The day that began cloudy, rainy, and murky, ended spectacularly. Thanks to Mike B for the sunset photo. Tomorrow, the forecast promises, er, suggests, we’ll see sun again in the afternoon!

West Seattle Weather Watch: Great sunset, but tomorrow …

Thanks to WSB’er “Pigeonmom” for sharing that spectacular photo of tonight’s sunset. The forecast doesn’t offer much hope we’ll see a rerun tomorrow, but you never know!

Blazing sunset and a cool night; wet holiday weekend expected

That was the sunset view over the Olympic Mountains as seen from Beach Drive tonight, captured and sent to us by WSB’er David. There was a chill in the air tonight and some light breezes, but overall a pleasant night in West Seattle – which should continue tomorrow before giving way to a potentially rainy long holiday weekend.

West Seattle weather: Small slide on Marine View Drive

Thanks to those readers who called and texted about a small slide on the 9800 block of Marine View Drive. We responded quickly but SDOT already had the debris cleared to the side of the road by the time we arrived. It appeared to be more brush than mud. No damage was reported.

The rain seems to have let up a bit for now. But there’s more predicted throughout the rest of the day. We did find some slick streets around West Seattle this morning, as the rain has picked up some oil from the roadway. So do drive carefully.

Thanks to photographer Steve Shelton for his photo of the debris removal:

A change in the weather: Wet and windy Tuesday

Local forecaster Cliff Mass called it yesterday:

An unusually heavy rainfall event for August is going to strike our region during the next two days, and its coming from the west and northwest…

From the looks of things outside this morning, that has definitely started to happen. It’s expected to continue through tonight and tomorrow, and we’ll keep an eye on the weather’s impact on today’s events and happenings.

1:15 PM UPDATE: Alki Community Center’s picnic/concert IS definitely moving indoors.

Health alert: Wildfire smoke blamed for haze, pollution

Just noticed something you’ve probably noticed already if you’ve looked to the west or south – despite the bright sunshine, you can’t see the Olympics or Mount Rainier. If you suspected smoke from wildfires including the one that’s been visible at sunset the past two nights – you’re right. This just in from the state Ecology Department:

Smoke from several wildfires burning in Washington and British Columbia is spreading throughout the state.

That trend is expected to continue for a few days. Some clearing of hazy skies is expected later this week, possibly by Wednesday.

“Smoke from a wildfire can travel rapidly, affecting air quality hundreds of miles downwind from the fire’s location,” said Stu Clark, Air Quality Program manager for the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology). “Smoke pollutes the air you breathe and harms your health, especially if you have existing health conditions.”

The announcement, including advice for people sensitive to pollution, continues after the jump:Read More

West Seattle Weather Watch: Cooldown on the way

Just after sunset Sunday, smoke from the Mt. Hopper forest fire curved gently over the southern Olympics – a shadow of its show the night before. Still, it was almost a symbolic sight after another record-setting-heat day in our area – 96 degrees was the high at Sea-Tac Airport, according to this update from the Seattle Times (WSB partner), which also reports that meteorologists do not expect tomorrow’s record to fall – 98 degrees, in 1967 – tomorrow’s more likely to be in the low 90s. And after that, it’ll start moving back toward normal, according to the newest forecast.

West Seattle Weather Watch: Upper 90s? Might be time to swim

The early-morning forecast update says upper 90s are possible (revised from earlier envisionings of mid-90s). If you’re thinking a swim might be in order – here’s what the city offers in West Seattle: The Colman Pool schedule (outdoor) is here, Southwest Pool schedule (indoor) here, wading-pool schedule here.

West Seattle Weather Watch: The forecast, and a pet reminder

As of 5 pm, it’s 91 degrees at nearby Boeing Field, and the newest forecast still predicts 90s for the next two days. That’s led to a request that we share a reminder about pets – not just the oft-heard one about “don’t leave them in cars” (the Humane Society just reissued that one – read it here) – but also this one from the owner of one of the many missing, and missed, animals on the WSB Pets page:

Could you please post something … asking for people to look for lost animals in their garages and sheds? In this weather it could be fatal to the missing pets. … Still looking for mine. I hope I find her soon!

West Seattle Weather Watch: ‘Heat advisory’ starts noon tomorrow

(Thursday photo by Susan DuTemple)
By noon tomorrow, the fog from earlier in the week might seem like a particularly pleasant memory. The National Weather Service has called for an official “heat advisory” for noon tomorrow through 10 pm Monday. According to the newest forecast, we could be in the mid-90s tomorrow and Sunday, with only a bit of cooling the following three days. You know what this all means – time to haul out the “who has air conditioning” lists! These started a month ago during the last heat advisory. Here’s the one with A/C-equipped restaurants; here’s the (longer) list of “other places with A/C.”

ALSO: Note that tomorrow night, there are special events to cool you off – West Seattle Outdoor Movies (co-sponsored by WSB) in the courtyard by Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) features “Wayne’s World” at dusk – and tomorrow’s the last of three monthly movies presented by Coastal next to its Alki store (“Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle“).

After the golden sunlight and red sunset: Moon, or Mars?

From Christopher Boffoli – the rising red moon that followed Sunday’s amber sunlight and applause-worthy sunset. He says it’s “almost too dim to be photographed” and “looks more like Mars.” (If you missed earlier coverage – Cliff Mass has the best explanation.)

From golden sunlight to reddish sunset: Tonight’s photos

(Photo above added 11:54 pm, from DC in North Admiral; next photo is courtesy of Erik)

Thanks to everybody who’s sharing their photos of tonight’s sunset. As noted earlier (when we were talking about the “golden sunlight” that preceded it), this is attributed to smoke in the atmosphere from fires all over the region. Whatever the case, the sunset drew a crowd; we watched from Lowman Beach, where at least a dozen people had set up chairs to watch the sun slip behind the Olympics – and we heard one applaud after the last bit of pinkish red was gone.

West Seattle Weather Watch: Why the sunlight is truly golden

Now that we’ve got some late-afternoon sunshine, wondering why there’s a more-golden-than-usual cast to it? The Eastern Washington/B.C. wildfires, pointed out John on the WS Blog Facebook wall. He writes, “The recent outbreak of fires is saturating the atmosphere, and the Seattle area is over 50% saturation … the most recent update can be found on www.wunderground.com/wundermap – go to settings below and turn on ‘fire’.” This also has been written about this afternoon by famous forecaster Cliff Mass, who includes imagery to explain the phenomenon.

West Seattle scene: First sunset of the week

Thanks to Mike B for sharing his Monday sunset photo – tonight (Tuesday) might be even better, if the forecast comes true. (Sounds perfect for the West Seattle Hi-Yu Concert in the Park, featuring the WS Big Band and WS Volunteer Recognition Awards presentation, 7 pm on Hiawatha’s east lawn along Walnut south of Lander – see you there!)

West Seattle Weather Watch: Maybe a little less hot today

Overnight, David Hutchinson shared that photo of the Thursday afternoon crowd at Alki – and also overnight, the National Weather Service updated its forecast for this first day of West Seattle Summer Fest. The “heat advisory” remains in effect till 9 tonight, and the projected high could reach the low 90s. Fabled forecaster Cliff Mass, though, thinks it could be as much as 7 degrees below Thursday’s high, which was a recordsetting 95 at Sea-Tac Airport. Back at the beach, David noticed this:

Was it an algae bloom? He points out a possible one was reported here on WSB exactly a year ago, also during hot weather.

West Seattle Weather Watch: Heat advisory! Air-conditioning time

Till 9 tonight, we’re under a “heat advisory.” So – you’re probably looking for outdoor dining (by the way, Phoenecia just applied for a sidewalk-café permit) or air conditioning, for this sizzling evening. So we’re building two lists in the WSB Forums, and you’re invited to join in – go here for the “restaurants with A/C” discussion, go here for the “other places with A/C” discussion.

West Seattle Weather Watch: It’s officially recordbreaking heat

At 4 pm, Sea-Tac’s temperature was 89 degrees … breaking the old record of 88 (set in 1953). And the forecast still says it’ll be hotter tomorrow. Then Friday will cool a bit, according to the updated “special weather statement.”

West Seattle Weather Watch: Summer sunshine makes a splash

 |   Fun stuff to do | West Seattle news | West Seattle weather

Just in case you’re locked in an office somewhere and having trouble believing summer really and truly has arrived – here’s the scene at Hiawatha, where (along with Lincoln Park, as previewed here this morning) the wading pool is indeed open for serious splashing. The morning forecast update has downgraded tomorrow a bit, to “only” the 80s – but 90s are still possible for Thursday, and the “special weather statement” remains in effect.

West Seattle Weather Watch: Heat wave on the way

And the pendulum swings, big time. Tonight there’s a “special weather statement” out from the National Weather Service, since we’re suddenly looking at highs in the 90s for the second half of the week (in time for West Seattle Summer Fest, the Seafair Pirates’ Landing at Alki, the West Seattle Edible Garden Tour, among other events). Don’t believe it? Here’s the forecast! (Time to pull the fans up out of the basement … where just the other day we’d been resisting turning on the furnace …)

West Seattle summer scenes: Moon and fire

Some clouds have been moving in after an almost-truly-summery afternoon and evening – the temperature FINALLY broke 75, by far the latest date ever! – but the clouds enhanced the beautiful moon view above, by Christopher Boffoli, taken from The Junction. Just a bit earlier, over at Alki, Chas Redmond caught this scene:

We all know how much the forecast can fluctuate, but as of right now, looks like cloudy tomorrow, partly sunny Friday, which would be good news for the West Seattle Community Car Wash benefit for West Seattle Food Bank and World Vision‘s Haiti relief.

West Seattle Weather Watch: Beach time – but hurry!

Taking the long way home from the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce transportation briefing, we almost stopped for the classic crowded-on-Alki shot. But after all, West Seattle has many more beaches. So we continued on west and southwestward, and found this scene at uncrowded (only one person in sight) Weather Watch Park along Beach Drive (across from La Rustica). In the foreground, the roof of a makeshift driftwood structure – in the background, a ready-for-summer condo-building patio. Should still be nice when you get home from work – but then the “forecast discussion” suggests that may be it for a while!

(ADDED 3:17 PM: One activity along the West Seattle shore tonight – Alki Kayak Tours is hosting another Tuesday night standup-paddleboard demo/race event presented by sister business Mountain to Sound Outfitters. 6-8 pm, at Seacrest.)
