West Seattle Weekend Lineup: Hunka hunka burnin’ fun

It’s not happening in West Seattle – but that’s a West Seattleite, Bret Wiggins, channeling Elvis again this year (the video’s from last year) in the Seattle Invitationals competition for Elvis stylists – happening tonight in SODO, on The King’s birthday (he would have been 75). 8 pm at Club Motor, 1950 First Avenue South. (Advance-ticket discount – go here.) Comedy as well as 20+ “Elvis artists.” Now, segueing to something sort of related to Elvis’s hometown …

That’s a 2008 YouTube clip of Memphis Radio Kings in Ballard — you can see them in West Seattle tomorrow night at Skylark Cafe and Club (WSB’s Weekend Lineup sponsor). Also tonight, tomorrow night AND two weekend matinees, it’s “Amahl and the Night Visitors” (COUPON! for 20% off adult admission) – Sunday there’s free yoga from SoundYoga (WSB sponsor) – tonight a luau at Redline Music and Sports; tomorrow, new Junction restaurant Table 35 opens. Note that Marination Mobile will NOT be in High Point tomorrow. And this weekend is your last chance to recycle your Christmas tree for free through the city. More than 40 events/activities in all:

Recycle Your Holiday Greens! Seattle residents who subscribe to curbside yard and food waste collection can put their trees and greens out on their regular collection day at no extra charge from Dec. 26, 2009 to Jan. 10, 2010. Trees should be cut into sections of six feet long or shorter, with branches trimmed to less than four feet to fit into the collection trucks. Sections should be bundled with string or twine.

Trees that are flocked and/or have tinsel or ornaments will be collected as extra garbage. Customers will need to cut the tree into three-foot pieces and each piece will be charged as extra garbage. Each unit of extra garbage costs $7.60. Plastic trees are not recyclable.

Seattle residents can also drop off their holiday trees and greens for free at Seattle Public Utilities’ North and South Recycling and Disposal stations between Dec. 26, 2009 and Jan. 10, 2010. The North Recycling and Disposal Station is located at North 34th Street and Carr Place North. The South Recycling and Disposal Station is located at 2nd Avenue South and South Kenyon Street. The stations are open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

To be accepted at the transfer stations, tree sections must be cut to eight feet or less in length and the trunk must be four inches or smaller in diameter. The limit is three trees per vehicle. Only trees without flocking or decoration may be disposed of free of charge.

SATURDAY MORNING: Fruit tree expert to teach pruning class in West Seattle orchard. John Reardon,
vice president of the Seattle Tree Fruit Society, will teach a basic fruit tree and kiwi pruning class at his home orchard in the Delridge neighborhood on Saturday January 9, 10 am to noon. This is a rare chance to learn pruning techniques on well-maintained fruit trees and (fuzzless) kiwi vines. John is a passionate lay fruit grower who has taught classes for Plant Amnesty, Seattle Tree Fruit Society and City Fruit. He notes: “I enjoy pruning and training my plants! My goals are to encourage easy picking and to create productive plants. I encourage lots of questions and believe in learning by doing.” Cost is $15 for City Fruit members and $20 general. Register at Brown Paper Tickets or send a check to City Fruit, PO Box 28577, Seattle 98118. City Fruit is an organization that helps urban neighborhoods grow and harvest fruit. In 2009 West Seattle residents donated more than 6,600 pounds of fruit to food banks and meals programs. Healthy trees will produce more—and better—fruit, and pruning a tree is one way to maintain its health and vigor. City Fruit is sponsoring the class; the Phinney Neighborhood Association is a co-sponsor.

Come be a part of our goal of restoring part of Seattle’s 2500 acres of forested park land. Most of the trees in Seattle are near the end of their natural lifespan and invasive plants have choked out the seedlings that would replace the native trees. Come help us remove invasive plants and then put down a layer of mulch to prepare for planting the next generation of native trees and plants in January/February 2010.
The Delridge Natural Area is a beautiful site with the Longfellow Creek meandering through it. Two beaver ponds have developed as well, creating habitat for many different kinds of wildlife. Be sure to wear long pants, a long sleeve shirt and heavy shoes and if you have work gloves bring them as well. I have a supply of gloves as well. Also, bring water and a snack. If you have any questions, please contact me. RSVP is appreciated.
