10 days till West Seattle’s new Shipwreck Tavern plans to open

Well, 4210 SW Admiral Way looks like a wreck. Of course, that’s part of the plan.

A freshly painted sign on the building’s façade – just completed by a familiar face in West Seattle, artist Glenn Case – indicates that the Shipwreck Tavern (map) will soon be open. According to owner Chris Long, that day will be Saturday, October 10.

Long is happy to talk about his new venture, which he will run along with his wife, Jennifer Ferrero. Actually, he’s happy to shout about it – a state-of-the-art PA system isn’t complete, but a jukebox on the wall is blaring AC/DC at deafening levels, competing with the din of hammers and saws.

Given the new tavern’s name, it’s no surprise when Long says, “It’s going to be somewhat of a nautical theme,” though he points out, “but not ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’” Inside, the theme isn’t obvious just yet – the long bar is still crowded with construction tools and wires. Aside from the jukebox, walls are bare. The beer taps aren’t even in yet. But oh, they will be soon.

“We’ll have a dozen beers on tap,” Long says. “We’re going to try to go with a lot of Northwest beers, but also going to diverge from what everyone else is doing.”

Despite a background as a chef – Long was the general manager and chef at the Alki Homestead before the January fire closed it down – food won’t be served. The Shipwreck Tavern will operate similarly to Beveridge Place Pub in that menus from nearby restaurants will be available and guests will be welcome to bring food in.

The final selection of beers is still being decided. “That’s tough,” Long says, sounding almost reverent. “I love so much beer. I love Northwest beer. It’s probably the best in the whole country.”

But the biggest draw, he says, will be the music. “We plan to run the gamut of most genres, from rock to jazz,” he says. Opening night, he’s hoping to bring in the Betty Ford Falcons and Colby Imus & the Good Lieutenants – both acts are still to be confirmed.

“Hopefully in the future we’re going to have karaoke and open mic night,” he says.

Of course, the future Shipwreck Tavern almost didn’t exist at all – 4210 SW Admiral is part of a block that was slated for demolition after its last tenant, TNT’s Place, closed. For obvious reasons, Long is happy the demolition never took place. But he’s more pleased to be able to carry on the venue’s musical tradition.

“So many people love this building,” he muses. “It’s amazing the history behind it. It’s been a tavern for so many years. It was called the Happy Hour.”

The Shipwreck’s front door has often been propped open during renovation, and locals have stopped in to chat about the building, Long says. “I’ve had so many 60- and 70-year-olds come by and talk about the musical acts that used to be here. One man told me how he leaned in the doorway – he was about 17 at the time – “watching Astrid Gilberto play.”

West 5 bartender and waitress Jo-Ann Clutcher, herself a local institution, confirms those memories – after all, she worked at the legendary Admiral Benbow Inn for 35 years, right next door. She recalls that musicians “like Brubeck’s band” played the Happy Hour in the early 1950s.

Is Long worried about starting a new business while the economy is still struggling to recover? “Not really,” he says. “I think this community helps itself out a lot.”

His mother Deborah Lee, in town from Orange County to help with painting and construction, can’t help but weigh in on this opinion. “People here are so encouraging!” she agrees. “Everyone is so friendly.” West Seattle’s sense of community spirit, she says, is a far cry from where she lives.

Long is helping people, too – he plans to hire three of his former Alki Homestead coworkers.

The Shipwreck Tavern’s regular hours will likely begin at 3 p.m., with Sundays open a bit earlier for football games. Long is working on making arrangements with local businesses to allow after-hours parking in the lots of nearby banks and in the underground garage at Bartell Drugs.

Mostly, Long is looking forward to the Shipwreck Tavern being home to “live music and lots of friends.” Stay tuned.

I for one look forward to getting shipwrecked on a regular basis (and I can walk/crawl/stumble home so that makes it better).

Now keep all the druggie’s and low lifes out of there and you should be sucessful…a problem that TNT’S had in the past!!

  • WSEvelyn September 30, 2009 (6:59 pm)

I think that Neysa (the past owner) of the ‘Benbow” would be pleased to know that the Benbow Inn lives on. If it does half as well, West Seattle is in for a treat!

  • OP September 30, 2009 (7:25 pm)

West Seattlites are going to need a collective liver transplant given all the watering holes that have opened around here in the past 2 years! lol

  • Renee September 30, 2009 (7:34 pm)

    YAAAAY!!!

  • Mark C. September 30, 2009 (9:28 pm)

  • Jason September 30, 2009 (10:45 pm)

The more bars with northwest beers the better! Live music- even better! (Get a good IPA and I’m there)

  • Mark September 30, 2009 (11:12 pm)

Nice article Mary. Now I finally understand the construction I saw there a month or so ago. Thank you.

  • KR October 1, 2009 (9:24 am)

Can’t wait to check it out!

  • Seadanes October 1, 2009 (9:34 am)

Does anybody know if, like BPP, this will be a pup-friendly spot?

  • Bender October 1, 2009 (9:51 am)

Not everyone likes dogs. Keep it at home.

Why another bar? We need more family restaurants…poor quality eatery’s in West Seattle should take precedent over another watering hole. Doesn’t the Admiral District already have a problem with Yen Wor and Admiral Pub? I remember when this area was clean, and family oriented, now its 5 bars within a 1 block radius.

  • Keith October 1, 2009 (10:59 am)

    Sounds awesome!

  • holly October 1, 2009 (11:14 am)

Does anyone know if they saved the ship from the old Benbow?

  • austin October 1, 2009 (11:27 am)

Looking forward to a pint as long as the place isn’t full of codependent dogowners..

  • Tracy D. October 1, 2009 (12:13 pm)

Congrats Chris & Jenn (my birthday twin)…so excited for you! Can’t wait to come check it out and see all the familiar faces. All my best to you both!

  • MaryT October 1, 2009 (12:35 pm)

I love dogs, but I don’t think my dogs would like loud live music. We didn’t discuss that, but my guess would be a “no.”

” remember when this area was clean, and family oriented, now its 5 bars within a 1 block radius.”

    I remember the Jigsaw Tavern.

  • Leroniusmonkfish October 1, 2009 (1:16 pm)

    Haha…someone said “family oriented”.

hahah @ KBear. Yeah, keep your babies out of my bar!

  • linda October 1, 2009 (2:26 pm)

Yeah on the rebirth of the Benbow, remember drinking beers with my dad in the ship. Too bad it’s not walking/stumbling/crawling distance.
But I gotta side with the no dogs folks on this one due to dog allergies: The only reason I can tolerate it at BPP is becuase it is a large enough space that the dander and fur don’t get concentrated in the air, not true of the Benbow. Open to dogs, closed to me since I enjoy being able to breathe. ;)

  • Kara October 1, 2009 (2:40 pm)

I’m already crying…I remember going to the Benbow as a child with my parents and after with my dad when my parents divorced. I was constantly going to the ‘bathroom’ just so I could see ‘the ship’ and couldn’t wait till I was old enough to go in there! Sadly, it closed before I got my chance. I’m curious if ‘the ship’ will still be present? Cause if it is my dad and I will definitely be stopping in.

  • Keith October 1, 2009 (3:03 pm)

Shipwreck Tavern isn’t going into the old Benbow space – it’s going where the TNT Tavern was, next door.

I’d heard that the Benbow ship and water feature had been torn out back when that space briefly became a BBQ joint. Bummer.

  • dwar October 1, 2009 (3:28 pm)

Keith is right. This is not the BENBOW, but is the former TNT Tavern.

  • JenV October 1, 2009 (3:43 pm)

God I danced a dance of joy when that Caribbean/BBQ place went under after what they did to the Benbow. I almost cried when we went in there and saw the ship was gone, and everything was painted stark black and white. We never went back.
For the record, TNT’s was a cool joint – they had a decent jukebox.

  • dawsonct October 2, 2009 (9:48 am)

Oh man, I remember going through that door many times! Oddly, I don’t recall exiting, but I obviously did.
Thanks for taking the plunge; looking forward to helping out with the keg-draining phase.

Love the idea of a new place to see live music in the ‘hood. Love that they will have NW beers on tap (hopefully something more interesting than Mac n Jack). Love the Bev Place format. I’m already picturing bringing in some Brickyard BBQ or sandwiches from the Met.

Request: how bout some music in the early evening, like a 6 o’clock Sunday blues show, for us “oldster” 40-ish neighbors who can’t stay awake for shows that start at 10 p.m.?

  • dawsonct October 2, 2009 (10:52 am)

I 2nd the “no” on M&J. They have enough taps in this town; a disproportionate number considering it’s bland flavor. PLENTY of INTERESTING N.W. and American beers to choose.

  • Katy L October 2, 2009 (1:07 pm)

Another idea: How about all-ages music shows, like 4 p.m. on a Saturday or Sunday? Is that possible? We’ve got phenomenal talent in this town playing all-ages music–Caspar Babypants, The Not-Its, Recess Monkey, Johnny Bregar, Central Services Board of Education, to name a few. Imagine the success where Mom and Dad can enjoy a pint while Jr. and Sis sip juice and dance to their heart’s content, and everyone enjoys the tunes…this is done in many other cities around the country, but not ours.

  • WSB October 2, 2009 (1:16 pm)

A little bit later than the time frame you mention and older than the scope of the bands you mention, but do note that Skylark has all-ages Sunday nights (starting at 7), and Full Tilt Ice Cream has an eclectic music mix too (the Not-Its have been there a time or two) … TR

  • Katy L October 2, 2009 (2:49 pm)

Yes, hats off to Full Tilt and Skylark. I’m thinking about parents who want to go out with the littler kiddos AND enjoy a beer with great music. I think there’s a real market for this.

  • farron October 11, 2009 (3:37 pm)

  • glocson October 13, 2009 (10:43 am)
