of The Junction

(Scroll down for newest info)

(top photo added 5:15 pm, thanks to Patty, who called 911 after seeing the smoke – next photo was our 1st one in, thanks to LeeAnne, who saw it from blocks away)

ORIGINAL 4:33 PM REPORT: On our way to the 4500 block of 48th SW (map), where crews are on the scene of a house fire. More to come. We’re told at least one helicopter (likely TV news) is in the area – so if you’re wondering about the chopper, that’s what it’s about. 4:46 PM UPDATE: Still fighting the fire. No word yet if anyone hurt. We’re on scene. They’ve called for a few more engines. The scene is close to Ercolini Park. Still smoky. A public-information officer is on the way to gather details for us and other media crews. 4:55 PM: Still lots of smoke – this is as close as media is being allowed – the house you see is immediately south of the one with the fire:

No indication of any injuries. A medic unit is on scene, as is SOP for fires, but there’s no indication they’re treating anyone. 5:03 PM: Sarah sent this photo taken behind the house:

Our crew on the scene has checked out that same angle from an alley where you can see the back of the house – you can see a hole burned through the roof, but the smoke has stopped, so crews are making progress. The PIO has arrived so we should have more official info soon. 5:14 PM UPDATE: According to SFD’s Dana Vander Houwen, the house was empty – nobody was living there, no furnishings, so nobody hurt. Major damage to basement, attic, rear of house. (video added)

Investigators will work into the evening to figure out the cause.

(Thank you VERY much to EVERYONE who texted, called, tweeted, FB’d and e-mailed to let us know about this and/or share photos and info as we rolled out – we cover breaking news 24/7/365, and your tips are vital.)

ADDED 9:27 AM FRIDAY: Vander Houwen says investigators traced the fire to overheated electrical wiring, so it was ruled accidental, damage totaling $90,000. Also, we wanted to add one of the photos taken by Ilona Berzups showing the firefighters “behind the scenes,” so to speak – at one point more than 50 were on this scene, and the support work done to make sure they can safely do their job is always interesting to watch:

10/ House fire 48th Ave SW, West Seattle

Update: Car crashes through fence at 35th/Avalon

ORIGINAL 9:27 PM REPORT: This call was originally dispatched as a “heavy rescue” but has already been downgraded after crews reported nobody was trapped in a vehicle after all – according to the scanner, it’s a car over an embankment at 35th and Avalon; thanks to those who texted us the tip. We just arrived and the fire units have all cleared, which suggests no injuries; will have a photo of the car (and info on traffic effects, if any) shortly. 9:39 PM UPDATE: Photo added, courtesy Mike Heavey (who we’d just seen while covering the 34th District Democrats‘ meeting an hour ago). Meantime, WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports from the scene that police say the driver went through the fence – northbound side of the street, about 100 yards south of the stalled (and recently sold) development site – while swerving to avoid another vehicle. Nobody hurt; no traffic effects.

Update: Hazmat response wrapping up on Harbor Island

ORIGINAL 1:29 PM REPORT: A big Fire Department response is dealing with a hazmat situation on the north end of Harbor Island (13th SW/SW Florida), and while SFD spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen says no injuries are reported, scanner discussion indicates traffic trouble in the area. The situation involves a “substance leaking from a container” in a rail yard – no other details yet. 4:24 PM UPDATE: From SFD via Twitter: “Hazmat incident on Harbor Island is wrapping up. 3 units standing by until a contractor can come take care of the issue. No injuries.”

Update: Fire call a smoky scare

ORIGINAL REPORT, “FIRE IN SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENCE,” 4800 BLOCK 51ST: Not far from where we’re headquartered for the weekend at The Junction – everyone heard nearby Station 32 roar out – we’re on the way to the scene. 4:18 PM UPDATE: Just a scare. The self-cleaning oven somehow came on, residents returned to house full of smoke. No damage.

Update: Fight turns to shooting on north side of Lincoln Park

11:53 PM: There are reports of one victim and possibly one arrest. 47th and Fontanelle (map). 12:13 AM: Christopher Boffoli talked with police at the scene. They say two men were fighting. It escalated to shooting. 1 man was shot in the arm. Both have gone to the hospital (the second for beating injuries). 12:42 AM: See comments for additional info from people who live nearby. Adding photos from Christopher – showing that the scene was right at the north end of the park.

Christopher also reports that police told him the two men involved – estimated to be in their 30s – knew each other. Police also reported finding the gun, and “other belongings,” taking them as evidence.

ADDED 7:46 AM: Police have published this summary on SPD Blotter:

On July 1st, shortly after 11:00 PM, Southwest Precinct officers responded to reports of shots fired in the north end of Lincoln Park (near the 7300 Block of 47th Avenue SW). Officers arrived and located two men. One was attempting to hold down the other. After separating and detaining both men, officers learned that the two were together in the park when they began arguing. At some point the argument became physical, and the two began fighting. During the fight, the 35 year old suspect pulled out a handgun and fired several times, striking the 32 year old victim in his left arm. The Seattle Fire Department responded to treat the injuries to both men (suspect had been struck in the face several times during the altercation and had difficulty breathing). Both men were then transported to the hospital for additional treatment. The injuries are not considered life-threatening. AFter receiving treatment for his injuries, the suspect was booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Assault. Detectives will follow up with the investigation.

Update: SW Othello reopened after closure for gas-pipe break

ORIGINAL 2:05 PM REPORT: On our way to check out a report that some people might have had to leave their homes while authorities deal with a natural-gas leak at Othello/Vashon (map), just north of Solstice and Lincoln Parks. SW Othello is closed for much of the stretch between California and Fauntleroy. 2:16 PM: We’re at the scene – Fire Department’s still here, Puget Sound Energy has just arrived. Still working to find out exactly what happened; no indication of injuries. Just added a photo looking east toward the scene from across Fauntleroy. 2:26 PM: SFD says it’s a broken 2-inch pipe but otherwise, their crews are there as a “standard gas-leak response.” Media is not being allowed close enough for us to find out anything else, but there’s no indication this is affecting any more than a small area in this residential neighborhood. We’ll be checking back. 3:28 PM: Road still closed, new photo:

No new info at the scene but commenters below are shining some light from within the zone. 5:50 PM UPDATE: As we noted in comments, the street is open again. Puget Sound Energy confirms the break was caused by a contractor working at the scene and it only affected the service at the home where the work was being done.

West Seattle traffic alert: Crash at 26th/Roxbury

Westbound Roxbury is closed right now at 26th because of a crash involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. No other details yet, but we wanted to alert you to avoid the area. 4:24 PM UPDATE: It’s reopened. Police say the pedestrian was hit by a pickup truck; the injuries were not life-threatening, and the private ambulance you see in the photo took the victim to the hospital.

Update: Crash at 35th and Webster, 1 hurt

ORIGINAL 8:56 PM REPORT: “Automobile rescue” call at 35th and Webster. On the way. 9:09 PM: A car and truck collided and the car went into a pole on the northeast corner, according to Katie, who is at the scene. One person is hurt. Northbound 35th is blocked. 9:29 PM: Tow truck has arrived. The crash victim is in an ambulance but sitting up and talking with its crew. 10:44 PM: Adding photos, also courtesy of Katie. We have blurred the plate on the top one; this one shows a different angle, after rescuers cut the top off the car to get the driver out. Again, it does not appear he was seriously hurt; the truck driver appeared not to have been hurt at all, or at least nothing worse than minor.

Update: Assault with weapons call; Trenton reopened

ORIGINAL REPORT: Just arrived at the 29th/Trenton assault with weapons call. More shortly. Trenton is blocked eastbound -westbound traffic is still getting by. 7 PM UPDATE: Scene cleared quickly – someone was being transported in an ambulance (which generally means less-serious injuries than if someone was transported in an aid/medic unit – the officer at the scene said he had to follow the ambulance. We’ve got a call to the media unit looking for more details. Trenton is now back open both ways.

Semi goes off-road along West Marginal Way, takes out pole

Thanks to everybody who called/e-mailed about this one – we’re checking out the scene where a semi-truck went off the road on southbound West Marginal Way, just north of the LaFarge plant, and into the greenbelt, taking out a pole along the way. Heavy police response; no evidence of a fire/aid callout on the 911 log; one lane is blocked in each direction (see the photo below) but traffic IS getting by, both ways.

Updates: Bicycle-car crash on Admiral Way at West Seattle Bridge

(Scroll down for the latest – we’re still adding info and images)

ORIGINAL 8:32 AM REPORT: We’re on our way to a “heavy rescue” call where Admiral Way meets The Bridge – it’s a vehicle vs. bicyclist and Admiral is blocked in both directions, per the scanner. More as we get it. 8:37 AM: Adding a photo sent by Shauna Causey – the crew you see in the background is working to help the bicyclist, who was reportedly trapped under the vehicle. 8:52 AM: The bicyclist is out. We don’t know about their condition. This shot shows the rescuers and the raised vehicle (the patient is NOT in the shot):

WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand reports from the scene that an articulated bus got into trouble up the Admiral hill trying to turn around – it has been emptied and its passengers are now walking. (added 10:33 am, short clip showing them)

Again, stay away from Admiral north/west of The Bridge, since that’s where all this is unfolding. 9:04 AM: Briefing from authorities at the scene: The bicyclist, a man around 35-40, was coming down the Admiral hill, while the driver was going up – how the vehicle ended up over the bicyclist, is not yet clear. He’s been taken to Harborview Medical Center and was described as “relatively stable.” No word how long Admiral will be closed. 9:24 AM: They’re about to reopen an uphill lane – and the exit off the westbound bridge – but downhill will remain closed TFN; more investigators have just arrived. 9:32 AM: The northwest edge of the closure, by the way, is at the top of the hill at SW Olga (the pedestrian light). 10:19 AM: Heading back to the scene to check on the road. Meantime, some witnesses have posted in comments, including Susan, who writes:

I was ~6 cars behind the crash, here’s what I saw: I first noticed the bike because it had some type of bubble/windshield thing. I believe it was either in line with traffic or biking on the left side of the line of cars; I remember wondering if it was some type of small motorized vehicle because of the windscreen and its location in traffic. I saw the motorist turning left from Avalon and thought that the trajectory of car + bicycle/motorcycle thing didn’t look quite right. Then a car passed between me & the scene (in the opposite direction) blocking my view, and by the time it had passed the cyclist was under the car.

Rescuers had to cut up the bicycle as part of the extrication process – some of what was left can be seen in this photo:

ADDED 10:35 AM: Video of the earlier briefing from SFD Battalion Chief Phil Jose, who explained to us and other media at the scene how they got the bicyclist out, among other updates:

BOTTOM LINE (10:41 AM): To recap – a bicycle and car collided just before 8:30 am on Admiral Way by The Bridge. The bicyclist, a man described as 35-40, was trapped under the car; rescuers got him out, and he was described as “relatively stable” as he was rushed to the hospital. The car’s driver was not hurt. We will update Admiral’s traffic status shortly – en route back to see where things stand now. 11:22 AM: Admiral is still closed southbound/downhill from SW Olga to The Bridge; uphill, the outside lane remains open coming off The Bridge (etc.); investigators are still onscene. 11:40 AM: Also note: Route 56 is still rerouted; the detour from southbound Admiral atop the hill is putting a heavy load of traffic onto one-lane-each-way 35th SW north of Fauntleroy, so that is VERY slow going (we have just waited through about six lights to get the last few blocks to Fauntleroy. Also just got a call back from Harborview: The bicyclist is in serious condition, “headed to intensive care.” 12:58 PM: Admiral Way is now FULLY REOPENED, and the 56 is back to normal. 4:00 PM: We have published a separate followup with information from a comment regarding the bicyclist’s condition, plus SPD’s call for witnesses to get in touch with them – see that story here.

Update: Toppled truck by the West Seattle Bridge

Thanks to Shane Marr for that photo of a toppled truck in the Delridge/Spokane/West Marginal SW area (also mentioned by @DAlbrightVideo via Twitter, and James via Facebook.). We’re checking on injuries/circumstances. Here’s another angle from WestSide Baby‘s Nancy Woodland:

12:46 PM: Helen Fitzpatrick of the Seattle Fire Department says nobody was hurt. The truck will have to be righted before it’s towed, so avoid that area of West Marginal TFN (map).

2-vehicle crash flips truck on northbound 35th south of Avalon

ORIGINAL 11:06 PM REPORT: Traffic is getting by but slowly and no tow truck is here yet, police and fire on scene. Looks like at least one other vehicle involved. 11:10 PM: Police say 1 person was taken to the hospital but wasn’t seriously hurt. Tow truck just arrived. 11:30 PM: Tow crew has righted the truck. Traffic is light enough that it’s getting around. Debris on road so will take a while to clear here. 1:56 AM: Substituted above for what was a cameraphone photo, you can watch a 3-minute video sequence which includes our initial look at the scene followed by a condensed version of the three-step process needed to turn the truck back over – onto its side, then rotated, then back onto its wheels.

Updates: West Seattle power outage

ORIGINAL 3:16 PM REPORT: It’s not on the City Light hotline, but there’s an outage in parts of eastern West Seattle. We’re driving 35th, and lights are out north and south of Morgan, though Morgan itself is on. 3:26 PM: We are on Delridge, and lights are out Juneau to Trenton. 3:42 PM: Beware while driving – we saw a near-crash at Delridge/Orchard when someone didn’t stop. 3:53 PM: Some commenters say they are back on. City Light media just called us back, saying 6559 customers are/were affected, and tree trouble is blamed.

8:46 PM POSTSCRIPT: Just added a photo we took while stopped at Orchard/Delridge, covering the outage. City Light has a brief item on its Power Lines site, confirming the outage lasted about an hour, blaming it on a tree, and upping the total number of homes/businesses (“customers”) affected to almost 7,000. Thanks to everyone who tipped us off about this, and everyone who added info here via comments; first note was from Al at 30th/Thistle – many followed, via e-mail, text, Twitter and Facebook – we’re here for breaking news 24/7; all the ways to reach WSB are listed here.

Update: SUV collides with Metro Route 21 bus in Westwood

Thanks to the caller who let us know about this scene that turned more than a few heads at a busy intersection – an SUV collided with the back of the southbound Route 21 bus at 35th and Barton. Police at the scene say nobody appeared to have been seriously hurt; a Metro supervisor told us they’ll have a media liaison call with information; in the meantime, the right southbound lane was blocked, but traffic was getting around OK. 7:44 PM: We did hear from the aforementioned liaison, who said the SUV driver was cited for an “illegal lane change,” and confirmed that no one was hurt.

Big callout, small fire east of Morgan Junction

If you heard the sirens about an hour ago – here’s what it was all about: A “fire in residence” call that crews made short work of, in the 6500 block of 39th SW (map). Heading back from a visit to the Arroyos whale, Christopher Boffoli caught the callout and checked it out for WSB. As his photo shows, there was a fair amount of smoke, but the fire itself was relatively small, and nobody was hurt: He talked to one of the residents who was home when it started: “She said she heard a crackling sound coming from the kitchen and went up to find black smoke coming out from under the kitchen sink. She ran and got the neighbors who tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher. They said they thought they were successful but the fire sprang back to life. They’re not sure how the fire started but it was believed to have been electrical and possibly the garbage disposal.”

Update: KeyBank robbed in The Junction, 3rd time in 1 year

ORIGINAL 3:28 PM REPORT: From the scanner, and we’re on our way to find out more in person: There’s a report of a bank robbery in The Junction – the address checks to KeyBank at California/Alaska. 3:35 PM UPDATE: The description police are giving out so far: 35-year-old woman, white, about 5-4, slim, shoulder-length black hair, black glasses, black knit cap, black wool jacket, black scarf with red flowers and green leaves, put the money in a “B of A bag,” headed west on Alaska. At the scene, we’re seeing a “temporarily closed” sign on the bank door, with investigators inside.

(Photo by Christopher Boffoli, added 4:47 pm)
3:50 PM UPDATE: We’ve talked to police on the scene; no new description info but we did find out that the robber claimed to have a weapon, though none was actually seen. We’ll also be checking with the FBI to see if they’ll distribute a surveillance photo, as they often do after holdups. (Our archives show at least two holdups at this bank last year – April and August.) 5:03 PM NOTE: Got a question about a damaged police car “near the entrance to (The Bridge)” – according to the scanner watch at CentralDistrictNews.com, an officer crashed while rushing to help with the robbery response here. 8:38 PM: Casey sent a photo snapped while driving by that car:

Meantime, no new info in the search for the bank robber.

Update: 2-car crash, with one flipped, at 29th/Trenton

(Thanks to Fritz for sending the photo)
On our way to the “heavy rescue” call at 29th/Trenton (map). Details as soon as we have them. 6 PM UPDATE: This is a two-car crash, one a flipped red SUV, the other a damaged black Volvo station wagon, according to our crew on scene. Looks like responders are tending to at least two people. 6:17 PM UPDATE: Police say it looks like one of the vehicles may have run the stop sign; they’re also checking on whether alcohol played a role. Both victims are being taken to hospitals by private ambulance, and no major injuries are reported. A dog was in one of the cars and got out OK but was so upset it bit a firefighter’s hand; the firefighter was treated at the scene. Fire vehicles will be clearing but Trenton is closed at that spot until the wreckage is cleared.

8:28 PM: The scene is long since clear, but we are adding that photo of the dog, and the following video with general scenes from the incident, both by Christopher Boffoli:

Update: Car crashes into Westwood Village Bank of America, 2 hurt

ORIGINAL 11:48 AM REPORT OF “MAJOR HEAVY RESCUE”: We are on the way. We have two reports that a car has crashed into a bank. More from the scene shortly. 11:54 AM UPDATE: We’re there – a car has crashed into the Westwood Village Bank of America. 11:59 AM UPDATE: Looks like NO major injuries, so far. Unofficial word is that this was an accident, not something deliberate. Here’s another of our cameraphone photos from the scene:

12:08 PM UPDATE: Seattle Fire spokesperson Dana Vander Houwen has given a quick briefing at the scene. She says two people are being taken to the hospital to be checked out – one, a customer who was at the ATM and dove out of the way – another, a bank worker. Injuries are NOT believed to be major. As for the driver, no injuries reported at this point. The car already has been backed out of the bank:

12:28 PM UPDATE: In case you were wondering – the bank IS closed TFN because of this. (We’ll check back again later.) 12:53 PM: A couple photos from Christopher Boffoli – firefighters, and photojournalists, in action:

ADDED 2:37 PM: Video from Christopher, with what Vander Houwen told us at the scene:

Truck crash on West Marginal SW sends driver to hospital

Northbound West Marginal Way SW near Terminal 107 Park should be clear soon, now that a tow truck is moving that wrecked semi cab. Police tell us the semi hit a utility pole. Its driver has been taken to the hospital.

Update: Multiple-car crash on the West Seattle Bridge high-rise

9:21 PM: Thanks to those who’ve called/texted about this: The “medic response” on the 911 log for the westbound West Seattle Bridge, at the highrise, is reported to be a multiple-vehicle crash. No other details so far. 9:28 PM: Via Twitter, one person stuck in the backup, @bppalmer, says two westbound lanes are blocked. Also, WSB’er JoB relayed via JanS that it’s on the right side “just past the top before the Delridge exit” – at least one car appeared to have serious damage. 10:04 PM: Added photo; things should be clearing up – the fire presence at the scene has ended, according to the 911 log. No info at this point regarding injuries or cause. P.S. Here’s Christopher’s short video view – in the absence of working city traffic cameras – from the same vantage point as the photo above:

Update: 1 dead, 2 hurt in 2-vehicle head-on crash at 37th/Admiral

(cameraphone photo added 2:40 am)
ORIGINAL 2:13 AM REPORT: Thanks to the person who called to be sure we’d seen this on the 911 log – minutes after it appeared: Fire and police crews are working a “heavy rescue” call at 37th/Admiral (map), a crash with two vehicles involved, according to the scanner, with extrication(s) under way. We’re off to the scene to see what we can find out; Admiral is closed at that spot, so stay away.

2:34 AM UPDATE: Co-publisher Patrick is at the scene and describes it as a “huge” response of police and fire. Meantime, via the scanner here at HQ, we have just heard the first medical report on 2 victims – a 29-year-old man who got out of one of the vehicles on his own, injuries include a fracture. And authorities also have reported one person killed.

2:52 AM UPDATE: Police at the scene confirm that the total is 1 dead, 2 hurt, both going to the hospital. They tell us that it appears so far that the pickup truck was coming up the Admiral Way hill (northbound) while the SUV was going down the hill (southbound), at least one of the vehicles speeding, when the SUV crossed into the truck’s path, and they collided. Admiral is closed from Belvidere to Olga, and since this is a deadly crash, it’s likely to be closed for hours. (The last deadly crash in West Seattle was less than 2 weeks ago, a 1-car crash the night of March 9th on 16th SW.)

3:03 AM UPDATE: Authorities at the scene aren’t saying (and we’re not even certain if they yet know) anything about the gender or age of the person who was killed. Scanner information indicated the 2nd survivor, who like the 1st has been rushed to Harborview Medical Center, was a “middle-aged” man, whose injuries included fractures.

4 AM UPDATE: Adding our clip from the scene – same angle as the photo above, but gives you more context on exactly where it happened. This was shot from behind the yellow-tape line (the only other media photographer there while we were, from KING 5, was immediately to our left):

We’ll check back on Admiral’s status in a few hours; police will likely have an official writeup by then too.

9:40 AM UPDATE: The short item at SPDBlotter has two additional bits of information: The person who died was the SUV’s driver, while the two survivors were the driver and passenger in the pickup; also, police say alcohol may have been a factor as well as speed. No further information has been released about any of the three.

(Photo by David Rosen from SlickPix Photography, as rescuers worked to get one of the survivors out of the pickup)

Rollover crash at 8th SW/SW Roxbury

Thanks to David Rosen for the tip: He says a rollover crash has SW Roxbury blocked westbound at 8th SW (map), right on the Highland Park/White Center line. He says it doesn’t look like anybody’s going to the hospital; the driver is OK and being questioned by police.
