Happening now: Farm stand @ Market Garden in High Point

Just back from the Seattle Market Gardens farm stand at 32nd/Juneau in High Point, open till 7 pm (and every Tuesday 4:30-7 pm through Oct. 6). Brought home peas-in-pod for $3/pound, also noticed carrots, baby bok choy, onions, potatoes, lettuce, salad greens and beautiful flowers including fiery crocosmia. Everything harvested this morning, we were told; the growers were a bit shy but we did manage to snag this photo:

Looking east from the southwest end, over the actual garden (mini-farm), the stand is under the white tent:

Here’s a map to 32nd/Juneau. This is one of two Seattle Market Gardens, both in Seattle Housing Authority communities, and their farm stands are new this year – read more here. (They also offer weekly subscriptions.)

Well that answers a question I had – does bok choy grow in our area and apparently it does!

The farmers at High Point are terrific. Everything is organically grown, which is how they grew things in their native countries (in Southeast Asia) before coming here. We’ve been subscribers since 1999 and have always been happy with the quality, for a very minimal cost. They get to earn a living doing what they do best, and we get to eat beautiful, locally grown veggies. Everybody wins. My thanks to the city for this great program.

Ooh! I’m so excited. We walk by the Highpoint Garden all the time. We’re not subscribers because there is too much overlap with our own garden, but this will be a great way for us to enjoy their produce.

Did you see any tomato’s? My early girls are producing but they are a long way from ripe…

I guess I should walk down the block and look but it is always embarrassing to see the difference between the pros and my poor efforts.

I don’t recall tomatoes. Aside from what you see in the top photo, the main items that were not shown were mixed salad greens, romaine lettuce and a big bucket of mixed flowers. Maybe next week!

I was there last evening and bought carrots, onions and mixed salad greens. What a plus for the neighborhood — fresh, organically grown veggies and beautiful flowers at a very reasonable price. I hope West Seattle will support the farm stand; I know I’ll be back next Tuesday. A big thank you to the growers and to WSB for publicizing the farm stand.

I picked up pea pods (2 kinds!) and a handful of mint. The romaine looked especially wonderful. There are definitely tomatoes in the market garden but they won’t ripen until later in the summer.

I was the FIRST customer. I bought carrots, potatoes, a fabulous bunch of mixed kale, some sugar snap peas, and some flowers specially cut for me since the bunches they had prepared were too large. I love it!!

Its absolutely fantastic to see LOCALLY produced veggies being sold. Not just local, but hyper-local. They were not shipped, flown or trucked long-distance to market. They may have even been walked over to the consumer. THAT is locally grown.

Sorry, comment time is over.
