Reader report: Another 35th/Juneau car crash

35thjuneau.jpg

Thanks to LyndaB for the photo and for word of this crash that blocked the right northbound lane of 35th at Juneau for a while earlier tonight (a second car was involved too; SFD callout on the 911 log does not appear to have been too big). She told us about this one at the same intersection a month ago; clearly “I-35,” forthcoming red-light cameras and all, is worth watching even more closely in ’08.

Looks like this was a left turn from Juneau on to 35th..I know the light at Findlay takes a little longer, but I prefer taking my left turns there and it is only a block away..for this very reason. Sometimes when it is dark and rainy, hard to tell how far away the cars are.

This is another “benefit” of the SHA rebuild of Highpoint rather than the traffic on 35th.

SHA officials, Design review board and SDOT were all contacted about this issue long ago, but they declined to address the issue and promised that no traffic light would ever be approved for any intersection between Findley and Morgen.

The only avenues of escape from the Highpoint neighborhood are via Juneau, Raymond, Graham, and 34th/Sylvan way.

Only Juneau and Graham are wide enough for two cars to pass side by side. and both are hazardous during the extended rush hour traffic.

Seattle Housing Authority has had the old 32nd ave/ new Lanham Place intersection, as well as the old Highpoint drive/Sylvan way intersection closed for nearly 4 years.

This area now has nearly 2000 people in it, many of them drivers who seem to have cell phones permanently attached.

While I do not want to have to wait at yet another poorly timed traffic light on 35th, I am in disbelief that one was not put in somewhere near High Point due to the increased number of residents living there. Unfortunately it will take many more car accidents for SDOT to do something about this stretch of road and all of the cars going to and coming from High Point.

I have lived on 34th between Juneau and Findley for over 20 years. Neighbors and I have tried to get the light MOVED from Findlay to Juneau for years. Rumor has it it was put in because of the school down the hill and Findley was going be a through street. Well Findley does not go through. We have people speeding down our residential street to get to and from the light. Neighbors have lost many pet cats and there have been hit and runs through the years. I think the light should be moved to Juneau from Findley(save us some money) and a pedestrian crosswalk like the ones they have in White Center should be put in at Findley and 35th. I would think that would make everyone happy.

Sorry, comment time is over.
