FOLLOWUP: 4th Avenue SW reopens after month-long closure

(WSB photo, looking south toward 4th SW from Roxbury)

4th Avenue SW, closed for a month of work south of SW Roxbury, is open again. We just noticed it while passing by – and construction manager Joshua Bowen with the King County Housing Authority just sent the notice confirming most of the work is complete:

Following the successful construction of 4th Avenue SW, we are reopening the road! Please note
that there will be no parking for the first few weeks as we complete landscaping, concrete detailing, and pedestrian lighting. Also, we will need to close the road briefly to complete a few details in the roadway (painting/striping). Thank you for your patience as we beautify your road.

This road improvement of 1,300 feet of 4th Avenue SW in the Greenbridge Community of the White Center neighborhood includes surface water runoff water quality upgrades, storm water infrastructure, channelization, signage, traffic calming measures, improved pedestrian crossings, street paving, pedestrian lighting, and landscaping.

The project was originally planned for earlier this spring but had to be delayed to a late-April start.

AVALON/35TH PROJECT: SDOT’s update on what’s happening and what’s next, including first water shutoff

That’s the newest map from SDOT, accompanying the weekly update just in for the Avalon/35th repaving-and-more project:

Work on SW Avalon Way from SW Yancy St to SW Genesee St (Zone B) is substantially complete until final paving! Please stay tuned for updates on the final paving schedule for Zone B.

Crews continue to work on base repairs on the west side of SW Avalon Way from SW Manning St to SW Charlestown St (Zone A). Additional base paving is scheduled for the week of June 3. During construction, we will maintain access to SW Orleans St.

Current side street closures in zone A:

SW Manning St is temporarily closed between 30th Ave SW and SW Avalon Way

SW Charlestown St is closed at SW Avalon Way to complete drainage and water main work and eventual preparation for paving. Local access will be maintained to the alley (30th Ave SW). Businesses are open. Follow signs for Avalon Business District parking off SW Avalon Way.

SW Andover St will be closed at SW Avalon Way as soon as Monday, June 3 and up to a few weeks. This will allow crews to conduct utility work and pavement reconstruction. Crews will need to work across multiple lanes of traffic in the intersection for a few weeks. We will continue to maintain one lane in each direction on SW Avalon Way.

Crews continue to trench and lay the new water main on the east side of 35th Ave SW from SW Avalon Way to SW Alaska St (Zone E). We will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on 35th Ave SW between Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Alaska St through approximately November 2019.

Our first water shutdown will take place the evening of June 4 from 9 PM to 6 AM. If you are impacted by this shutdown, SPU should have notified you with a door hanger or flyer. If you have questions about, or experience problems with, your water service, contact SPU’s 24/7 Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800.

ROAD WORK/TRAFFIC ALERTS: Avalon, Beach Drive, Delridge

As we head for a new week, a few things you need to know:

AVALON SHIFT: Reminder from Friday’s update on the Avalon/35th/Alaska project – this starts tomorrow:

Crews are scheduled to begin work on the west side of SW Avalon Way from SW Manning St to SW Charlestown St (Zone A) on Monday, May 20. During construction, we will maintain access to SW Orleans St. SW Manning St will be closed starting Monday through the next few weeks. Local access will be maintained to the alley.

For the rest of what’s up, read the full update here.

SPEED HUMPS: Looks like the Beach Drive speed humps, which SDOT promised to replace after removing them in January, are about to return. The curbs adjacent to those specific sections of Beach Drive (south of Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook) are signed as “no parking” for work starting tomorrow. Just before the repaving work north of the park last month, SDOT noted it was working to schedule the replacement.

Also an alert if you haven’t encountered this already:

NO (BIG) TRUCKS: Two readers noted there’s new signage attempting to keep big trucks from trying to use the narrow route where there’s a sharp curve at 20th/21st east of Delridge. You might recall that a truck got stuck for hours there recently. There’s new signage on the east end of the route too.

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

If you’re headed toward downtown, you won’t be able to take NB 99 for a whlle – it’s blocked north of the West Seattle Bridge by a rollover crash. At least one person is being taken to the hospital.

Avalon, 35th SW road work: Here’s what’s happening next

3:13 PM: If you use Avalon and/or 35th SW between Alaska and Avalon, here’s what you need to know about what’s happening next as road work continues:

The key points are on the map above. Below are SDOT’s newest update with the details, as well as some Q&A:

We are excavating and rebuilding the road on the west half SW Avalon Way in Zone B! Crews are continuing to work on the west side of SW Avalon Way from SW Yancy St to SW Genesee St (Zone B).

The west side of SW Genesee St at SW Avalon Way is scheduled to be closed starting this Wednesday, May 22 through Wednesday, May 29. This will allow crews to conduct utility work and pavement reconstruction. Similar to the previous closure on the east side of the intersection, crews will need to work across multiple lanes of traffic in the intersection for a few weeks. We will continue to maintain one lane in each direction on SW Avalon Way.

Crews will begin trenching to lay new water main on the east side of 35th Ave SW from SW Avalon Way to SW Alaska St (Zone E). We will maintain one lane of traffic in each direction on 35th Ave SW between Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Alaska St through approximately November 2019. See below for more information about what to expect.

SW Alaska St is scheduled to be closed to 35th Ave SW starting Saturday, May 18 at 5 AM and could open as soon as Monday, May 20 at 6 AM. This will allow crews to conduct maintenance on the water main.

Businesses are open! Please continue to visit businesses on 35th Ave SW and SW Avalon Way during construction. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.

Things we’ve heard from the community

Each week, we’ll plan to address a few common questions we’ve heard from your neighbors.

When will work on 35th Ave SW be completed? Can anything be done about commuting times?

Work on 35th Ave SW (Zone E) is anticipated to continue through November 2019. Work on 35th Ave SW takes more time as we are putting a new water main underneath the road and completely rebuilding the road. Our team has been monitoring left turns at the intersection of SW Avalon Way and 35th Ave SW after hearing about delays from the community. We are checking with our traffic operations group to see if we can adjust signal timing at the northbound left turn to see if this will help eliminate delays. Thank you for your patience as we strive to complete this work safely and efficiently!

Will my driveway be impacted?

In order for us to rebuild the road, we need to completely remove the current roadway and repour it with concrete or pave it with asphalt. We will need to temporarily close driveway access in order to pour or pave and allow the materials to cure. We will provide advance notice of this work. Please notify us if you need accessibility assistance.

What do I do if I have questions about the water main work and upcoming shutoffs?

If you have any questions about water main work, if there is an issue with your water, or your water is shut off without warning, you can call Seattle Public Utilities emergency line at 206-386-1800 24/7. SPU will notify you of any project related water shut offs at least a week in advance.

The overall project, expected to be complete next summer, is repaving/reconfiguring all of Avalon Way and repaving/rebuilding 35th SW between SW Alaska and Avalon (with water-main replacement) as well as repaving a block of SW Alaska west of 35th.

4:30 PM: Metro has published reroutes for Route 50, RapidRide C Line, and Water Taxi Shuttle 773 starting early tomorrow morning because of the weekend Alaska-at-35th closure.
