West Seattle Crime Watch: Gatewood break-in

A Gatewood resident who wants to be anonymous is sharing news of a crime on her block:

A neighbor just came by our house to alert us to the break in at a neighbor’s home, on SW Rose St, between 35th & 37th Ave SW [map], around 10 am today. Apparently the burglars broke in through the back door and stole numerous valuables — inlcuding a digital camera, jar of coins and other items.

I don’t have any other details, but thought I should alert others of this incident.

By the way, though tomorrow’s the third Tuesday, the West Seattle Crime Prevention Council is NOT meeting – it’ll resume regular meetings in January.

Another break-in note, Super 24 was burglarized the same evening they had their open house. That is not Healthy!

Can the WSB prepare a map & have dots of all the robberies, break-in’s, etc..to see where these are all taking place on 1 map if West Seattle? Crime sucks!

Sorry to hear this — so good to know though as a neighbor 2 blocks away. It seems the Grinch’s are out pilfering trying to ruin Christmas. We will keep our eyes peeled in Gatewood for THIEVES!

We had break-in as well on SW Kenyon St between 35th and 37th this month. Same method of entry.

Reading these crime/break-in posts always makes me feel like I should never leave the house!

What does SPD suggest to avoid being burgaled? Especially these daytime door smash types of break-ins?

Our home near the Alaska/California junction was broken into in October this year. Our neighbor, who is a police office, recommended that we add locks to all of our windows and sticks to the window tracks. They would much rather not break any glass to get in.

We were broken into earlier this year. We had just moved to WS and bought a house. Walked in on him. I was only out of my house for 45 minutes and came home to a very scary unwelcome guy tearing my home apart. I now have a serious alarm system with signs and stickers on windows. Also a no soliting sign. I strongly advise locks on windows and sticks (in every window including the small basement ones) also. We went a step further and have metal brackets (home depot) on every window so you can only open the window so far before you jam into one. These are in addition to the motion sensors we now have on every window and door. Even if we leave the house for 10 minutes we set the alarm. It is sad but a reality that an alarm and everything els is a really good idea.
Take a walk ( daytime and night ) around your neighborhood and think like a burglar. It will change how you see your home and your neighbors homes. Make your place hard to get into and unappealing to the cruising creeps. You will be glad you did. They will just move on to an easier target…Take it from me I wish I had secured my home sooner than I did. The most basic things like sticks and metal brackets are really inexpensive and are at Home Depot. Also set up a block watch. I did and we got a great response.
I was amazed once we reached out to our neighbors how happy people were to meet each other and get together. Remember this time of year is when the creeps will be out looking to take presents!

On Dec 11, we, too, had a break-in. They hit our Gatewood Rd house at about 1:00 in the afternoon. They broke in through the front door, destroying it with a crowbar or the like. By the type of items stolen, it appears he was on foot. It happened within a 2 hour period and it’s likely he saw us leave the house. A man was walking up our street near our driveway as we drove out (unusual as it’s not a highly traveled street). If it was this guy, he was a 40+ tattered looking black guy in a puffy coat. If it wasn’t him, sorry for falsely assuming it was you, sir.

Sorry, comment time is over.
