9:53 AM: Per scanner, a broken-down vehicle on the eastbound high bridge by Delridge might be there a while – the estimate for a tow is 45 minutes.

9:58 AM: SFD says the incident in the 1100 block of SW Spokane was a “small spill of hydrofluoric acid” and that it’s “finishing up.” One person was taken to the hospital “as a precaution.”

WEEKEND ALERT UPDATE: 99, I-5 closures both canceled

First WSDOT announced the I-5 work that would have closed the NB I-5 ramp to the West Seattle Bridge was postponed … now the Highway 99 work is off, too. So, NO West Seattle-affecting closures this weekend after all.

WEEKEND TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE: New information on NB 99 closure

Thanks to Jennifer for catching that the weekend northbound Highway 99 closure we mentioned yesterday had changed from Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights to “all weekend long.” But there’s now another change beyond the one she had spotted on the WSDOT site. While we were corresponding with spokesperson Laura Newborn about the change, she got word minutes ago that the NB 99closure will *only* extend from the West Seattle Bridge to Atlantic Street. That means the elevated Alaskan Way Viaduct itself, from the stadium zone northward, WILL remain open all weekend.

To recap:

*NB Highway 99 closed Friday night to early Monday, between West Seattle Bridge and Atlantic St.
*No change in NB I-5 closure – Offramp to West Seattle Bridge and Columbian Way will be closed 9 pm Friday-5 am Monday

TRAFFIC ALERT UPDATE: Ramp from NB I-5 to WB West Seattle Bridge to be closed next weekend; overnight NB 99 closures too

12:42 PM: Early-ish heads-up today from WSDOT: As the “Revive I-5” project continues on northbound I-5, another ramp closure will affect people heading to West Seattle next weekend. This time, WSDOT spokesperson Tom Pearce tells WSB, it will be a closure of the ramp *FROM northbound I-5, TO the westbound West Seattle Bridge* (and Columbian Way), so that the ramp can be repaved, between 9 pm Friday night and 5 am Monday morning (8/24-8/27). The ramps FROM the West Seattle Bridge will NOT be affected this time. Full details of this weekend’s closures will be out in a day or two.

2:21 PM: Thanks to commenter 44th Res for pointing out there’s a weekend 99 closure too. We found it here and confirmed with WSDOT that the closure is nightly, NB 99 between the West Seattle Bridge and Battery Street Tunnel, 9 pm-5 am Friday night (8/24-25), Saturday night (8/25-26), and Sunday night (8/26-27), with one exception: After the Saturday night Ed Sheeran concert at CenturyLink Field, “the northbound on-ramp from South Royal Brougham will temporarily open to traffic.”

New Arbor Heights sidewalks: SDOT says project is in ‘final stretch’

(WSB photo, taken during concrete pouring on Thursday)

The Arbor Heights sidewalk project along 35th SW between 100th and 106th is nearing completion, according to SDOT‘s newest update, sent this afternoon:

We’re in our final stretch of construction work! This week, we have accomplished the following:

*Our crews completed pouring concrete on all sidewalks on the west side of 35th Ave SW, between SW 100th St and SW 104th St

*We completed asphalt paving on the roadway against curb on the east side of 35th Ave SW, between SW 100th St and SW 102nd St

*We installed temporary striping (roadway markings) on 35th Ave SW

Next week, our crews will:

*Complete pouring concrete at curb corners and build ADA-compliant curb ramps on west side of 35th Ave SW (Please note this work was pushed back to next week due to limited concrete availability this week)

*Begin demolishing and pouring concrete at curb corners and build ADA-compliant curb ramps on east side of 35th Ave SW

This work will require maintaining existing closure of 35th Ave SW, between SW 100th St and SW 106th St during our work hours, 7 AM – 5 PM

In addition, eastbound traffic at the intersection of 35th Ave SW and SW 100th St will be intermittently closed next Monday, 8/20 between 9 AM – 5 PM. Vehicles traveling eastbound at this intersection between these hours, please do so at 35th Ave SW and SW Roxbury St. Flaggers will be on site to help direct traffic during this work.

Completed sidewalks will be accessible early next week. Pedestrians will be detoured to use sidewalk across the street during our curb ramp construction work.

Our crews will do their best to keep their equipment-staging footprint to a minimum and allow for more on-street parking available for impacted households to temporarily park their cars on the east side of the street and/or on the side streets. Please note that we will reopen 35th Ave SW at the end of each work day.

8:36 AM: All lanes of 35th/Avalon are now clear.

UPDATE: Crash at Harbor/Spokane

10:14 PM: Complicating the post-SPF30 outbound traffic from Alki, there’s a crash at Harbor and Spokane. We don’t know details but SDOT says it’s blocking southbound lanes.

10:23 PN: Just added a framegrab from the SDOT traffic camera at that intersection. SDOT now says “westbound” lanes are blocked – toward Alki rather than away from it.

11:26 PM: SDOT says all lanes are clear.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Beacon Hill crash affecting one detour to NB I-5

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

(Added: Photo from Josh)

Thanks to the texter who points out that if you are headed eastbound on the bridge and need a detour because the ramp to NB I-5 is closed, you need to know about a crash on Beacon Hill. It’s at Spokane/Columbian and the texter says it’s a jackknifed tanker. Until there’s word it’s cleared, you’ll want to use 1st or 4th to get off the bridge instead.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Friday watch, plus alerts and updates

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

7:15 AM: No incidents reported so far in/from West Seattle, but take note of the White Center/North Burien power outage if you’re headed that way.

TRANSIT ALERT: The 6:44 am Route 37 didn’t run today, per Metro.

STADIUM ZONE TONIGHT: Second Pearl Jam #TheHomeShows concert, 7:30 pm at Safeco Field.

I-5 LANE/RAMP CLOSURES THIS WEEKEND: Tonight until Monday morning, here’s what’s planned for northbound I-5. The eastbound West Seattle Bridge ramp to NB I-5 will be closed and you will see the 4th Avenue exit signed as a detour, WSDOT points out.

SPF30: Saturday’s big free music festival, noon-10 pm, will include road closures, detailed here with other transit/transportation notes. We’ll have at least one more preview on WSB today, and as part of it are pursuing answers to some questions from readers regarding that plan.

7:23 AM: Though we haven’t heard of a road closure, we’d advise avoiding southbound Harbor Avenue SW in the vicinity of this standoff, as more emergency resources are being sent that way.

7:35 AM: Now they’re blocking traffic both ways in that area – both north/westbound on Harbor at the bridge, and south/eastbound before you get to the scene.

7:48 AM: Scanner: “Pedestrian on eastbound West Seattle Bridge from Fauntleroy … walking against traffic along the median.” Police are being dispatched.

8:41 AM: Updates – White Center power outage is over. Harbor Avenue standoff is not – street’s still closed (bicycle/pedestrian path too, notes a commenter) and the Water Taxi shuttle is rerouted.

9:23 AM: Harbor Avenue standoff continues – still covering here.

10:22 AM: Not over yet.
