That’s Pat Wright of the Total Experience Gospel Choir on stage tonight at West Seattle’s Kenyon Hall, accompanied by KH proprietor Lou Magor in an impromptu-by-audience-request performance of “Amazing Grace.” This was the first of four amazing nights of Wright and her choir visiting KH somewhat as artists-in-residence, as they get ready for a major journey:
Helping Hurricane Katrina survivors in Mississippi is a special cause for Wright and her choir, and that’s where they’re heading in a few days. During their Kenyon Hall appearances nightly through Wednesday, they’re collecting donations for Katrina relief, performing, and also talking — tomorrow night Wright continues an onstage interview with Seattle Times columnist Nicole Brodeur, who went along on one of the post-Katrina trips. Wright brimmed with emotion tonight about what they’ve seen:
Along with the interview continuation, Wright and her choir are scheduled to sing again tomorrow night; Tuesday night, they will be joined by Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron; and they’ll wrap up the four-night Kenyon Hall visit on Wednesday. You never know quite what will happen – here’s another spontaneous musical moment from tonight (Wright was asked about her favorite song; choir members joined in from the audience):
Admission is free (but as we mentioned, they’re accepting Katrina relief donations); it all starts at 7 pm each night (more info on the KH website). Kenyon Hall is one of West Seattle’s hidden treasures; you may have driven past it a zillion times – it’s in a big old house, set back from the east side of 35th next to the Westwood Florist commercial building, south of Kenyon (map).
