Ceremony set for celebration of West Seattle Bridge’s added name

williams1.jpgFrom City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen‘s office: A date is set for the ceremony to officially add a name to the West Seattle Bridge – not replacing that utilitarian name — in honor of former Councilmember Jeanette Williams, who helped secure the federal funding that made The Bridge possible. It’s been almost three months since the council passed the resolution. The ceremony is planned for 12:30 pm October 23rd, at a still-to-be-finalized location under The Bridge – that’ll be almost a year to the day since Ms. Williams’ death last October.

A bridge by any other name is still a bridge — not a freeway.

Funny thing about that freeway bit – SDOT called it the West Seattle Freeway in one of their tweets yesterday about the truck spill at 4th Ave So.

I meant to send their media folks a note on that.

I’ll have to try to make this event. Not only in honor of Jeanette, but to reminisce about being there for the high-rise bridge dedication, back in 1980.

And a moment to remember Captain Rolf.

Metro had it as the WS Freeway on their bus schedules a year or two ago – I emailed them and they changed it. Google maps calls it a freeway also. And folks drive across it like it IS a freeway. Folks it’s 45mph…and down on the Spokane St viaduct it’s 35…for those who don’t remember the couple of horrific crashes that took lives, there’s a reason those are the posted speeds.

Has anyone else noticed if you look at the bridge from North or South, it has nearly the same arch as Janette’s hair in this picture? No better tribute to a woman that did a ton of good for West Seattle.

Sorry, comment time is over.
