Looking ahead to next weekend – you might want to set some time aside to visit the Seattle Chinese Garden on Puget Ridge, as the 4th annual Peony and Bamboo Festival will be happening both days, 10 am-4 pm Saturday and Sunday (April 16th and 17th):

This family-friendly event, celebrating two of China’s horticultural treasures, kicks off with a rousing lion dance at 11 am on Saturday. A festival centerpiece is the tree-peony display garden with more than 400 plants of two dozen varieties from Luoyang, China’s peony capital for more than 1,500 years.

Festival activities include talks and demonstrations on plant care, plant sales including unusual varieties of bamboo from specialty growers in Washington and Oregon, cultural entertainment and Chinese artist painting demonstrations, and sale of art and craft items. Plus, Chinese food booths will offer a variety of dishes and snacks. Visit the SCG website Tuesday for the schedule of activities.

Suggested adult donation is $5.

Co-sponsoring next weekend’s festival are the American Peony Art and Culture Association and American Bamboo Society Northwest Chapter. To reach the Chinese Garden, take the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) north entrance at 6000 16th SW.

Have books you just don’t need? Donate them to the upcoming Sanislo Elementary book sale! Sanislo PTA parent volunteer Lena Charles sent the request:

We are requesting book donations from the community to support our annual fundraiser for the 4th graders here at Sanislo. It is their
annual trip to Camp Sealth on Vashon Island and it’s a 3-day jampacked science field trip that is super fun for them.

Our book sale is scheduled for April 2, 10 am to 2 pm, to alleviate the overall cost to our local families. We are a diverse community with families facing all different challenges; I have been here with my daughter for 4 years, rallying for these children. Donations can be dropped off directly at the school or if you need pickup, the quickest way to get a hold of me is via text, 360-771-3590.

Even if you don’t have books to give for the sale, set a reminder for the date and go browse/buy to help with the camp fund. Sanislo is at 1812 SW Myrtle on Puget Ridge. (This will of course be in our West Seattle Event Calendar, too.)

West Seattle Crime Watch: Shooting investigation

Police were in the 6500 block of 18th SW on Puget Ridge earlier tonight to investigate a shooting. It wasn’t the standard massive fire/police response because the shooting had happened sometime earlier and the victim was no longer at the house. We haven’t been able to obtain details yet, but emergency-radio discussions indicated they were following up on the case of a woman who was dropped off at Harborview Medical Center around 5:30 pm, reported to be suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg, and she has some association with the house where police was following up. We’ll update with anything more we find out, even if it’s not until tomorrow.

Overall, it’s been a busy night for police – two other sizable responses we’ve been asked about include one on 35th and Cloverdale, where police were investigating a report of someone screaming, and found a person having a mental-health crisis, and an investigation at a house near Delridge and 17th, with a report of items being carried out of what was described as a vacant house.

Aviation-education history arrives at South Seattle College

The Aviation Maintenance Technology program at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) has been groundbreaking in a variety of ways. Now, a new one: It’s the only school in our state with a 777 engine. Boeing has donated a Pratt and Whitney 777 engine to the program, and you’re invited to see it during an open house Monday afternoon (February 29th) at SSC’s main campus on Puget Ridge. SSC says this is the first engine that Boeing ever has donated to a college, and it means the AMT program now has 13 aircraft and 70 engines. Program alumni and SSC president Gary Oertli will be there for Monday’s event, with tours of the aviation-program facility 1-2 pm and a reception at the Northwest Wine Academy next door, 2-3 pm. (The Aviation building is AMT on this campus map.)

In honor of Parent Education Month, the South Seattle College Cooperative Preschools program is working with the Northwest Wine Academy to host an event with complimentary wine tasting and appetizers plus a parenting seminar, “Tell Me What to Say,” this Wednesday (February 24), 6:30 pm. Here’s what it’s about:

You talk … and talk …to your children, but are your words teaching your children what you want them to learn? Join us in exploring more effective ways to talk to your children and spend a fun, lively evening practicing “what to say” in real life situations.

A WSB reader found the stolen car reported here last Friday. Mel reported her cousin’s green 2000 Honda CR-V was taken from the Westwood Village parking lot at 25th/Barton; today JH called police to report spotting it less than two miles away at 17th/Myrtle, and then e-mailed us with the news, adding that it’s not the first stolen car dumped there.

Mel confirms police have since contacted her cousin, who has the car back, “few damages” but some things stolen including “random CDs” and her daughter’s booster seat, but not her son’s car-seat base. Plus: “My back seats were down so it looked like they needed to take something someplace and needed a big enough car for it.” She says big thanks to JH for finding it.

We’ve received multiple reports about suspected gunshots heard before 10 pm on Puget Ridge, possibly from a car heard/seen speeding southbound in the 6000 block of 16th SW and beyond. It’s been reported to police, who are investigating. We haven’t heard yet whether they’ve found any evidence of gunfire (casings, damage).

5:59 PM THURSDAY: You know Northwest Wine Academy at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) for its reds, its whites … and today, its blues and greens. The photo was taken while reps of Mayor Ed Murray‘s office were visiting NWWA this afternoon – there to pick up some choice NWWA wine for the mayor’s impending coast-to-coast bet with his counterpart in Charlotte, NC, over Sunday’s Seahawks-Panthers game.

Mayor Ed Murray has entered into a friendly wager with Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts ahead of Sunday’s NFC Divisional Playoff game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Carolina Panthers. Sunday’s game marks the second consecutive year the two teams have met in the Divisional round, with the Seahawks winning last year 31-17.

“I’m looking forward to celebrating another Seahawk playoff win with another package of prizes from yet another Mayor of Charlotte,” said Mayor Murray. “We have never lost to the Panthers in the playoffs and I know Coach Carroll has the team ready for this road playoff game. Last week’s game is proof that the Seahawks can beat any opponent, in any weather, in any stadium.”

“As much as I’d love to share our fine southern cuisine with our cross-country colleagues, they will have to settle for eating crow after we beat the ‘Hawks’,” said Mayor Roberts. “Coach Rivera has the team prepared to defeat anyone standing in their path to the Super Bowl. Pete Carroll will be sleepless in Charlotte trying to develop a game plan to stop Cam Newton.”

If the Seahawks beat the Panthers, Mayor Roberts will send Mayor Murray barbeque from Mac’s Speed Shop, beer from The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, and salted caramel brownies from Amelie’s French Bakery.

If the Panthers defeat the Seahawks, Mayor Murray will send Mayor Roberts beer from Pike Brewing, wine from the South Seattle College’s Northwest Wine Academy, and Chinese barbeque from Kau Kau in the Chinatown-International District.

Sunday’s game kicks off at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte at 10:05 a.m. Pacific time.

UPDATE: Police investigating gunfire that hit a car on Puget Ridge

3:07 PM: On 18th SW in Puget Ridge, north of Myrtle, police are investigating gunfire that hit a car. No one in that car (or elsewhere) is hurt, but it clearly has a bullet hole; its driver veered off the road after the bullet hit. Police are still in the area looking for shell casings and suspect(s) and talking to witnesses. More as we get it.

3:11 PM: According to scanner traffic, at least two casings have been found in the 7000 block of 18th. (The car that was hit is the Volvo in our photo.)

3:41 PM: Following up on discussion in the comments, we confirmed that Sanislo Elementary, near the scene, sheltered in place briefly, but that’s been lifted, and they are dismissing “normally,” per principal Bruce Rhodes, with whom our photographer spoke at the school.

3:52 PM: We just checked with SPD and there’s no further information available yet about circumstances, suspect, etc.

3:55 PM: Update on that: it’s now described as believed to be related to a “domestic dispute.” No arrest so far.

Seattle Fire crews are still keeping “fire watch” at the scene of last night’s house fire in the 5200 block of 18th SW on Puget Ridge (WSB coverage here). And SFD spokesperson Lt. Sue Stangl has just sent word of what investigators determined: The fire was accidental.

She adds that damage is estimated at “$250,000 loss to structure and $50,000 to contents. A lamp tipped over and ignited some clothing. There was a delay in calling the fire department as the resident tried to extinguish the fire twice.” As SFD reminds in this post on the SFD Fire Line site, please don’t ever wait to call for help:

… A resident used two fire extinguishers to fight the visible flames. When the fire appeared to be extinguished, he left the room. A short time later he returned to find a fully involved room fire. He and his roommates attempted again to put water on the fire but it grew too fast. Once they realized that they couldn’t conquer the rapidly growing fire, they called 9-1-1 and exited the building. Having a fire extinguisher in an accessible location can help keep your home fire safe. The most important step is to immediately call 9-1-1 at the first sign of a fire. Once you know that help is on the way, you can then decide if the fire is small enough to utilize your fire extinguisher. …

UPDATE: 2-alarm house fire on Puget Ridge; 6 people and 1 cat all get out safely, no injuries

7:05 PM: Seattle Fire is at the scene of a reported house fire in the 5200 block of 18th SW [map] on Puget Ridge. They’ve just called for two more engines and are reporting the fire is visible through the roof of one side of the house.

7:11 PM: Via scanner, it’s being described as a heavily involved attic fire.

7:14 PM: Also via scanner, they’re pulling crews out of the house and declaring it a “defensive fire,” apparently because of danger from a power line – they won’t go back inside until power is shut off.

7:21 PM: Neighbors tell our crew at the scene that people were home when this started but made it out OK. Flames are still visible.

7:29 PM: Firefighters have gone back into “offensive” mode and report the fire’s “knocked down.” No word of injuries so far. SFD is calling for the Red Cross to come offer help to the residents.

7:46 PM: SFD spokesperson Lt. Sue Stangl has just briefed media. She says six people were home and all did indeed get out OK, as did their cat (photo above; rescuer was SFD Lt. Kym LeRoy). She said the fire was in the garage, living room, and attic when firefighters arrived, and discussed the electrical-line problems we mentioned earlier. She also confirms, no injuries. We’ll add video of her briefing once we upload it.

8:06 PM: SFD says all six of the people who were displaced are adults. The cause of the fire isn’t known yet – investigators are on scene.

8:53 PM: We’ve added the video of Lt. Stangl’s briefing. She also says via Twitter that “one elderly woman … was carried out of the house by a neighbor.”

11:55 PM: Police are searching in and around the 5400 block of 17th SW after a report of a possible in-progress burglary. We’re hearing that the Guardian One helicopter is either in the area or on the way – so if you hear a helicopter, this is what it’s about.

12:24 AM: No word of how this resolved; we’ll check later this morning.

West Seattle back-to-school: Fall quarter’s first day at South Seattle College

This just might be the final “back-to-school” day of the year in West Seattle. It’s the first day of fall quarter at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor), headquartered at 6000 16th SW on Puget Ridge. SSC spokesperson Kevin Maloney tells WSB that more than 5,000 students are enrolled, including 103 13th-Year Promise Scholars, and that students “were greeted this morning with breakfast bars, coffee, and a warm welcome by staff members scattered throughout campus.” Those staffers include Computer Science instructor Ravi Gandham:

The fall quarter, which includes 55 instructional days, ends on December 16th; winter quarter starts January 4th.

P.S. A “Welcome Fair” is scheduled for noon-2 pm Thursday by the Clock Tower (which is shown in the top photo).

11:33 AM: That ’57 BMW Isetta is one of the more unusual cars you’ll see today at the eighth annual West Seattle Car Show, rebooted to a brand-new location in the north lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor). The cars span the decades – going back even further, here’s a 1947 Buick Super 8 convertible:

Trophies will be announced and awarded at 3 pm – and if you come to the show by 2:30 pm, you can vote on the People’s Choice award:

Along with the cars, you’ll see trucks, bicycles, and this mini-hydroplane showing off a 1959 Mercury Mark motor:

The West Seattle-based Nibbles food truck is here with its “Southwest fusion” flavors:

(So far, the mini-donut truck is a no-show.) You’ll find beverages inside the Northwest Wine Academy – including some of their award-winning wines:

While the fog and clouds are starting to lift, it’s also a great day for hot beverages, and you’ll find coffee there too. Again this year, Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks (both WSB sponsors) organized the show. Come say hi – our booth is next to their table on the east side of the show, where you can buy a raffle ticket that will benefit the SSC Automotive Tech program as do proceeds from the registration fees. A DJ’s playing hits old and new, and the clouds are starting to lift – we see the sun starting to break through to the south. More to come!

SUNDAY: West Seattle Car Show’s debut at its new community-suggested home

One more reminder before we get to the weekend: It’s time for the eighth annual West Seattle Car Show this Sunday – but don’t look for it in the usual place; it has a brand-new home, on the campus of South Seattle College (WSB sponsor). When it was announced earlier this year that The Junction was no longer available, car-show fans weren’t willing to take “no show” for an answer, and some suggested SSC. Turned out to be a perfect fit because of not only room to roam but also, the campus is home to a well-regarded Automotive Technology program (which is the beneficiary from proceeds of the show, organized again this year by Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks [both also WSB sponsors]). You’ll be able to tour the program’s home on the north end of the campus during show hours 10 am-3 pm on Sunday, along with another one of SSC’s gems, the Northwest Wine Academy. Wine and beer also will be available for purchase, as will food from local trucks Nibbles and Mini The Dough-Nut. As for the cars (and motorcycles), you can still register on show day – load-in starts at 8 am, and the application is downloadable from the official West Seattle Car Show website. FOLLOWUP: Specially trained K9 helps police find guns in Puget Ridge case; suspect remains in juvenile detention

3:31 PM: New information today on the arrest we reported Tuesday in connection with two Puget Ridge domestic-violence assaults, including the one that brought the Guardian One helicopter to the area on Friday. Just published online by SPD’s Jonah Spangenthal-Lee:

A specially trained ATF K9 helped officers track down three pistols hidden by a 17-year-old suspect after he attacked his girlfriend Tuesday afternoon in West Seattle.

The victim, who is also a juvenile, called police around 1:50 PM and said her boyfriend had just choked her into unconsciousness at her home and fled. She also told a 911 dispatcher the suspect had left the house carrying three handguns. Earlier in the week, he had threatened to shoot the victim and, on Tuesday, had reportedly pointed a gun at her as he fled through a wooded area near her home.

Medics treated the victim at her home as police began searching for the suspect. Officers found the 17-year-old near 18th SW and SW Juneau St and took him into custody. Police discovered he was no longer carrying the handguns, and began searching the neighborhood to try to find where he’d stashed them.

Officers were able to call in the assistance of an ATF K9, Allegra, trained to search for guns and shell casings. The dog tracked down the suspect’s three guns in a wooded area. One of the guns had been reported stolen.

Police booked the suspect into the Youth Service Center for investigation of felony domestic violence.

Previously, we had reported the recovery of one gun. Meantime, we’ve been following up on the suspect’s status via the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office; he was due in court this afternoon for a detention review and probable-cause hearing. We’ll update this story when we get the results of that hearing.

4:09 PM: We’ve just received that information. The KCPAO says a judge found probable cause in the case and ordered that the suspect remain in detention; prosecutors have until Friday to file charges. The probable-cause document says the suspect had returned to his 17-year-old girlfriend’s house yesterday to get his belongings when they started to argue; she told police later that she was trying to call 911 when he slapped the phone out of her hand and choked her until she lost consciousness.

Two West Seattle Crime Watch cases to report:

PUGET RIDGE ARREST: Thanks to the texter who sent the photo of police in the 18th/Juneau vicinity this afternoon. That’s where they arrested a suspect in what was described as a felony domestic-violence assault; it appears to be the same suspect sought in a similar case last Friday (WSB coverage here). We will be following up with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office tomorrow. After arresting the suspect, police were searching for a gun he might have cast aside; they subsequently reported finding a gun along a staircase in the area. The victim was checked out by SFD medics.

NORTH ADMIRAL CAR PROWL: This is a reader report from James:

This happened on the corner of Atlantic Street and California in the North Admiral District at the Park Hamilton apartments. Between the hours of 12:30 a.m. and 6 a.m. on August 25th. my car had both passenger side windows blown out and a laptop and iPod was stolen. Neither were clearly visible and the car was parked in a parking space and not on the street. Estimated damage including theft was around $2,200.

Unfortunately, parking lots and garages are no more immune to car prowlers than the street – while we haven’t received a reader report, and it’s not on the official log yet, we also heard a dispatch very early this morning for a car break-in inside a parking garage at one of the Junction’s newer buildings.

UPDATE: Police/helicopter search on Puget Ridge

9:46 AM: Thanks for the tips that Guardian One is up over Puget Ridge, with police on the ground near 18th and Dawson. SPD media relations tells us they’re looking for an assault suspect in a suspected case of domestic violence.

10:02 AM: Our crew reports the helicopter is still up and while there’s a significant police presence in the area, including K-9, Dawson (which takes a much-used turn through that area, between Puget Ridge and North Delridge) remains open.

10:48 AM: Guardian One has moved on, but no arrest is reported yet.

11 AM: Commenters have been asking about whether the closest schools that have Kindergarten Jump Start this week – Pathfinder, Sanislo, and Arbor Heights at Boren are each about 1 mile away – were in lockdown or shelter-in-place; some say they received notice that Pathfinder was, but Seattle Public Schools spokesperson Stacy Howard tells WSB, “We’ve just told them to lock their front doors. No shelter-in-place.”

Just out of the WSB inbox:

South Seattle College’s West Seattle Campus will close today, August 11, at 4 p.m. due to a power outage. All classes for this evening have been cancelled.

The Georgetown and New Holly South Seattle College campuses, however, will remainopen on their regular schedule.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. today, a transformer blew on the West Seattle campus’ north parking lot causing a brief power outage. A loud “boom” that was caused by the transformer was heard at the north end of the parking lot. No injuries were reported.

To fix the transformer, Seattle City Light will need tp shut down all power on the West Seattle Campus to make the necessary repairs. Regularly scheduled hours for the West Seattle Campus are expected to resume tomorrow, August 12.

The garden’s at the north end of South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor). Admission is free for everyone up to age 17; $3 donation suggested for adults. The festival continues with demonstrations, entertainment, and more, as well as kite-flying (buy one if you don’t have one to bring!), until 6 pm.

The Blue Angels and other Seafair Air Show participants won’t be alone in the sky this Saturday – as you might already have seen in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, it’s also the third annual Kite Festival at the Seattle Chinese Garden on Puget Ridge. More than 500 people visited the garden on the north end of the South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) campus for last year’s festival; it’s happening 2-6 pm Saturday (plenty of time to arrive AFTER the Blue Angels’ 1:40 pm-ish show if that’s already in your plans). Bring your own kite OR buy one at the festival; enjoy kite-flying demos, kite-painting for kids, courtyard entertainment, and refreshments. 17 and under get in free; $3 suggested donation for adults.
